Arming Raptors and Champ?

Brothers, I need your advice. I am building my first squad of Raptors. I am looking for help in kitting out the squad. What do you use and how has it performed for you in game? My Aspiring Champion is a plastic conversion. Should he be armed with a power weapon or power fist? Help this aged veteran of the Long War out. May you walk the Eightfold Path.

I would like them have a balance of anti-armor and infantry.

Not the best role for raptors, they wk better as specialists IMO. I guess if you want them anti-armor & anti-inf. I would give them 2 meltas and a PF champ and 8-10 guys.

Like Chillin mentioned, they arent really suited to fill both roles. I typically use either a small 5-man unit with 2 meltas for Anti-Tank or a 6-10 man unit with two flamers for anti-infantry. Even thought there are other units that can perform either role better, sometimes you just want some Raptors for the fun and fluff.

Yes you have a few choices which are regarded as being the 'best':

5 man with 2 Meltas

5 man with 2 Flamers

8 man with champ + fist (+ maybe 2 specials)

If you want both anti-infantry and antivehicle go with chillin his setup: so 8 man, fist champ and 2 meltas. Not too good against infantry though so be cautionous

The most effective unit of Raptors I've ever seen anyone run was as follows:

8 Raptors: Champ with Fist, 2 with meltaguns, Icon of Khorne.

They were also led by a Chaos Lord of Tzeentch who was armed with a Daemon weapon and had wings. The unit ran over just about everything it touched that entire weekend until the last game of the tournament when they charged a largely unscathed Crusader Squad of Black Templars. :teehee: Should give you an idea of their combat capabilities haha.

yes they are almost as good as zerkers , while not being scoring. they hit a WL or AVatar and you lose the lord and get boged down for the rest of the game . Any normal hth unit with an IC stops them too. thats the worse part of raptors , in the end they are a non scoring , not cheaper version of something we can get with our troops [i mean the hth version of raptor unit].

I was discussing raptors with my mate last night. My army is mainly a "get-in-there-quick-and-hack-em-to-pieces" style army, so I'll be fielding 8-10 raptors with flamers and fist champ as a mainly anti-inf squad against the more soft, fleshy targets (think IGs). Swoop in, do some damage then withdraw out of the way.

I've run a unit of 8 (2 meltas, Icon of Khorne, champ with powerfist) in a few games, and its very... meh. They usually make thier "points back" popping a tank, but that's about it. The basic problem is they are somewhat fragile; no transport, and they can't make as good use of cover in 5th edition as they did in 4th. Sure, you can assault anything you like, but without "hit and run" or the ability to consolidate into combat, your gonna get shot up even if you win. Sometimes they do OK by landing near cover and assaulting into it, and obviously they have some potential in Planet Strike games...

What I'm probably gonna do is make up a couple more of them with meltaguns, so I can have 2 units of 5 with melta. Problem is, all mine are based on berserker conversions (they were meant as possessed with flight and MoK from the 3.5 ed codex) so not giving them an Icon of Khoren is misleading.
