Pre-Heresy Wolves

I'm sure this topic has been put up before, but I was looking for some new views and ideas. With the new Codex coming out soon, I am looking to re-vamp my Great Company. I've always thought that the traditional paint scheme of Shadow Grey/ SW grey looked too blue, so Pre-Heresy colors are what I'm going for. What Colors do y'all use, and what inspires your conversions? I have most of my army in oven cleaner now, ready for the new paint job.....

I think Wolf Lord Mjolnir's grey is spot on....he uses adeptus battley grey, a badab black wash, then high lights with the battlegrey mixed with codex grey.

My wolves are a 50-50 space wolves grey and shadow grey mix...almost a perfect match for the GH pic thats floating around. I wish now I'd painted them like Mjolnir's. I'm not stripping them, so onward with that scheme.

Mjol, has a really great color scheme using the GW paints.

If you are not opposed to using non-GW paints; these are the colors I used, they are from the Vallejo paint line.

Base armor color: VMC 991 Dark sea grey

Highlight mix color: VMC 870 medium sea grey

The shading color is VMC Panzer grey

My inspiration comes mostly for the Horus Heresy Art Books.

Personnally I use really dark grey for the pre heresy wolves. you could just use codex grey if you want. I really like the old 2nd edition blue/purple SW. Its just a shame i cant ever get the right shade.

But rememeber there is no hard and fast rule. As long as they have some grey any colour will do. The shades vary from company to compnany or even squad to squad.

Loving these recipes, anyone have pics of the completed schemes, or links to the threads here? I'm starting to try and examine paint schemes to keep myself occupied.

Here is a finished GH.

More pics can be found in the Great Hall link in my Sig.

Mega, is that a converted MK IV chest? If so, you so owe us a tutorial brother!

I'm working on it, I've got a roll of Kneadite (GS) on order, so I can finish it since some of the last pics turned out horrible.

Good, I can be patient! I especially like that color too... I may just try for some Heresy-era wolves. Bjorn, in the flesh :D

Did someone say Bjorn? ;-)

Here is a close up of the colour scheme:

I do this by:

1. Basecoat of Adeptus Battlegrey

2. Badab black wash

3. All plates painted with a 50/50 mix of Adeptus Battlegrey and codex grey

4. Edge highlight of a 50/50 mix of codex grey and fortress grey

Mjol

Good on the cloaks.. I have like... 20 something, maybe 30.. Huzzah GD bits table <_<

I have a ton of Chaos warrior and Marauder bits for Wolf Scouts and PA, even the legs to try some conversions... My only question is... Was the Legion structure any different than the current Chapter?

hey Mega, this is a wierd question, but did you build up the highlights and THEN shade in with the Panzer? It may be just me, but it looks almost as is you shaded that GH last. Don't laugh, I've seen it done before.

No I painted the model Panzer Grey first, followed by painting as normal.

By the way, I plan ontrying both Mjolnir and Mega's paint schemes/methods and see which works out best for me. I may not strip all my "blue" Wolves either; I think I can make them individualistic and tie them all together at the same time, though I don't know how yet.....

Codex Grey basecoat

Blend up to Fortress Grey

Washes of Leviathan Purple, Asurmen Blue, and Devlan Mud

Re-highlight/feather with Codex Grey, and then Fortress Grey

All I can say is that the pictures posted on here are awesome! So far as painting goes, these are the colors I use:

By the way, they are all Tamiya Acrylic colors--

Matte Black base coat

IJN Grey (Kure Arsenal)

Bright Yellow (Flat)

Red (Flat)

White (Flat)

Light Grey

Bronze

Flesh

Tan

Aged Leather

Jet Exhaust (not sure about the name on that one, my paints aren't nearby)

I know there are probably some better paints out there, i.e. Vallejo, but I've worked on model planes for a long time now, and Tamiya is always what I've used. It's more of a comfort thing than anything, really.

One thing I've noticed w/ the Tamiyas is that they are extremely easy to work with, and they're also very forgiving. They're easily made into washes and inks and they dry-brush well, also.

Like many others on this subject, I've found that the SW's bluish-grey scheme is just too light for my taste; the IJN Grey is a great main color that gives the wolves a tough, gritty feel, IMO.

The only paints I would stay away from, though, are Testors/Italeri. I used those for a long time as well, and they are probably the worst paints I've used. I tried them on a couple of my first minis, and I wound up stripping them off. Tamiya was suggested by a local hobby shop, and I couldn't be more pleased.

Good luck!
