Unnamed Crusade

Recommended Posts

Well, it's been a while since I've played much 40k. I have a sizeable Ork army from when I started college (bad moonz glam blam bad moonzzzzz wham damn - we da bad moonz bad moonzzzzz.....)

Anyway, i thought it was time for a change. I'm looking to put together a new army, primarily in the greys, based partly on my old army, the Iron Phoenix chapter. I'm a better painter than I was 10 years ago but there's still about 3000 points of Iron Phoenix marines in my brother's basement that he occasionally beats on with his biel-tan. So as not to let those guys go to waste, i'm thinking that the new guys will represent a spin-off section of the old army (like the sub-factions of the dark and blood angels). Where the Iron Phoenix Marines were originally an imperial fists host devastated in battle, killed to the man and brought back only by their salvaged gene-seed (hence the phoenix), I thought that these might be a particularly zealous group of those Marines who believe that if they fight with strength and honor in the name of the emperor, that he himself might be resurrected as they were.

Here's the rough job, just slapped colors on a black-reach marine with a little green stuff for the cloth and headband, nothing fancy like others do around here (but then, he's just a trooper):

Stills Sheet

still some detailing to go (squad number on his left knee, skull on the backpack, more depth on the cloth), but just posting here for design thoughts. Also - basing? i can't pin down what would look best with these colors and general storyline (main inspiration is templars, imperial fists, and real-world history of the crusader knights).

Also, any thoughts on the chapter badge? current one is the iron phoenix badge from 10 years ago split per pale with a red cross, i thinking that the banners might be the design as a larger red cross motif with the top right quarter taken for the iron phoenix badge and the lower left corner for an imperial fist emblem?

That looks fantastic mate. I love the halved chapter badge. It really really works as it is, fits with the fluff nicely amd looks badass to boot

Nice simple, striking colour scheme. Go forth and multiply (the number of painted troops :P )

Yeah, that badge was coming out of an eldar player at that point. How do you think it looks on the model? I think I might take your advice and do mostly crosses, with some men splitting the badge, and some men maybe doing a white cross on grey (to keep the colors). I've always liked the idea of marines having a little personality of their own.

Figured since this is on the 2nd page it was safe to bumpdate:

New chapter/crusade icon, it hasn't changed much at all in terms of how it's painted on the shoulders but it has changed on the larger scale :

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/2259/ironphoenix.png

Much more iron, much more imperial. Still slightly eldar but i think it's what I'm going to get and there's thousands of points with it on them already :o.

Been at work on the first tactical squad, failed to properly estimate how rigid the black reach guys were (they're more or less a toy kit). Most of the additions are shields and feathers from an Empire unit (Halberdiers?) from fantasy that I never put most of together (just painted the captain and the standard, they were kinda fun, but not enough to make an army...). Because these are the toy models all cloth had to be greened, which I'm not very good at (see top row). There's also greened cables/collars on the guys using empire heads (3 in the photos, 4 in the unit) and 2 shoulder pads, a crusader cross on the angry fellow (2nd row) and some bars across the missile trooper. Not sure why a unit would take a rocket and a flamer, but that's what came in the kit. Oh well, i only bought it for da cheep boyz and deffkoptaz:P. There must still be some ork in me because I had some sense of delight demolishing the heads (BR marines have the head sculpted in so swaps mean gouging). Didn't give them all as many cloth parts for the simple reason that it's hard, they're just troopers, and I'm out of green stuff (actually 2 of the guys not pictured have the same setup as the first guy with the 2 arm bits and the full front-back apron).

Seems like a few of the models missed out on my photoshoot, oh well, it's more of the same except there's 10 guys total. In varying stages of painting because I work though drying times (so models with green tend to fall behind, etc) and just generally without a proper workflow (no deadlines either so it's cool). They all start with scab red splash (2:1 paint to water), a splash of black india ink (1:1 ink to water), and then a rubbing (which reveals the lighter gray on the rims - a good base for highlights). There's so much paint on the final models that i hardly worry about chipping but if i run into that that's what matte varnish is for.

Splitting half imperial fist half crusader did not work as well, but i'll leave this one i think and just not do it like that again.

