Foes of the Spacewolves

Ok so my buddy is beside himself with the upcoming release of the SW codex. He needs an opponent to beat him into submission(or to be beaten ), so who would give a good hardcore fight the the SW's? I won't play Chaos Deamons but everyone else is fine. Please bear in mind he will play hardcore, he is extreamly competitive (little bugga paints like he's possesed too).

Well, what does he normally bring to the table and what's his playing style?

I would say it's not too dissimilar to other marine armies. Bring as much AP2 and AP3 weaponry as you can muster, and failing that, overwhelm him with number of saves to take.

If he's heavily mechanised, bring high strength weaponry...

But really, what does he bring to the table?

And what will you be playing? Recommendations for a Tau army would be different from the ones for a bug army ^_^

I don't play anything yet. I have played many 40k armies but quite a while ago. I have no idea what he will bring...proberbly the most brutal unit he can and as many as he can. I need an army thats competitive for both of us. He'll get bored if he continually gnawls on my bones ^_^ as will I.

If your looking for an opponent for Space Wolves, go with their blood enemies, the Thousand Sons or the Dark Angels...

If had them be a challenge for my wolves a few times, especially when the 1k sons could summon deamons. My real trouble comes from my usuall opponants Emperors Children or his Drop podding Iron Hands, though.

I have trouble against dark elder 30+ lance lists. but seriously who hasn't ^^

but you should not just choose an army for its sole effectiveness against one opponent. every army out there can be played competetively, the most important thing is you can identify with your choice. nothing sucks more than playing an army whose playstyle and feeling you do not like.

That's a very good point. If you like shooting/mobility, Tau would b e a lot of fun. If you like to get up close and personal, Orks or 'Nids. Fast and nasty? Eldar. And of course the Thousand Sons suggestion is the classic rivalry, or another SM unit.

In that case read up on the current armies, look at the models and pick which ever army you think would suit you best.

If you're an assaulty type person avoid Tau. If you're a 'hang back and shoot' kinda guy avoid Khorne...

I'd love to play DE but seriously they are old, crappy models(I'd hate to finish an army and have them launch a new range)...is that ever going to happen.

Orks sound interesting and I have the BR orks so their a posibility. Would SM do ok....not fluffy I know but?

Eldar are just to damn.......pretty <_<

Honestly I'm just not into CD, at this point it comes down to nilla marines or orks. Orks shoud win hands down...but all the new shiny stuff that SM have is distracting (new scouts and land speeder looks sweet...and the ironclad woohoo). SO last votes orks or SM or either?

Thanks again

Orks is da biggest an da stompest!

IMHO, orks would offer the biggest challenge. They have many units that can be specialized to be a real problem (Warboss & Nob bikers, Kommandos, etc.)

These units can be combined with a large horde for additional protection and shooty goodness. And don't forget your battle wagons! AV 14 in the front with str 10 hits on tank shock for a little over 100 pts?

(Paint it red)

Orks. They're traditional, they're mean, they're green, and they're only slightly less unpleasant than a Space Wolf with a hangover.

lol, can't say much against that.

Tau have always been the ones I have the most trouble with. Crons get phased out, other Marines have never held up once I get close enough, nids I keep moving and make them chase me through a hail of fire, Orks... well acctually Orks I don't think I've ever played against about 750pt games.

At 750pt, Tau is fairly easy to beat, and remain so until around 1500+. After that there is just so many guns! Fireknives are absolute demons against Marines (Plasma/Rocket). Railheads nail our armour, and can be tricky to kill, and kroot make a good speed bump to give your firewarriors that bit of extra time to shoot at us (Hell they're marines in CC aside from the armour saves and Ld).

Space Wolves are a close quarters based army, so we generally have to use either pods or rhinos to get in your face before we really start to hurt you. Tau can be very mobile, while still dumping a storm of fire into our units. Harder to pin down then Mech Eldar. Stay ahead of him, or make him run in circles after units, and you'll provide him with a nasty little learning curve.

I have decieded on orks.

Orks is a good choice for you, and is my #2 out of the four armies that I currently have. There are two great things about the army that I would like to highlight: 1 ) Recently updated Codex that is fully 5th edition ready, and allows you to build some very strong lists, and 2 ) Almost the entire model range is in plastic, with the exception of a few special characters, which means it is quicker and cheaper to model your force (even if you do need a lot more Boyz than your buddy needs Space Wolves).

The B&C is, of course, a power-armor only forum, so if you need advice on what to buy and how to start an army list, head over to The Waaagh! to get some advice and have a look around. If you want more advice you can always send me a PM, too, and I'll try to point you in the right direction.
