Magnetizing the Landspeeder Storm's embarked Scouts

Recommended Posts

So I picked up a couple of the new Storm kits as an outflanking Heavy Flamer that carries a Power Fist and 4 Shotguns is just too cool of a prospect to pass up. When it came time to put the new speeder together, I really didn't want to glue in the embarked Scout squad but I couldn't just leave the Storm empty so magnets were really the only option. It wasn't terribly difficult to do and that might be my problem as the end result is functional but rather ugly. Here are some pics to show what I mean.

The magnets on the right side of the Storm. The magnet on the bench is for my sitting (and yelling at his initiates to get in the damn speeder before they get shot en route to the objective) Scout Sergeant and the one on the running board is for the daredevil Scout hanging from one of the totally awesome anchored grips.

The magnet placing on my Scout Sergeant. I chose to use the back of his leg as the magnet point because it would be the easiest to do and required the least amount of cutting.

The magnet placing on the daredevil scout. The hole in the foot (extends to ankle) is a tad bit deeper then the height of the magnet so as to make room for the magnet on the running board.

The left side of the Storm. There is one magnet mounted in a drilled part of the seat which is for the standing Scout. There is a second magnet on the floor which is for the sitting Scout (guess where the other magnet is going to go).

Same as on the daredevil Scout, the hole in the Scout's foot is slightly deeper then needed to make room for the other magnet.

The easiest (although some cutting is required on the Storm's floor. Cut the narrow solid piece of floor between the two textured plates to create a little cradle for the first magnet) place for the magnet for the siting Scout.

Apologies for the random flashlight but I only had my phone handy as a camera and the lighting was a bit suspect occasionally. As for the incomplete Scout models, I'm waiting on some Shotguns from The Warstore (the Storm kit doesn't come with the advertised weapon options. Bolters only except for the Sergeant (supposed to be the standing one).

So, as you can see, it is all quite functional but the round magnets make for strange and lopsided additions to the Speeder. Sure they are only noticeable while the Scouts are out of the vehicle but I plan on using the unit as a single-turn anti-troop nuke unit so my Scouts will mostly be disembarked. I post all of this for critiques and, in case anyone else has actually gotten around to building and magnetizing their Storm's crew, for people to display better and cleaner ways to do the same job.

I have an entire other squad that goes on the table. The crew of the Storm are stuck in strange positions that only work well when embarked. There is a bit of a continuity error though. GW gives you a pilot, a gunner, and 4 embarked Scouts. It would be easy to say that the gunner is the fifth Scout (he is intended to be. he has a Heavy Bolter bipod accessory on the sprue, suggesting that he lifts the Heavy Bolter off of the Storm and carries it around) but the Storm can still fire its weapon after the Scouts have disembarked.

So the kit is really one Scout short. I may try to throw on a fifth Scout but the question is where will it go? The only place I can see would be sitting on the running board in front of the "daredevil" Scout. Any ideas?

As much as the idea is sound and looks pretty good, I do not understand why your scout sarge has shoulderpads...

Hah! I knew it was only a matter of time until someone mentioned that. I have no fluffy reason for the shoulderpads, I just like having the Sergeants in my Scout Squads really stand out. Fluffy answer could be something like the pads are a unique honor given to the Scout Sergeants who have stayed Scouts to help bring up the initiates. Kinda like, "hey, thanks for doing what you are doing and here is something to help you live longer." The one pictured is the only one with the studded pads, my other Sergeant just has standard Marine pads.

Why not get a Heavy Bolter from a veichle kit and pysicaly mount it to the storm on the side or infront of the gunners seat further down the nose. I know it will look a little over the top when all the scouts are embarked but like you said its still somehow able to fire its weapon when the scout disembarks.

OR you could stick a Heavy Bolter to the inside wall or under a seat in the back, and just say the scout leaves the mounted one behind and grabs the one from the back as he leaves.

yea thats great, I am definitely borrowing this for the storm i just ordered online today... was really wondering how to best represent the scouts being unloaded and this my friend seems like it will work great! And really just a little layer of green stuff on top shouldn't effect the magnets pull and make it look a bit better

Thanks!

No prob! I'm glad that people are finding this helpful. As for the GS, I was thinking about it but I prefer the magnets connecting directly. With the ones I use, any disconnect and the pull is too weak. I'll probably try out the GS if I can find stronger magnets. As for the Sergeant's magnet, would it just be a different position? I suppose that you can hide a magnet in his foot and have it connect on the floor like two of the other ones...

I agree that the magnetizing looks teh awesome good job there. Can anyone tell me if the heavy bolter actually in the scout squad gets to fire as well as the speeders heavy weapon since it's open topped?

If the Storm doesn't move, then the Scout Squad's Heavy Bolter can fire. If the Storm moves, then the Scouts inside of it count as having moved.

Really? Yeah...I'm totally being retro...on purpose. That is exactly what I was doing. ^_^

As for the fifth Scout, I'm going to put up on the running board in front of the "Daredevil" Scout. I'll post pics of that one when it is done.

Also, has anyone else done this? I'm dying to see if anyone has figured out better ways to do the crew.

its a great job, i doubt anyone else can do it better.. a quick question though, do the magnets work if painted?

As for me ill probably do the same, although i fully intend to add another scout on too.

How do you plan to add your fifth Scout?

Update! Got all the bits I needed to finish construction on the Landspeeder Storm.

I swapped out the modded Dreadnought Heavy Flamer for a Landspeeder Heavy Flamer for obvious reasons. I added Shotguns and the appropriate heads to the embarked Scouts so that they now match 1-to-1 my table Scouts. I also added in that pesky fifth Scout. I used the Scout Biker legs and torso, and then the standard Shotgun arm set and Scout head. I was going to position him sitting on the running boards but it looked a little wonky so he is in the main cabin of the speeder, peeking out the side. His position really reminds me of a soldier cautiously peering out of a Helicopter at the land sweeping by. Anyways, here are some more pics.