The reward-companion for this unit is logically the BR dreadnought. All the plastic gray and scab red you see is to be replaced with colors, there is a finished gray plate on his left shoulder, and the blood red trim around the face will be gold like the visor (actually, it already is, just not in these photos). Although I was TOTALLY skeptical at first of the plastic and unposable model (me likes things more dynamic), I quickly realized the benefit of this model - plastic. the sarcophagus was removed in 3 minutes (actually it become an addition to the weapon arm) and replaced with an assortment, the 2 sides of an empire drum from the same kit were turned against each other and set in to resemble a sort of pot helm like the early crusaders. The crown element is the back of a crayola magic marker from however long ago and the gaps are all greened in. Greened cables above the head to fill behind the crown and headband to be painted like the first marine (alternating yellow yellow red yellow yellow red). Cloth banner parts are an idea stolen straight out of the daemonhunters codex, one on the right his left is nearly done (needs an imperial fists icon in the lower right) while the one on the left needs the border/hem done like the other. More shields! More greenstuff tassles!

The TL Autocannon is still fairly WIP, with some smoothing out of the amo chain needed and maybe some detailing. I was less concerned with the shape of the gun barrel itself (made from parts of 2 identical pens), feeling that it had enough to resemble an autocannon, but now i have second thoughts. the targeter below the 2 barrels needs integration and some refinement. Need to think of something to use as amo boxes, to be placed on the back and make the thing a little more balanced. I'm so used to orks where you can just saw off and wash any part of anything small and call it part of the gun. Open to suggestions for finishing the modeling on the guns.

Also, any thoughts on the combat hand? the auto's clearly make him a long-ranged dread, but would the missile launcher upgrade become redundant? Also, I'm assuming that the entry in the daemonhunters is the same as the new space marines, which is probably a bad assumption, so i don't actually know his full options in the newest rules.

Edit - sarcophagus nearly complete, can't think of what to paint on the cloth/parchment though. Suggestions?

Iron Phoenix,

I like it. How do you paint the details and such after its already put together? I am new to the painting thing and am going to be asking a lot of painting questions in all the threads I post in.

Generally I avoid painting things unassembled for 3 reasons -

1 - glue is glossy or burns paint and is nearly impossible to apply completely without slips

2 - some things, like green stuff sculpting, demand that at least most of the model be assembled

3 - if you can't reach something with a brush, it's a good indication that it's hard to also reach with the eye, meaning that it can most often stay dark or at least un-detailed.

Made a decision for the cloth, decided to do it as scripture but figured that if the dreadnoughts really slumber for years between most engagements, this one was probably no exception and the parchment has begun to decay (hense the light-grey stippled thinly over). Also put on a marking, not sure about it though, might change it for something a little more rigid (at least kill the angled ends of the bars, that wasn't a good idea).

Got angry at the taberds thinking they looke dumb and ripped off the ones i could (unpainted) and photographed the other 3 :

http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/523/example7.jpg

annoyingly enough I dropped the one on the right and lost his head down a staircase. I'm off to look for it, it looked quite nice and all the other empire heads i have wear flop caps rather than that sweet close-fitting helmet...

New piece - working with terrible direction but oh well, butterfly interest ::

TDA sergeant/small points captain. First extensive greening, some of it came out nice but for the most part it's quite rough, oh well :/.

Those gif's are really a cool way of showing off your minis.

With the exception of the feather guy I really like the look of your minis, they're quite unique and I mean that in a positive way. :D The paintscheme is great, it really has a middle eastern feel to it, overall they remind of crusaders.

The chapter batch is brilliant.

Finished the termy save for some small detailing (skulls, some edges...the weapons)...

I should mention, the grey was chosen to be semi-gloss to give it a more armor-like feel, then it's also rimmed with bleached bone...so there are some environmental lights as well as painted lights on it...

And a clearer shot of the front, although in different (fluorescent crap) lights::

Man, I love these guys. At first I thought the test model looked too busy, but the more I see, the more "right" these guys look. They've got a really awesome medieval feel, which suits Space Marines to a tee.

Would you consider doing a tutorial on the presentation .GIFs? Those are a nice way to showcase a mini.

The turning GIf's are pretty easy, all you need is to take a lot of photos (say, 16+) while rotating the figure on a template (you should still see a few pencil marks near the base) and then compile with a simple GIF editing program such as unfreeze, or my favorite GIF movie gear (which allows cropping, timing adjust, etc).

Been away from the desk a week or two but now i'm cooking up something fun, an honor guard, a chaplain, a few bolter marines and two new sergeants which i'm calling "clerics" and giving skull masks like the chaplains wear (no rules change, just to emphasize the importance of faith in the chapter). The old sergeant will become a statue i think, or be placed in some veteran squad somewhere. Pics soon when i'm with them again.

