What's in a name?

So i've almost completed painting my GK after a year or two, but one area remains bare on all of them... the shoulder scroll... as much as i've tried, i simply can't come up with names that feel like they work well. SO... where did you draw your names from, if not just from your head? any culture that's names scream gk?

I use a combination of greek and latin, focusing on their common Roman background (so instead of classical greek, use medieval greek names). Things like Photios, Flavius, Nikephoros, Tiberius, etc. My idea is mostly to take inspiration from the medieval roman/byzantine period, since the way I see Grey Knights (mobile, well armored, highly disciplined, and deadly both at range and up close) maps very well to the cataphract.

I actually found a website that has a list of Angel names that are taken from many different religions.

Here is the link: http://www.angelsghosts.com/angel_names

The best part is that some of the names in the list belong to angels that supposedly fight and destroy daemons.

I named all of my GKs after stars. Every squad is named after a constellation, and the squad leader (i.e., Justicar, BC, GK Hero) is named after the brightest star in the constellation.

Many star names are Arabic, which are pretty good. But most of those have Latin equivalents, too, if you'd prefer that.

Wow... you guys did research for yours? Lol...

I'll tell ya what I did but be forewarned it makes the army "grow" on you that much more. Every Gk in my force and indeed the dreadnoughts as well bear the last name of a friend of mine. And all squads are named and composed of people from that grouping. I.E. friends I made in Washington state are in the "Evergreen Squad" and such. But this is probably just me, obviously this will be my chosen army for ever. :D

I just put stuff together, or use names/words that I have heard in films, games, books etc. Sometimes variations of real names and words.

Brother Joric.

Brother Meridus

Justicar Corvus

Pretty much whatever sounds go together in my head, inspired or otherwise. Although certain suffices seem to fit the theme better, i.e. -us, -ic, in my examples. Quite Roman-esque.

My HQs are normally named after me, however. Imperial armies can use my name straight up, xenos use my own variation of my surname and an imposed prefix. It's a me thing....

This is interesting that you bring it up. I haven't been thinking about the names of my Knights per se but definitely been thinking about how to distinguish the squads. Right now I have them all with the letters "LII" on the shoulder pad which stands for 52 in the roman numeral, representing the company they belong to. And then I have different greek symbols following it, standing for the different squads. I could see you doing a lot of cool things with the names like naming your justicar "Boromir" cause he always ends up being the last one alive and taking a 30 boy ork squad on his own but gets his 3 kills in before he goes down. But really doing that makes your models really personable and you want it to be significant. Maybe I should name them after the characters from "300" which this is my 300th post so quick quote: "Spartans? What is your profession?" "You see, old friend? I brought more soldiers than you did." :whistling:

I guess I'm also going a different route with my names as well.... I'm naming mine after players of my favorite Soccer/Football team, AS Roma. Hence, I will be having names like Brother-Captain Totti, Justicar Motta, Brother De Rossi, and Brother Cassetti just to name a few.

It is always interesting to see why people name their marines what they do.... It is kind of limitless what you can do as there really is no right or wrong.

OT but pertaining to my post: I hate saying Soccer, it SHOULD be universally called football!

OT but pertaining to my post: I hate saying Soccer, it SHOULD be universally called football!

Yes, OT, but FWIW, "soccer" is actually the British name for the sport of association football. It's just as proper as the more commonly used shortened name "football".

OK, back to the normal thread. :P (I'm a soccer nut.)

I usually use names from various movies and video games of heros that I like or am fond of (Erdrick, Cecil, Madmartigan, Kael), or names of characters from various Role Playing Games I've used (GK Brother-Captain Kyris, Chaplain Theo) or various personalities made up after myself or various nicknames or word plays (Colonel Kit Pyykkönen, his sister Nicole, etc). This also ends up with interesting quirky things (Interrogator Kenneth McCormick (You killed Kenny, you b@$tard), Explicator William Thatcher (Mr. Bill), Veteran Sergeant Dwayne Hicks) that lots of people will laugh as they get the joke. I also will put friends or gaming buddies in various roles, using word plays of their names or their characters (Gaab the Ogryn bodyguard, Veteran Sister Superior Adelicia, Veteran Sergeant Jerimo Sagar).

I always had to wonder about the American attitude of continuing to use it... I mean, here's a sport that is played JUST with the feet, around the entire world.. I know.. let's call it Soccer! Then we'll make up our own version of that and Rugby, which involves carrying and throwing the ball primarily with the HANDS, with essentially no kicking, and we'll call THAT football! Talk about the one or two fingered salute to the world...

The best brief reason I have found for why "soccer" predominates in the US can be fond on wikipedia. Do some more digging, and much more detailed fascinating (no, really!) history will be dug up for why this has happened.

OK, now, back to the Inquisition!

I tend to use 'Contemporary English Language' names, Cap't Jack has had a long career along side Ass't Sgt. Samuels. Sometimes Conan the Librarian shows up, but recently it's been Chazz the Chaplain. When the captain of the third company needs a break, Commander Cody has been known to step in.
I named all my guys after the Moons of Saturn (figured that was appropriate)...the more important models are the larger moons...

I would worry that Saturn doesn't have enough moons, but checking my facts reveals 61 after including the irregular little ones.

That's definitely enough moons, unless you want to play Apocalypse. Or re-enact the First War for Armageddon.
