Slaanesh Subjugator Project WIP

Recommended Posts

Hello All - it's been a while since I last posted as I haven't had much forum time.

I am slowly figuring out how to post pictures - must get a photobucket account! But I have uploaded all my current WIP photos to the user photo galleries under my Titan's album.

How the project started: saw GW's Slaanesh Subjugator PDF. after the last Lucky 13's game I had showed up at the Game with my great Gargant , a Digga stomper and a Ork Fighta Bomma. After all the Imperials had finished having a heart attack about the presence of the Great Gargant I went on to have an enjoyable big game of Apocalypse.

They had another anxiety attack when I told the other players that if they had asked nicely I could have brought them a titan Legion including a Warlord to field against the Orks. Next time!

Anyhow - one of the chaos players allied with us Orks asked me what I had done for chaos. He noted that Epicast never made any chaos models and he thought I had a chaos Reaver.

He then showed me the subjugator PDF.

Like all true Warhammer 40K fanatics I often see toys or models and think "I can make something out of this" my wife laughs everytime I say that as it usually means something else will end up in my closet of doom.

anyhow - I had seen and picked up at KB Toys a Spawn Future Spawn toy because I liked the legs and carapace and thought someday it could be a chaos titan.

The Legs it turns out have great Pin and post joints that can be easily pushed out, I started by stripping all the leg armor off and the unclipping the carapace.

I then took off Spawns head, torso gun [it pushed out] and arms. I then undid the leg pins and reversed the leg joints to get the correct "ostrich like" Subjugator leg look.

Next I cut up the Leg armor to get two hoof shapes from the top of the greaves, cutting out the piston at the back [now front] of the feet left a spot for the hoof split to fit. I cut down the feet to make them smalledr and more hoof like.

I then used Magic sculpt two part grey epoxy to fill in the hoofs and make Greave armor for the front of the lower legs.

See my avatar for the finished product, I will post more step by step after I set up my photobucket account.

cheers Nick

Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks. I now have a photobucket account!

Part 1 of the Conversion scratchbuild on prior posts. I should take a step back and say something about planning, I do plan a little. I got out my old White Dwarf #190 wherein the Slaanesh titans made their debut. There is some nice artwork by Blanche? and some color pics of painted Subjugator Epic models.

Looking at the GW PDF I measured the chaos warrior outline .5 inch vs the Subjugator hoof to top of tail gun 3.5" this gave me a rough scale. IE the Subjugator is 7 times as tall as a chaos Marine. Taking a regular plastic Marine from Second edition he is 1.25" tall so I planned on a 8.75" or a bit taller Subjugator.

After reviewing the plastic parts of the Spawn kit I decided the only bit I was keeping was the lower half of the Torso, the legs and the thigh armor. The rest would have to be scratchbuilt. So I drew up a profile plan for the head.

Digging in my Bitz drawer - I found a couple of sheets of Balsa foam from Micromark. Bought long ago for another project but never used. The product claims to have zero memory and is easy to sand and shape. OK lets give it a go!

I started with the Legs as they are usable, first I turned the knee joints around. Then I cut the top half of the torso off. Next I made the hoof shapes from the leg armor. Last I puttied on lower leg armor and the rough torso/waist shape

and here is a close up of the lower legs with puttied detail and half round bead rivets

I did a bit of a bitz box dive to find some robotech parts and some pipe that would add detail and become the Defiler claw /arm holder as I planned on using Defiler front Claws as the basis for the Hellslicers. I also added an old Fantasy shield to the lower pelvis - I plan to paint this House Devine colors then emblazon a Slaanesh symbol over it.

While the Putty dried [it takes about 2 hours here in the Nevada summer]. I started work on the Balsa foam shape. I rough cut 3 pieces, one with the tail and two side pieces to glue on either side. Using Titebond wood glue it dried in no time outdoors. I then sanded it with a 100 grit block to get the shape I wanted - I checked against my profile drawing several times to keep the shape right, final sanding with progressively finer sand paper.

Here is the final sanded head with some plastic strip detail added

I was able to use evergreen strip to rough out the trim and some plastic card and a compass to make the eye shapes. The eyes are plastic half domes from a craft shop with holes drilled in them to match the WD illustration. I also have craft shop half eggs made of wood that are perfect for this project. The armor stripping is finished by using white modelling putty and a sanding file. Before gluing the strip plastic on I gave the entire finished head 3 coats of semi gloss clear lacquer to help seal the pores in the balsa and to give a good surface for superglue. For the chin mounted Doomblaster I used a wood half egg and an old Space Crusade Conversion beamer from the bitz box.

I realized at this point that the Leg articulation really works - the headless legs could be made to walk pretty realistically "chicken style" so I decided I wanted a dynamic pose to show this off on a permanent base that would keep the model safe on the table. Another dig in the bitz box found some 100mm round acrylic blank bases a friend in Las Vegas cut for me. Perfect! add some converted 3rd edition plastic ruin bits and I have a plan on how the themed base will look. Now my themed base will eventually contain 2 cadians huddled behind the wall - the wounded cadian from the metal Cmd set and a kneeling buddy.

With the base roughed out I could try poses and found I like one leg bent and resting on a smashed pillar and the other leg at full extension - this makes the Subjugator look ready to race forwards.

Trying out the various components with blue tack gave me the following looks - note space Marine at his feet for size comparison:

I'll post tackling the Claws and arms as well as guns tomorrow.

thanks for the comments - I think when the build is finished it will all be proportional - I'm working from an Epic scale model and so far I'm on target for sizes.

On with the build - the head has to be completed with 2 tormentor cannons - the best bitz I could find to make these were plastic cones from the Doctors Ear exam device plus plastic rod and rivets.

I had to cut the cones at an angle then create a curved cut out to match the Slaaneshii design.

For the Hellslicers - I decided I wanted real crab claws - I played with carving a pair of big Daemonnette wooden claws to look like the epic model but they were too cartoony.

I used Snow Crab claws, boiled and cleaner then filled with putty for strength.

Here is the Carapace Tormentor Cannon

And the Tail Cannon

Finally two views of the completed titan - it now looks a lot more proportional and is recognizable as a subjugator

I will add some grille detail under the nose around the doom siren gun and more detail to the base.

The Head will be magnetized on for transport ease and the arms are fully poseable.

Next up after the finishing touches - painting.

I haven't posted much in a long time either, but that is top notch work. :D ;)

That bio-mechanical nightmare will strike fear and terror in any opponent facing that across the table. And the crab claws are a perfect touch.

Inventive and truly awesome work. Insane scratch build. I wish people on this site would be more vocal about scratch builds like this. Either jealousy or lack of understanding on how to go about creating these kinds of builds leave them on the sidelines staring with a green face. I really dig what you've done here and the crab legs came out great on this model. Can't wait to see it painted. My only comment would be to maybe add some guitar strings or tubing into the claws from the mechanical areas for a more bio-mechanical look. This model has a modern retro 40k style I really like.

Cool stuff :o

Thanks for the feedback

I need to do some detail work on the front and back of the head to finish it off and then complete the base. I plan on adding some chains and armor "piercings" after the paint job to further detail the Slaaneshiiness.

My main idea was to get a quick project done so I had something to try out on the table.

Here is a head on look at the Subjugator, I like the poseable claws and will add some more cabling [i have the pewter cast guitar string cable from Jeff Wilhelm] to the body and Claw/arm attachments.

I see the Hellslicers as a "gift" of Slaanesh to the fallen House Devine Knights marking them as disciples of the Prince of Pleasure.