Decided that I can't quite show what i've got on my desk right now since he's not quite ready, want to get some more fiddling and painting done, but here's a preview of his arms:

http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/6719/hammers.png

cookie for guessing the model he Counts As. Cake for naming the (highly sliced and diced) kit that the hammer bits come from (steel wire makes up the power cables and green makes the actual striking face as well as some gap filling, but the head and body are all from parts of the same kit).

Bumpdate:

Lord Commander Godefroy, current Grandmaster of the Knights (Counts As Lysander).

As the leader of the knights, the elite fighting wing of the Iron Phoenix Space Marine Chapter, he is on equal ground with Master Chaplain Fulcher and Master General Baldwin and second only to Chaptermaster Otho and the emperor himself.

Had a lot of fun sculpting this model, still a thing or two to solve. The halo was fun as was the loincloth (I think it's my first decent greening on a skirt), the shield (which but for the smaller central cross+skull, from the black templars sprue is all card and green) is also something i'm proud of. He still needs the rest of his armor to be etched and there are some regions still more or less unpainted...but he's getting there, about 60-70% done.

http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/1508/godefroy01.jpg

Clerics of the Order (sergeants) with Brother Chaplain Balin.

To ensure the success of the knights in life and in death, they are always lead by the powerhouses, the clerics and chaplains of the most holy order. They are trusted to see that at the end, no battle brother's soul is left vulnerable to Chaos, and as such are well armed and armored so as to be the last of their group standing.

http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/7876/godefroy02.jpg

Most Noble Knights of the Order (Sergeants)

Having a lot of fun with these too, need a champion for sure asap. they need a little bit of de-chaosing in places, i just fell in love with the berserker box when it was released years ago (i think it was one of my first plastic kits). The balls and chains are in the process of becoming large censers and the heads are from Empire flagellates.

http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/7761/godefroy03.jpg

Order Men of Foot (Tacticals)

http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/4264/godefroy04.jpg

fairly big update i think!

These guys might be a bit decked for some tastes, but there are a few reasons behind things. For instance, the 2 relic blades, I think that those have enough of an increase in force that the enemy deserves to see them coming (rather than just putting 2 hands on a power weapon, or worse, just saying 'this power weapon is a relic blade.' The same goes for the master. I also come from a bad moonz klan so...my design sense might still be a little orky. The other is that the Order's idea of resurrection means that they honor the marine's position, not the man himself, believing that with the introduction of the gene-seed each is reborn as his predecessor, so even new recruits bear the honors of a dozen battles on their armor.

I really like your work, but I'm kinda confused on something. You call your chapter the Iron Knights, yet in the thread it self they are called the Iron Phoenix. Now If I rememeber correctly the Iron Knights are a semi-new chapter in the 5th ed SM dex on page 27. Just wondering if it was a typo somewhere... Other then that, your marines look awesome!!

I keep changing the name of the Knights because i can't settle on something, they are a wing of overzealous crusaders within the greater Iron Phoenix Chapter much like the Deathwing. I had a feeling Iron Knights would be taken but Knights of Rebirth and Knights of the Resurrection were both too clunky...:/

I'm looking ideally for something related to Knights or Order, and either iron, phoenix/rebirth, or a reference to their Imperial Fists background.

New try in title post...:/

Small update - bigger things to come - but before I do those, I wanted to test out my power-weapon method. For years i always just highlighted ice blue to skull white in a smooth wet blend, but I decided I didn't want to keep doing that. Thoughts?

Also, first-ever attempt at painted lighting on a miniature. Tried to keep it subtle...?

i like the termie sergeant with the sword but the Chapter master leaves a bit to be desired :P or was he painted earlier before you got better at painting?

Hmm, are you talking about the completed parts like the shield and hammer, or the parts i've yet to paint such as the face, gloves, icons, smaller effects, etc? He's not nearly done by a long shot, but if you think the parts that i've actually completed are lacking, then I'm going to be nervous D:

i really love the conversions you've done, especially the ones concerning the sergeants :D it never occured to me to use khornate heads for my chaplains and/or veterans. i also like your iconography a lot, brings out the character of your chapter. quick question: where does the head of the top right sergeant/most noble knight comes from? empire sprues too? looks wicked :D the gif thing is very interesting! overall, good job sir

looking forward to seeing your work in call of b&c too :)
