Bringing Abaddon up to date

So, I've been working with a lot of sad, painted and stripped minis yet, but this was the worst; my old (as in so old I think he's got lead rather than the newer metal) Abaddon. Similar to my Ezekiel, I decided to customise him when I was like 12, and it sucked. Fortunately, this left his arms and other bits untouched for later use, but my got the body had suffered... I think I took a soldering iron to the torso for "battle damage" or something. Anyway, after a rant by a cranky older gamer at my local GW about Abaddon's model, I decided to give him some love. After all, his model used to be one of the biggest Terminator bodies around... Unfortunately he's now been left low by the new, larger plastic models, so I took it upon myself to make the model a bit more dynamic, as well as making it a little taller. The head's modified from a Flagellant head with angry eyebrows and some of the deformities fixed with putty, the torso's been entirely rebuilt with putty, including a putty-cast and then modified chestplate. I'm pretty pleased with how this is looking so far, actually. The sad thing is, I love the original head, but as people keep complaining, it's too small for the body, doubly so now I've made it bigger... Similarly, there was no way I felt I could top the original sword and claw, so I'm just using them as-is, modified to fit the new body.

All the basic work's done, now it's just adding cables and detail, and finishing off the back of his Terminator armour and joining the loincloth (which is sculpted but not pictured). I also want to work some small chains in somehow, just not sure how yet...

I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. The only area for concern is the rough putty areas, but I'm sure you'll get those taken care of. I do love his pose though. It's epic!

Thanks! Yeah, there's a lot of cleanup work to be done still. Brown Stuff also has the habit of looking "rough" compared to GS in photos, I'm noticing...

Can we get pictures from other angles?
2nd that motion. also have you any other works we can get a look at for comparison and a hint of what it could end like? it's looking good so far

I'll take some when I'm done with his back, I didn't realise how fiddly it was going to be until I tried... I did take a shot for size comparison with the "raw" model and an AoBR Terminator though;

As for my other works, I've got a few in this forum, this is the easiest one to find (as it's most recent);

Looking good so far.

It's always nice to see someone giving Abaddon a dynamic pose and doing his character justice.

Looking forward to seeing this guy finished.

Thanks! I'm kind of annoyed at how similar it looks to the stock pose, to be honest, but it's REALLY hard to do anything with his arms... I toyed with trying to have him pointing with the daemon sword, but it struck me as too fiddly.

Okie doke; added a bit of detail to the back, though it still needs some cutting, carving and general refinement. Also stuck the loincloth on with a metal pin just for an idea of how it should look. I'm planning on using real jeweller's chains for hanging some skulls. Also, the rock on the base has been made smaller and remodelled, so I can have a pile of Cadian heads or something in front.

Tempted to make his trophy racks more ostentatious, maybe with Ork bosspoles. Anyone have any ideas?

Nice Project and looking good so far.

But there is one mistake often done when scratchbuilding Terminators. The shoulder joints are to high.

Dont forget that there is human being (well a kind of) in that armor.

Anatomy is an important factor to make a mini look plausible.

Keep up the good work.

Yeah, you're right, thanks for the advice... I couldn't lower the shoulder joints, so I made his head a bit taller for the same effect. It means he looks bigger, but the armour looks smaller? It's not perfect, but I can't mod the arm position anymore. :/

I would advice getting a plastic terminator torso for him. The legs and arms and head look good but the torso just isn't up to par with them.

Yeah, those pics look awful at the back, don't they? Hopefully this is an improvement;

Unfortunately I sanded off the front of his torso detail. Argh.

So, the larger trophy racks might get shrunk slightly, but they're not much bigger than the originals as it is. Since all the skulls on the originals were a bit small (especially the 'nid one) I had to space out the larger ones slightly, there'll be a third smaller spike at the back. Unfortunately this means there's no room for a banner, however, it's just be too much. Once the banners are sorted, I just need to model the base and he's pretty much done!

I've learned 3 things so far;

1) Do TWO coats of Mr Surfacer when it's a metal mini.

2) I don't know how to paint black.

3) Badly sculpted/GS cast detail just looks like the paint's on too thick.

I was going for the kind of pallid pink skin he has in the CSM codex... The armour will probably get a black wash to blend in those blue highlights... Right now he looks a bit Night Lords-y. :/

Wow!

Just one question. Would you ad some photos in the size of the wip photos?

I think the small photos dont do this great conversion and paintjob justice.

Ah, they're clickable thumbnails. I just usually post the pics directly on B&C because they resize automatically here...

as far as the black paint goes. get some of the Badab Black wash and give it a good once over. It will clean it up without having to repaint all of it. Looks good so far....well, other than the black :). If nothing else send it to me and I'll paint it for ya and return it.

You know, I'd almost forgotten about this guy since I was so underwhelmed with how the black turned out, I just stuck him in a box until I get better at it. However, in the interests of full disclosure, here are some shots;

It's not the worst paintjob in the world, but it upsets me because I know I'm capable of much better, and it's not doing the conversion justice. The worst part is that I can't even strip it as that would destroy all the putty... I'll either rub bits down with Isopropyl Alcohol at some point, or revisit and clean up later on.
