Count Puppula
After reading Horus Rising and taking good looks at a lot of HH art i got confused. Are the Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus wearing mkII/Crusade Armour, mkIII/Iron Suit or mkIV? because the art suggests mkII or mkIII but the book mentions several times that they are wearing mkIV (atleast some of them) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/172526-confusement-about-armour/ Share on other sites
Chapter Master Gabriel
Most likely all three. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/172526-confusement-about-armour/#findComment-2038997 Share on other sites
ferrum proeliator
I think anything before MKVI is used by the Luna Wolves. I have seen a mixture of all the armour you mentioned used in artwork. I think it would be a safe bet to say that all of the types (minus thunder and MKVI+) are utilised by them. I think MKIV is the most common/seen the most. Are you going to build a Luna Wolves force, or are you just confused about the types of armour they where? Count Puppula
Building a pre HH army is on my mind and i think it will be Luna Wolves or perhaps the II or XI legion. Vodunius
GW (both the artists and authors) is just as confused about armour, you'd think since they'd published a rather good article detailing the various armour mks that make sure everyone read it, but noooope. Personally I still regard that article (WD129/RT Compilation) as the definitive source: Mk II - standard suit throughout the great crusade. Mk III - specialized suit designed for boarding actions, used alongaside MkII - never intended as a replacement. Mk IV - began replacing MkII as the standard suit towards the end of the great crusade. Mk V+ - direct results of the heresy Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/172526-confusement-about-armour/#findComment-2039026 Share on other sites
Sons of Horus
they probably used Mk. II, III, IV, and V suits Mk.II was called Crusade Armour Mk.III was called Iron Armour Mk.IV was called Maximus Armour but I'm not too sure about this one Mk.V was called Heresy Armour Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/172526-confusement-about-armour/#findComment-2039051 Share on other sites
Count Puppula
As far as i know the mkV was used by Loyal legions who had limited to no acces to the mkIV armour which was issued to most of the traitor legians. Vodunius
As far as i know the mkV was used by Loyal legions who had limited to no acces to the mkIV armour which was issued to most of the traitor legians. It wasnt so much that they hadn't been issued with suits, more that they hadn't been issued enough spare parts and were forced to re-equip troops with MkII & III so their MkIV could be cannibalized to keep other marines MkIV working. Either way MkV was only designed after the Heresy broke out so wouldn't have been worn by Luna Wolves, however WD129 did also mention that "As Horus's supply position became tenuous Mark 5 suits were scavenged from fallen enemies and used by his forces" so it would be fine for some mid-heresy Sons of Horus to have it. ferrum proeliator
Building a pre HH army is on my mind and i think it will be Luna Wolves or perhaps the II or XI legion. Good to hear that another pre heresy army is on it's way haha! Don't go for II or XI though - You'll be stuck for anything to do, and you'll get a lot of flaming. As for armour: MK II-V should be used as far as the fluff goes. bear in mind that there will be limited amounts of V in the force as this was shipped to Loyalist armies during the heresy and a few made their way to the traitors. Armour should be mostly IV and II. IV is the easiest to sort at the moment (available as a conversion pack from Forge World), whilst II is more difficult. At the moment I can only think of the "Armour through the ages" pack. Hope this helps! Count Puppula
i think i'll go for Luna Wolves or Death guard, i don't like the other Traitor legions enough to Honour them. although i'm not looking forward to all the white i have to paint ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/172526-confusement-about-armour/#findComment-2039097 Share on other sites
Solid Zaku
I'd do Luna Wolves. Death Guard's a little overdone (or so I've seen). Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/172526-confusement-about-armour/#findComment-2039159 Share on other sites
Vodunius
Better yet - Dusk Raiders, as the Death Guard were named before Mortarion was found. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/172526-confusement-about-armour/#findComment-2039212 Share on other sites
Count Puppula
Dusk raiders seem interesting but they wear unpainted armour with crimson right arm and shoulders. i think i'll go for Death Guard, i just might be able to turn ForgeWorld DG update kite into clean pre nurgle mkII helmets.
