Howling Griffons True-Scale Movie Marines (PICS)

Hey - so a return to the hobby after somewhere round 4 or 5 years. I had tau but thanks to cool websites like this I wanted to test my painting and modelling skills with Movie Marines!

Thanks to ebay I got 10 termies and 20 marines (just 10 extra  ) to make my models. My colour scheme is somewhat cheeky with the yellow and dark red armour of the Howling Griffons. I think the colours is befitting of over-the-top movie marines (storm trooper philosophy of let the enemy see us coming!).

Colour scheme:

Now for what I want to accomplish:

10 Movie marines constructed of termie legs and chest plate with marine back, arms and head for the sense of scale.

I'm off to buy some greenstuff to get started on my models. I leave you with painted marine (no conversions).

What I want from you guys is C&C on painting hardcore! I'm not perfect but want to get better and that's the first mini in 5 years!

Howling Griffons eh? I googled it and I'd have to say you're correct. I guess I'll reverse the scheme and take that name lol. Still building and testing paint on marines etc. the scout still had flakes of old paint on it and sucked imo.

For washes, could I just water down my scortched brown with water and use that? also would brown be the colour to use lol?

GS: any tips on smoother GS?

thin paint and ink are not the same by a long shot. I suggest not buying a GW ink though, they tend to have poor color and too much luster even watered down. I suggest buying the (oddly cheaper) drawing inks that Higgins produces. While I would generally suggest green or turquoise for reds, your yellows would prefer a red or brown wash. I recommend brushing the model in red and washing it with a turquoise ink. don't worry, inks work differently from paint...the color you see is generally the subtractive mix of the ink and the surface, so while white becomes green, red will not. from there build up your yellow using 2-3 coats thinned with water and made opaque again with the inclusion of some white to avoid the sort of textural buildup you saw on the scout (in fact, you red would do well to be slightly thinned from the beginning, too).

The reason that I didn't give ratios is because it's largely a feel thing, often I just dunk the brush in water, dip it in the paint, and then wipe it gently against the side to remove excess, giving you great color and flow. it's bad for blending but you're looking mostly to cover, so that's how i'd recommend.

On Smoother Green Stuff:

After Green is dry, it can be cut or filed (this can give you a strong manufactured look to your armour).

For smoothing green stuff while it is wet, get some glycerine, put a little bit on your fingers and tools. You will be able to smooth areas far better with the glycerine than with water or dry tools (it also prevents fingerprints to a large extent.

As for ink, Higgins inks are very good. If you want stuff you can get at your LGS, P3 makes some fantastic inks too (their inks have a lot of pigment in them, so you have to thin them down more. On the plus side, that means that your dropper will last longer).

Thanks for the help so far!

Here is a look at my first try at inking:

I got some free used ink from a friend of mine who works at a hobby store, GW gryphonne sepia, badab black and ball red ink. I used the red on the entire yellow side, sepia on the red side and black on seams and corners of the armour.

As for the actual project: Is there anything cheap and preferably in house that i can use to make the collar of the armour? Cheap replacement for plasticard I guess...

Right so I tried sculpting the collar. Took a while but I finally got the proportions correct. Let me know what you think... Arms and backpack are greenstuffed on, and same with the head (which might look better sitting lower in the armour?)

I may have to leave the topic (and army) unfinished. Things came up... PLANE TICKETS!

Termie arms would look better not for the length but for the width... but I only have the Assault on black reach termies - so powerfists, and time is a factor.

Here is as far as I got last night and I hope it will not be the end (for now at least). It seems I forgot to prime some pads. Thanks for the help!

Well...The Termi and normal arms work well. It just the size of the "normal" sm just doesnt look right. At least bulk the shoulder guards out i'd say, cuz I think he would look to thin on top.

Otherwise, this is great, cuz i feel that HG are overlooked a lot.
