Banville
You should probably post this in the Space Wolf Sub Forum but I'll give you a bit of advice. Firstly get your Space Wolf Codex and your Space Marine Codex. You need both because some of the SW wargear rules are to be found in Codex: Space Marines. Now, determine how many points of an army you want and pick up your SW Codex. Next find yourself a HQ unit you like the look of and add the wargear you'd like him to have. Fourthly get yourself 2 Troop choices and equip as you see fit. Fifthly just mix and match from the rest of the SW Codex until your points total is filled The Codexes (Codici?) are structured so that you buy a unit at a base points cost and then add the equipment that you purchase on to this. Bran Scalphunter
Welcome to the Fang (an early greeting I know), and as your friendly neighborhood Space Wolf, I'll help you out. First off, do you have both the current SW codex and SM codex? Second, do you have the FAQ/Erratas from the GW website? Now a basic layout of how our funky rules work. Space Wolves use a different Force Organization Chart (FOC) than other armies by having to take more HQ choices. For every 750pts of the army list, an HQ must be selected from the C:SW. These are mandatory and have to be taken in order to have a legal list. Units that are taken from C:SM are vehicles and all C:SM variants (unless described differently in C:SW {Leman Russ Exterminator and Space Wolf Venerable Dreadnought}). In addition, Attack Bikes are taken from C:SM. However, any unit taken from C:SM will not use C:SM rules, it will instead use the C:SW rules. Certain special rules in our Codex are older and have newer versions in the Big Rule Book (BRB), like Counter-Attack for example. As per the GW FAQ, we use the current Counter-Attack from the BRB. However, True Grit is not listed in the BRB, so it is used as in C:SW. Other rules, like No Matter the Odds, are now defunct and are ignored. If there's anything else you need, just head over to the SW forum and if you need rules help, check the links in my signature- they'll bring you to the GW and B&C SW FAQ's respectively. Legatus
At the time the Codex Space Wolves was released (many, many years ago) it was GW's custom that all Space Marine Chapters would be based off of Codex Space Marines, but the more divergent Chapters like Blood Angels, Dark Angels and Space Wolves got "Update Codices", books which basically explained in what way those Chapters would be different from a Codex Space Marines army. The Codex Space Wolves tells you what units and vehicles you can chose for your Space Wolves army, and often they are very different from the units a regular Chapter would use, so the Codex Space Wolves has all the unit information like points costs, game stats and upgrade options. Some vehicles and items are the same that other Chapters use, though, and those can be found in Codex Space Marines, so the Codex Space Wolves does not describe them and only refers to Codex Space Marines, since all the standard stuff is described in there. Since the Codex Space Wolves has been released, there have been two new versions of the Codex Space Marines, so you may be confused that some point costs in your Codex Space Wolves (like for Predator tanks) or some Item Descriptions (like Storm Shields with a 4+ invulnerable save in the summary) do not match the current Codex Space Marines. There have been two new basic rule systems since then as well, and though the Codex is still compatible, some rules in the Codex do refer to outdated game mechanics. The Space Wolves FaQ has some information on some of the rules and unit descriptions that are outdated. The current Codex Space Wolves is quite old, and though you might still want to get it to start playing or for reference, it is rumoured that a new Codex Space Wolves will be released in October or so. That Codex will stand on it's own, and will not rely on Codex Space Marines. It will probably have a lot more background information as well. Legatus
Units that are described in the Codex Space Wolves in detail are bought from and use the rules described in the Codex Space Wolves. Units that are not listed as being available in Codex Space Wolves cannot be taken in a Space Wolves army. i.e. Space Wolves armies cannot include Chapter Masters or Sternguard Veterans from Codex Space Marines. But they use Land Speeders, Attack Bikes and Predators from Codex Space Marines. All Space Wolve Specific units have their own point costs in the Codex Space Wolves. Ok... so is the unit you want to pick detailed in the Space Wolf codex? If yes: use all the point values and stats in the unit entry as normal. If not: look in Codex Space marine, use the stats shown there. Are you trying to buy a dedicated transport? If so- go to the transport section of codex space marine. Are you trying to buy a vehicle other than a venerable dreadnaught or a leman russ exterminator? if so- go to codex space marine. Are you trying to buy a venerable dreadnaught or leman russ exterminator- if so go to codex space wolf and use all the point values shown there, and in the vehicle section of the armory. Are you looking for the stats of a weapon other than a frostblade? If so look in codex space marine. Are you looking for the rules for wargear not outlined on page 14 of the codex? if so, then follow the instructions at the top of the page and look in C:SM.
