Horus Heresy Books

Recommended Posts

I'd like to start reading the HH novels. Do they need to be read in release order, or are they all stand-alone novels and its OK to "jump around"?

I'll start at the beginning if need be, but I really want to jump up to the Dark Angels novels... ;)

Thanks in advance!

I'd recommend in order. One needs to read the series in order in order to get the full effect. Gak, you like Horus, and Tarvitz, and, hell, even Abbadon. To see what happens to them...

Hell, when Khârn is described as a noble warrior, and when you compare him to what he is now...

If I had the chance to start over again and just read them in order, I would. As of right now I have been jumping around because I just need to fill my brain with 40,000 and the bookstores don't always sell every single book in the series. So basically if I was more patient, I would read them in order.

yeah read them in order...

false gods, galaxy in flames, horus rinsing, flight of th eisenstein, and fulgrim are connected.

legion, battle for the abyss, and mechanicum are more stand alone..

(but still read them in order !! )

decent of angels and fallen angels are more stand alone. (but DoA first)

hope it makes sense :)

Tales of Heresy you can read at any time, it is after all a collection of short storys

But read them in order, each book im glad i bought and read (well in battle for the Abyss only real good thing about that book was the Thousand Sons character and the World Eater marine).

Umm, in my opinion read the first three in order, so Horus Rising, False Gods and Galaxy in flames. Then on it's mostly up to you. The Horus heresy series is really made of a few series inside the greater series and some stand alones so read the first three for the build up to the heresy then do as you please. (Of course, first DA book actually takes place mostly before the event of horus in my reading anyway, ah the irony :) )

I second Perry on Tales of the Heresy.

And absolutely, YES, read them in order. It helps to make sense of everything that falls in place, even tho some of the books are read-alone capacity, it would help to know what's going on in the background cuz it does carry a sublte reference to events that took places outside (i.e. in previous books read).

I'm now reading Fallen Angels... it's worth it that I have read the Descent of the Angels cuz it's directly connected. And I reiterate my earlier statements that it helps far more to read them in particular order. 'Sides, I would say Battle of Abyss is pretty much the only book I found to be a bit too slow-paced for my taste.

Oh yeah, Angron and Kharne in Tales of Heresy is AWESOME as well as the "church burning" section of Tales of Heresy is a pure sheer awesome story!!

Horus Rising, False Gods, Galaxy in Flames, Flight of the Eisenstein, and Fulgrim need to be read in order.

I know that Descent of Angels comes before Fulgrim in that sequence, but despite belonging to the series, it doesn't have anything to do with the Heresy.

I haven't read Tales of Heresy or Fallen Angels, but everything else is really stand alone.

The Correct Order is as follows:

- #1: Horus Rising

- #2: False Gods

- #3: Galaxy in Flames

- #4: Flight of the Eisenstein

- #5: Fulgrim

- #6: Descent of Angels

- #7: Legion

- #8: Battle For The Abyss

- #9: Mechanicum

- #10: Tales of Heresy

- #11: Fallen Angels

- #12: A Thousand Son ( March 2010. )

- #13: Prospero Burns ( April 2010. )

Horus Rising - Fulgrim should all be read in order. Flight of the Eisenstein can be skipped but I do not recommend it. After that most of the books are individual with references to events that took place in previous books. I would recommend reading them in order but it is not a must. Tales of Heresy is as said a collection of short stories but still a great book, most of the stories date back a while and can be good to have as a reference to compare (as also stated above) warriors to what they were and what they are now. Fallen Angels is the sequel to Descent of Angels, they must be read in order or you will be lacking knowledge of things brought up in Fallen Angels. Mechanicum, Legion and Battle for the Abyss are novels on their own but there is no real reason not to read them in order.

Just as a guesstimation Prospero Burns will probably be the sequel to A Thousand Son but nobody can say for sure yet. We'll have to wait another year! :tu:
