Is the Ravenor series worth a read?

Hey everyone,

I read Eisenhorn a few months ago and i just finished the gaunts ghost series and deciding that Dan Abnett is one of the best writers i have ever known of (apart from when he killed bragg, corbec and took away milo:angry:) and i saw the ravenor omnibus and was wondering if it was worth a read?

Ok how about YOU DONT PUT FREAKING SPOILERS IN A MESSAGE LIKE THAT... Im reading the series right now and well thanks alot for the heads up you freaking idiot. I was going to comment on the Ravenor series as I have read the all but now the only response you deserve is a sever kick in the ass.

I agree on the spoilers bit, please be carefull about that. (I didn't know that either as I'm half way in the Ghosts series.)

So Ravenor is available in an omnibus now? Cool I really liked Eisenhorn, so I was pretty curious about ravenor.

Without spoilers, is Ravenor a 3 book set with a finished storyline?

Not cool on the spoilers! Loose lips sink ships!!!!!!

For me Eisenhorne is by far the best 40K series by a long chalk. 'Ravenor' is very good, 'Ravenor returned' is good for the first 1/2 - 2/3rds way through and then starts to lose the plot and then the situation doesn't really get better for 'Ravenor Rogue' (which, ahem, 'borrows' quite a lot of ideas from the last book in the 'Inquisition Wars' trilogy such as the possibility of webways and it wasn't a great idea then!).

Definitely not DA's best works but then this is coming from the guy who thinks that 'Double Eagle' is his second best novel (after the Eisenhorne trilogy) and takes some stick for upholding that view!!! heh heh heh

Pretty much everything that ArmouredWing said. ;) The Ravenor series isn't as good as Eisenhorn, but then again, nothing else from the Dan Abnett or BL is as good as Eisenhorn. That's top of the heap.

But Ravenor is an enjoyable read nonetheless. Recommended. :tu:

...Although you've got to give Dan the nod for the ship master who claims his lineage comes down from the long lost squ.......... ;) (which in itself is another reference to Ian Watson's Inquisition War trilogy).
Oh by the way. That is f'd up, when you talked about finishing Gaunt's Ghost's. Thank god I finished those a few months ago. If I had read your comment before I finished the novels. I would have hunted you down and pierced your heart with strait silver. Sure as sure, you big dumbo =)

I think the first 40k book I read was Ian Watson's Inquisition War, which got me into 40k after Dawn of War (pc game). That led to Eisenhorn, which is still one of my favorites, and Ravenor as well, which I really enjoy. Hopefully Dan will do a Ravenor book going after a supposedly heretical Eisenhorn, that would be pretty awesome.

So yes, you should read it.

As I think its already been said in the thread Mr Abnett is doing a series which was dubbed "Ravenor vs Eisenhorn". But I went to the black library live event at warhammer world in April with ArmouredWing and got to talk to the man himself (Dan not ArmouredWing although i did talk to him too). Dan confirmed that he is wrting a trilogy and it will be called the Bequin trilogy after the eponimous Elizabeth. (Note the sneaky mention in Ravenor too).

I'd just add on a personal note that while i think DA is a great writer i thought the Ravenor series lacked focus. Eisenhorn was great so i am hoping for a return to form for Bequin. For me 'The guns of Tanith' is his finest work.

Yea the end of Ravenor Rogue seemed... a bit forced, I guess would be the only comment I can think of. I didn't DISLIKE it, but I have read better from him.

A new trilogy sounds great, but I'll bet he won't even start on it till his Horus Heresy obligations are over, and there are probably a few more left.
