Pig of Sparta's WIPs

Right, that was form the recent vacation pictures.. D'OH!

And here's just a general pic that gives a good feel

I need to do something to enhance the shoulders I think, but leave them remaining like scout pads.. I've seen kroot pads used, so I may try hacking them in half to do something, but you get the general idea.

@ georgerox: Thanks, it was seeing all the mark vi parts that actually inspired me in the first place :P.

Greetings Brothers! I've not dropped off the face of the planet, far from it - but I have been a little pre-occupied entertaining my daughter and feeding my son (off topic: it takes him around 2 hours to drink his bottle, which isn't his fault but is draining sometimes. Sorry, back on topic again) In short I'm mostly trying to paint in my lunch hour at work just now, which isn't always conducive to actually getting stuff done. So apologies out of the way I've a load of photos to show off today so I'll just get started :).

First up here's how Bjorn the Fellhanded is looking just now:

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/BjornArmourback.jpg

as you can see there's still a ton of work left to be done, but he's on temporary hold just now while 1) I'm waiting on a bare head option for him and 2) because of these:

Captain Numitor, Ultramarines 8th Company

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/CaptainNumitor1.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/CaptainNumitor2.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/CaptainNumitor3.jpg

(there is nothing more to add to this mini, all it requires is undercoating and painting. the third pic is obviously an alternative angle for the head, but I prefer the first one more)

Captain Agemman, Ultramarines 1st Company

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/CaptainAgemman1.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/CaptainAgemman2.jpg

(this one will have one of the Ultramarines Banner tops on his top armour plate in place of a banner, once I get a hold of one. I've added the shield to the left shoulder so I can put Captain Agemman's personal heraldry there, and stick with the Ultra's 'U' on his right shoulder)

Both are my possible entries for the painting competition that the guys over at Bitz Box are running this month. Trouble is I've only time to paint one and I'm not sure which to go for and I'm unsure whether the mini's fit the 'characters' (who as far as I know have never been shown before), so some opinions would be really appreciated,

cheers

James

Ahh, Lackus Replius again! I hate when this happens :P

Poor pig...

I like the start on Bjorns paint... The Vanguard guy w/ pic looks best with his head at the first angle looking down the sword, but the bloke needs, rather desperately, to have his head sat lower.. You can see the lip/rim of the ball on the bottom of the head, so lowering it might make it more natural, and tbh, my favorite one!

both characters look really nice although i'd have to agree with Tuditanus that the head needs lowering on the JP Cap. Think as commander of the Ultras Assault Co. he probably deserves a PW too if you got one...! ^_^

I'm unsure whether the mini's fit the 'characters'

as to the Agemman, although i really like the mini (in fact, maybe even a bit more than the JP Cap), I thought in fluff terms he was equipped with a special Plasma weapon (like a twin linked plas gun or something?)

very nice stuff anyway!

Lysimachus

Edit: scratch that about Agemman, just realized that was his predecessor, Capt. Invictus, wasn't it? D'Oh!

Thanks for the replies guys:

@ dood515: it's not a chaplain, he's one of the vanguard vets that I dremel-ed the head off of :).

@ Strike Captain Lysimachus and Brother Tuditanus: thanks for spotting that, something wasn't quite right about the head, but I couldn't put my finger on it :). Wasn't Invictus killed fighting Hive Fleet Behemoth at the polar defence silo? I read through IA2 (or was it 3?) the other night but I just can't remember. I thought the named guy one with the plasma weapon was the Captain who became the first 'person' to kill a Carnifex in close combat (with the aid of a Dreadnought)?

@ dreadmad: Thanks Brother. I'm glad they're liked :).

@ sgtNACHO: Thanks Sarge, now thanks to Lysimachus and Tuditanus we know why Numitor's head looks funny...

@ twistinthunder: I know, I know, but they're relatively easy to paint, I've got a few blue shades still mixed, and finding reference for them is really easy.

I've started painting Captain Agemman, I figured I could show off a little more with him, but I will probably get around to painting Numitor at some point.

Just thought I'd add a few photos of how Agemman is coming along. I'm progressing slowly but surely, so I might just make the August 31st deadline :)

I'm afraid the blue looks a little washed out in the first two photos, due in no small part to me rushing to take the pics,

cheers

Thanks for the comments brothers :tu:

@ twistinthunder: the blue really is as dark as it looks in the first photo, I'm actually really happy with how it's turned out and I'm glad it's being well received.

@ Kurasuke: Thanks, I'm glad you like it. It kinda relies on the same principles as my red, smooth application of thin layers to build the final effect, which might be why it reminds you of it.

which leads me nicely to:

@ Mike the Zealous: I'd be more than happy to share the technique, it's fairly easy and in fact you only need 2 paints;

Regal Blue and Ultramarine's Blue.

- Basecoat your chosen mini with a couple of thin layers of Regal Blue.

- Then using a 1:1 mix of Regal Blue and Ultramarines Blue you can start to build the highlights.

- Finally use pure Ultramarines Blue for an even finer highlight.

+You can add another couple of highlights using Space Wolves Grey and Ultramarines Blue in a 1:1 mix then just pure Space Wolves Grey, but I don't feel they really add much to the finished effect.+

hope that helps

@ Terminatorinhell: ah, another convert :D, but initially, due to their starchy-ness they were just so hard to like for me as well it took reading the Uriel Ventris novels to make me like them, and working out this blue to want to paint them :).

@ Ashen-Shugar: Thanks Brother. The White on the tabard is shaded, but the rest is still being worked on, I'll do it last to make sure it's really clean.

Just another quick update on Agemman's progress. Mostly done now, just a few bits and pieces left to do. I might make a start on his head today if I get a chance.

The first thing i said when i saw Agemman was 'wow!' the white contrasts against the blue and really makes the whole model jump out at you, then the metalics just add to the level of detail as well! If you don't place high in the painting comp then its a conspiracy!

Hope you'r keeping well buddy,

John

@ son of nocturne: Thanks, I'm keeping pretty well. Walking a bit of tightrope just now as having two young kids isn't exactly conducive to getting painting done :P, but I'm getting by. Hope you're doing good too. I've had a brief look at your Fists, when I have some more time I'll have a proper look and post some comments.

@ Deffwolf: Cheers brother, more projects are lining up as I type.

Quick update, Agemman is now finished, so I just need to base huim and I'm totally done. Here's some pics of the finished mini:

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/CAFinished2.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/CAFinished3.jpg

Now a question for everyone, Does this base look ok? (obviously it needs painting, I'm just not sure if he looks good on it or not)

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/CAFinishedBase.jpg

(apologies for the poor photo quality, I was a bit rushed in taking it)

any other C&C welcomed,

James
