Trying to understand GH

I read the FAQ and that makes sense on how many attacks they get when.

What I'm trying to understand is why you would take one setup over another. My basic conclusion is that you do BP/CCW for assault oriented GH given that bolters are useless on the charge. B/CCW for defense oriented GH because you can sit there and bolter everything as it gets closer, and still move your own guys for double tapping while still having an excellent charge reaction the following turn if needed.

Is that about the easiest way to sum it up? Am I missing something?

you've go the point however you forget the importance of mobility and ways of deployment here

for example, when a grey hunter pack droppods it wants to fire as much as possible when coming down. to allow this they prefer the bolter over the boltpistol because it can rapid fire. this is not a defensive tactic

when said grey hunters are mounted in a landraider (and led by ragnar) they are planning to charge the hell out of their opponent, hence they want the charge bonus and so choose the bolt pistol

same with a rhino, but they can't assault out of this one so to maximise the dammage they do when they embark they pick a bolter for it's rapid fire. this too isn't a defensive tactic.

in the end it all comes down to tactics etc so don't link any specific weapon to a specific tactic just think of it like this:

i will charge when i come out and will be within charge range -> boltpistol/CCW

i can't charge when i come down close ->bolter/CCW

i'll be more then 12" from my opponent ->bolter

Both options end up costing about the same anyway, so cost isn't an issue. Because you need Frags on the assaulty ones or the Bolters on the shooty ones with either option adding 1 pt to each squad member. It is all tactics/available models. I like bolters to pod onto objectives and claws to drive in rhinos, but from time to time I use pistols in a pod and assault the turn after shooting two plasma and a melta at a vehicle. No one setup is the one to use all of the time IMHO

Bolters might be useless on the charge... but what about the countercharge?

You get a round of "attacks" where you hit on 3s and wound normally, ignoring 5+ armor. If you assault you get a round of attacks, 20 strong... where your hitting will probly be on 3s and will give armor saves in most cases. So bolters can be useful on assault hunters and add alot of flexability to a force.

But BP+CCW GHs are not made for defense. It can be good to use them as a counter-assault unit if you find yourself against a very CC oriented army- khorne, some orks and nidz. You sit back and shoot at them, and then take the charge on your B+CCWs and then assault with your BP+CCW GHs.
