What do we think about the Wulfen?

I do not know that much about Space Wolf fluff, at least not when it comes to how we treat our unlucky brothers, the Wulfen.

How do we treat them and what do we think about them? Do we shun them? Do we pity them?

How exactly do a wulfen behave?

Would it be plausible or fluffy for the Wolf Lord om my Great Company to have a Wulfen as a pet/bodyguad.

I actually just finished reading the first part of the Space Wolf omnibus and as far as i can tell once they see someone becoming Wulfen they eliminate them if you want i can find the direct qoute in the book just let me know.

They are ferocious beasts, the canis helix that uncovered the beast in them, takes them over transforming then into a werewolf type monster.

They kill anything and everything around them.

When a recruit loses the internal battle with the wolf and they become a Wulfen then they are eliminated.

Battle brothers that lose the battle after many years can sometimes still fight for the chapter. Berek Thunderfist had a wolf guard fall to the Wulfen, (later on in space wolf series) Mikel I think his name was, he fought with his Wolf Lord and they died fighting side by side. Ragnar himself took a blood claw that had fallen to the Wulfen and delivered him into the care of the Wolf priests. The 13th company has by far the most Wulfen and they still fight with their brothers.

Wulfen aren't simply mindless animals depending on the battle brother, they can still recognize their brothers and will die to protect them.

We both pity and despise our brothers who fall to the curse. Those aspirants who are cast unto the wilds of Asaheim to survive and who fall are to be hunted for they have let the beast consume them.

Further on in life and most of the Sons of Russ get accustomed to the beast. Some will, however still allow the beast to overwhelm them. Sometimes this is for a short, brutal battle and can be a boon. Sometimes, it is more pronounced. Many will die shortly afterwards as a result of battle psychosis. The remainder may be controlled for a short while, but as is Fenrisian custom are often allowed a heroes death.

According to Wolf's Honour they will attack anything around them as in the prologue it explains how Hogan, The Wolf Guard of the Blood Claws, attacked a blood claw called Erdwulf and spit his skull because he tries to stop him from hacking away at the corpses of the Xenos scum.
not all the time though;)

Which is why I said sometimes.....

The ale is affecting you Brother.... clearly you need another!!

while i won't skip the ale i meant a wulfen doesn't always recognize his brothers

I didn't say they did, I said that depending on the battle brother they CAN, not that they necessary do.

Meh quirks of the language.....

On with the Ale!!!

The treatment of the above is right, but some, like the 12th Great Co. lord Bran Redmaw, are affected by the Curse as well, and will shelter and aid those afflicted. To be a Wulfen does not, brothers, mean one is a slavering beat barely controlled, feral in all natures inside and out. Look no further than my own Wolf Lord Redmaw, or the honorable Lord Blackmane, and you can see.

A wulfen wouldn't be a 'pet', as he is a brother, to be lamented and feared for having lost his battle, or in the midst of it. But as a bodyguard, I would. I imagine Bran himself has drawn individuals with the mark to his side.

wulfen are like BA DC. they nead a wolf priest to control them. They are not mindless killers but they are no longer SW marines. they will turn on their battle brothers if not restrained by a wolf priest or somebody with enough willpower to exert over them. It all depends how far they have fallen to the curse. Rememeber Sw have a hierachy just like a real wolf pack so if a Wulfen sees a blood claw he might just eat him for breakfast.

Some just let the wulfen takeover in the heat of the battle whilst others are fully werewolf like and although not mindless as such they are little more than a beast.

Just look at the 13nth co- if tended by a wolf priest theyre alright, but theyve lost an important part of their humanity. That ability to seperate themselves from the beast is gone... their feral natures in control.

You can befriend a wild animal, you can live with it, you can feed it and you can even teach it a few things... but it will never forget that it doesnt need you and that you are potentially a rival... or food.

This is basically correct. As the Wulfen have no real "higher" brain functions (reason, logic, restraint etc) they are subordinate to the beast within. It can be contained, and controlled but can never, ever be thought of as a friend, or even a person. To "weaponise" them and give them the chance do die with honour is the best we can do.

Death with honor. Savage man-animal with extensive bio-enhancements and power armor. Spacecraft. There's a few Darwin Awards in there, no doubt.

On a more serious note, what does the Curse of the Wulfen actually do? Just shut down their higher brain functions?

Humm werewolf features with razor sharp teeth and claws and lots of hair lol

Yeah, in otherwords, look up some little historical tidbits of Norse "berzerkers" or bear serker's. You will definately see where they got the inspiration for Wulfen. As Abnet puts it, the line from lore to SW is rather short and direct.
