Pup looking for advice

Recommended Posts

First off a greeting hello to all from a new member. Now, I have recently started a space wolves army and just learned of a new codex coming out. My questions are these ONE: Is it really possible that some of my units might be unable to be used in this new codex due to their load out(like my terminators with thunder hammer+storm shield or multiple power fists in one unit)? TWO: Are there any units that i would be safe in buying modeling and painting up that wont really change at all in the new dex? and lastly do you guys think there will be a huge flock of newcomers to space wolves once the new dex is out? -thanks

Question 1 - I don't believe anyone really knows so it's tough to say what may be allowed and what may go away.

Question 2 - Blood Claws and Grey Hunters with respective basic weaponry (i.e. Bolt Pistol/CCW or Bolter). Dreadnoughts. Vehicles for the most part me thinks.

Question 3 - Most definately, however we will soon know which are here for the FotM or are true Son's of Russ.

Thank you very much muzzyman for your help....hmm although I am a little hesitant to get any troops choice with the new upgrade box being talked about. dreadnought sounds fun though. Please pardon my newbyness as I am not only new to the wolves but all of warhammer. Also any painting tips/links anyone would suggest would be much appreciated. -Thanks
Its pretty safe that our HQs will still be there, except maybe Wolf Gaurd Battle Leaders with heavy weapons. Its also gauranteed well have Dreadnaughts of some kind, so a vendread is ok. Predator Annihilators are pretty safe, as are whirlwinds.
thanks SO much for all of the advice everyone you guys are helpin a young pup get his bearings on the battle field. I think I am going to go with a heavy support.....thinking maybe a vehicle my only heavy support right now is a pack of long fangs so any suggestions on whirlwind vs predator vs land raider?
Vindicator ;) Seriously though, these things are ace in my book, able to take out droves of troops, and they excell at taking out vehicles within 24" (2d6 for armor pen, pick the highest dice). the only downside to them is the 24" range, and the fact that they are scary enough to make for big targets to a smart player....good thing they are cheap!

Okay, vehicles.

1. Land raider, can carry a full squad plus duke it out with other tanks, expensive

2. Rhino, can carry a full squad and dies easy, cheap

3. Razorback, can carry a small squad and try to fight

4. Predator, no transport but a solid killer

5. Vindis and whirlies are both support

So once again I ask for your kind advice. I have been fighting against one of my friends necron army lately I was hoping for some advice. From searching around I have basically heard "go after the warriors first and ignore the lord and monolith" but any other advice on tactics or on ways to equip my troops would be greatly appreciated.

Ok whelp - pull up a chair and fetch me an ale and I shall tell ye the sagas.

As far as models goes for now, keep it simple. Have a couple of medium sized packs with standard weapons and a few special weapons. If worst comes to worst, buy the new boxes and break the packs down a bit. A couple of reasonably generic HQ's should also be fine - a Wolf Priest with a Power Weapon and a pistol plus a Wolf Guard Battle Leader in TDA with a CC weapon and a Combi Weapon, or a pair of Claws should be fine. Dreads, Preds and APCs should be fine as well - and you would do well to heed OID's wise words on Vindicators, especially should you join us with our Mechanised Great Companies (though frankly, Vindies are good all round.) Don't make anything that's likely to be invalidated (TDA squads with 4 Heavy Weapons and suchlike.)

When it comes to the Necron menace, we are well equipped to purge them from the Emperors worlds. Necrons suffer in Hand to Hand combat, so close with the warriors and punish them. Monoliths are very, very tough but get a Dreadnought into Close Combat with it and watch the fireworks - ancient living metal is no match for an ancient living warrior! You want to force the phase out, so focus on units with the "Necron" rule - ignore Pariahs, Monoliths and Spyders unless you need to hit them for some reason, or you have an opportunity (using, say a Tri Las Pred to attack 2 Warriors is foolish if there is a monolith behind them (unless it'll force a Phase out, of course))

Now, where's my ale?

Here Vass.

I just started the wolves recently and at the moment have made a basic GH squad of 6 and a WGBG of 5 with twin TH wolf lord all in TDA. I havent made them with loads of the cheesy stuff we have but basicish. Dont go overboard before the new dex is out.

Welcome! I can heartily agree that vehicles, beyond our beloved Russ Exterminator, should stay about the same. I'd stay away from the Land Raider Redeemer. I think it will be there, I hope it will be, but no sense in tempting fate. I do highly advise you to try out a dread. A very safe model that WILL be there, and offers AMPLE opportunity to sink your fangs in all proper like!

First off thank you all for your army building advice I offer you all a mug of my finest ale. However I once more seek your advice. My question is how might I go about removing glued on heads because I am wanting all open heads but have already made some guys with helmets. Also would just cutting off the storm shield from terminators be the best way to attach a fantasy shields? I was going to attach some skaven and beastmen shields. As always thanks for all the help.
Thanks warhorse! I have sadly used plastic cement and will have to find an exceptable way for a noob to cut off some heads.

Sometimes a long time in the freezer will still cure this... Try that before cutting.. Or see if you can find a de-bonder safe for plastics!

If your carefull you can slip a knife under their chin and cut the neck part of the head off. Then take the replacement head, cut it's neck off just under the chin and glue it on. It works but it takes a bit of patience. I did that recently when I stuck the wrong head on one of my Rhino Gunners.
