Ironclad dread WIP...

Let me start by saying I'm more of a hobby guy than than a power gamer but i do enjoy crunching on some bad guys.

Once (december-ish) I had read about the 'new' ironclad dread i thought it'd be a great addition to my army, i was even more excited to hear that this summer (erm... now) the model was going to be released... but the pic's I saw were distressing. I'd read around and found that I was not in the minority. My main disagreeances w/ the new model is the lame seige hammer and the lack of buffness I would have assumed GW would have incorporated in the model.

My inital plan of attack was for the hurricane bolter, 'simply' converting an old missile launcher arm with a bits h-bolter purchase... after about a handfull of modeling hours i came to the conclusion that it was WAY out of proportion. Plan 'b' was a scratch biult one... its nearing completeion and pic's are on the way...

Next was the torso, the GW looks cool by itself... someone pointed out it looked like a 'techmarine sarcougaphus', i agree with that a lot. but i don't think it looked AV13. i used green stuff to widen the body not quite 1/4 inch and used a some predator turret batteries for the frag launchers... pics to come...

and lastly the base, i have played tau for the last 'x' years and have plenty of experince reshaping them some why not have them volenteer for casualties! http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e330/Johnyskwkr/019.jpg

i'll get some more pics up after work tonight...

Sorry my camera doesn't take too great of pics up close...

this is how far i've come so far, the 2 tau FW's is for the Ironclad dread... the melted drone is for my V-dread w/ a plasma cannon. in both pic's you can see the legs, stepping up to crush the bone of the emperors enemies!

One of my functional ideas of my design is the frag launchers, angled toward the intended target not launching up into the air at nothing in particuar. With that I also incorporated the boat 'bow' for the front of the torso, to assist the direction of the outgoing fragments. To keep with the theme I made the 'shin guards' similar.

I like the faceted armor alot, its very knightly and gives a heavier look as well. The sharpness to the front has a cool agressive feel as well. I agree on the battery boxes. They look great for defensive grenade launchers. I would say you have an awesome start there.
I dont know how much farther you plan to go with the front armor, but I think it looks a little udefined. If you added some sort of detail, or decoration, I think it would look better.

...at the very least I will be adding rivit heads all the way around. naturally there will be honor badges and 'lion cloth' for the final product.

I thought about adding more... like a spare combat shield from the DA sprue... it gets to be busy and looked a little out of place. I am planning to keep it simple and after the rivits do the rest w/ paint. On the green side the chapter badge stands out nicely and for the other side i am still debating. If I were to add any texture I feel it would become too top heavy... not to mention I'm eager to stop modeling and start painting :P

Fair enough. All I was thinking of was possibly raised..... ingraving? Im thinking something like slender, decoritve designs, not too much just basic. Possibly a decorative bordder? But I will love it anyways, because I love dreadnoughts! And who doesnt love an extra cheesy AV13 A3 dread! Also I love DAs and DA successors.

....after a long time away, I have (re)started to make progress on my dread.

I framed the forward armor to give it a bit of depth/texture... (Cmdr Alex)

I added some grass (planning on some more once I get the feet planted on the base) and some bullet holes with some extra splatter... (War Angel)

Hopefully over the next few weeks I'll be able to make some good progress before I take another 'long pause'...
