New Renegade army-the Devourers (i think)

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I just got back into he hobby recently after a year break and I've got an idea for a new army.

Ok, so heres the rough backbone of the idea:

21st Founding. The Heralds of Chyribdis were formed from Rogal Dorn geneseed to stand guard over the Scyllan system in the Segmentum Obscurus. They had performed their task staunchly, with help from their parent chapter, the Galvanisors, up until their betrayal.

Their homeworld was the planet Gorgoroth, the central planet in the system. Before the arrival of technology, the planets natives had bore witness to the strange happening on the plaent many times. This was a massive whirlpool that occured every 70 years due to a strange lunar eclipse. The natives thought it was a god from below the waves coming to feed and it was feared and respected. They named it 'Chyribdis' in their tongue, meaning 'Great Devourer'. It was worshipped and sacrifices made to it before the education of the Imperium tought them the Imperial faith. During the 21st founding, a young space marine chapter was stationed on Gorgoroth, who named themselves 'Heralds of Chyribdis', as they would begin recruiting just prior to when the whirlpool occured. Centuries(?, or tousands of years?) later, a great warp storm threatened the Gorgoroth and the government began to lose control of the people. Being of the 21st founding, they of course were cursed. But not in a physical manner, but another. They were physcologically unstable, and were prone to outbursts of physic blasts. They had to have regular drug intake and purification to maintain control of themselves.

When the warp storm crisis was coming to a climax, chapter master Raal Morannon began to doubt the planetary govenors leadership abilities during this time. But unknown to others, chaos began to whisper to him and he slowy grew paranoid.

Eventually, Raal Morannon and his honour gaurd climbed the stairs to the main Librarium in the capital, to arrest the govenor. He accused the govenor of heresy. The PDF tried to intervene this sent him over the edge. He saw enemies everywhere and thought they must all be purged. He killed the govenor and ordered an attack on the capital city.

Every person was slaughtered and the rest of the planet went into dissarray. Those who refused to bow to him and the Dark Gods where killed. Word reached the Imperium, and they sent the Galvanisors chapter to exterminate the Heralds of Chyribdis. It took two years for them to penetrate the chapter keep and a further six to get to Raal Morannon's chamber.

The fighting was fierce and there were not many Galvanisors left. They were out numbered and faced certain death. THeir chapter master was slain in mortal combat with Raal Morannon and he offered them a deal, join me or die.

Few accepted and the other fought to the last man.

Soon after the Imperial Navy ordered planetkill of Gorgoroth. The traitorous marines had no choice but to flee. They flew the space hulk out of orbit with citizens loyal to them and were swallowed by chaos into the eye of terror. The warp strom finally engulfed the planet and the Imperial Navy ships there were also sucked into the storm and deystroyed.

When they were spewes into the eye of terror, they stumbled across an unamed daemon world and settled there.

Chaos was not interested in the chapter for nothing; the Dark Gods made the Heralds of Chyribdis's arrival on the worlld rough, until they were desparate to survive. The Dark Gods made a deal with the chapter master during this time; to retrieve a long list of arcane items they desired for them or their followers, and in return they would spare the unfortunate chapter and grant them ownership of the daemon world. Raal Morannon agreed and the Devourers were born.

ORGANISATION:

The Devourers second in command, 1st Company Commander Zhar Karonnd, Arch Sorceror of the warband who possesses the Album Arcanum, the list of Arcane Items;convinced Raal Morannon that to find the Artifacts they needed, they must aquire as much knowledge as they could. So, the Devourers are seen mainly raiding places of knowledge like archives and monastaries. They strike out from their daemon world, Gorgoroth Secundus, butchering or capturing planets' natives and looting what they want, in attempts to find the items.

Their vast array of knowledge means they have very advanced technology, making them extremely efficient at acheiving their goals. They return to Gorgoroth Secundus after conquests to give back to the dark gods and regroup for their next assualt. Like many Chaos Space marine warbands, the begin by attacking a planet with planetstrike, space lasers and bombing, followed by drop pod assualt. The backbone of their army are their troops, and hence they form the brunt of the assaults.

In times of conquest drifting warbands often flock to their side, perhaps for a share in the spoils of war or even ownership of planets. So it is not rare to see many colours under the command of the devourers. They manage to survive by capturing geneseed from space marine labs or from corpses of marines, or even attacking other warbands when desparate. Their 'Stock' is comprized of the traitors from Gorgoroth and prisoners taken in war, brainwashed to serve the Dark Gods.

Relations with the Legions are neutral to say the least. They prefer to work away from the Legions so they can take all the spoils and perhaps an underlying waryness of the threat they possess. Although, they have worked with them on occasion.

During Abaddons 13th Black Crusade they sent a large portion of their forces to aid the other forces of Chaos. They retieved the Spear of Kal'Esh; an ancient Eldar weapon requested by Slaanesh.

Also, during the Fall of Medusa V, they sent two companies to retrieve a lost Plaguehelm worn by a long forgotten daemon prince of Nurgle. However, time ran out and they had to leave Medusa V, but on their way back, without the Plaguehelm, contact was lost with them and they have not been heard of since. And the Devourers have not made the mistake of failing to find the Artifacts since.

Ok, so thats what I've got so far some of it is quite rough so C&C is extremely welcome.
