Insult on Black Reach

Recommended Posts

So, after collecting two sets of AOBR marines, adding a few vehicles, etc., and then promptly putting the entire lot on dust gathering duty for the better part of a year, I decided it was time to do something with them. Thus began a grueling process of meditation and prayer to the Emperor for a vision, a direction, an idea... ... ... nothing.

Then, I began to hear a quiet voice. It started out with seemingly harmless suggestions (Remember those Battlefleet Gothic Chaos Ships? Maybe it's time to get them back out and work on them...) Then slightly more pointed ones. (Maybe you should look into choosing a chaos god for them - It would give you a chance to sculpt some green stuff...) Then, it manifested. (Forget about those other gods. Wouldn't it be great to sculpt a bunch of pustules and rot all over these ships? You know you want to!... ..... ..... ......See? Wasn't that fun?)

But it wasn't until then that the full scope of his devious plan was made clear - this was the lynchpin in his designs to sway more of the Emperor's most loyal followers to his service! I found my mind inevitably drawn back to the AOBR collection without a personality, and my sculpting tools inexplicably in my hand...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since I was starting with standard Marine models and not Chaos models, I figured the army will represent a space marine force recently lost in the warp and converted (in the loyalty sense, not the sculpting sense!) to Nurgle, so they still bear strong resemblance in their wargear to their progenitors.

So, I had a few design parameters in mind for this project. The first, and most important, I wanted these guys to clearly be recognizable as 'not space marines', and yet still be recognizable as 'once having been marines'. (I really don't want people to be looking at them saying "What's that stuff on your marines?") This means the conversion work cannot be subtle.

Second - I need to get rid of all Imperial imagery and insignias on them, though skulls can stay.

Third - Wargear needs to be representative. This is not too much of an issue, the biggest one being storm bolters representing twin-linked bolters.

Fourth and final, I wanted the use of specifically chaos models and bitz to be very limited, for two reasons - the first is the very real-world consideration of not wanting to spend a ridiculous amount of money converting them. The second is that a few converted Space Marines in the middle of an essentially standard Chaos army would not carry the vision as well. I will probably add some spikes and such here and there in the force for effect, and I think I will probably use the standard Demon Prince model (Though now I am thinking about the Inquisitor scale Space Marine... Hmmm......), but otherwise, I want to entire force to fit the theme and be recognizable as a recent convert from something recognizable.

So, now that I have finished my novel, here are pics of the first test model!

Thanks for the comments!

I am planning to do the Black Reach conversions, and I have a tournament coming up in mid-September that I need to get ready for... It is going to be a stretch to get them done and painted, but I am going to see if I can do it!

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, it has been a while, and I have made a bit of progress on my army. I am preparing this army for a tournament at a nearby gaming store, so I am beginning with a 1250 point list that will be used for the event. It calls for the following:

1 Winged Daemon Prince, 3 Terminators w/ combi Meltas, 21 Plague Marines with assorted weapons, 3 Rhinos and 2 Vindicators. I currently have all of the models assembled, and am working through the process of converting them.

The Daemon Prince is finished (stock with the exception of Zombie dragon Wings and some green stuff around the joins) and the Terminators and 12 Plague Marines are sculpted. This leaves 9 Plague Marines and the vehicles to be sculpted, then it is on to the vehicles!

Enough talk, bring on the pics!

Terminators first...

Then a few shots of various Plague Marines...

As I am working through the process, I am starting to try to mirror some of the functional details of the Space Marine armor in the forms of the growths.

I really dig what you've got going on here; I like your vision and the GS work is looking great <_<

Pretty sure I haven't seen any mention of possible colour schemes or faction loyalties yet... I was bored and dug through the Lexicanum and found some less commonly represented Nurgle renegade forces, if you were interested in going with something official; the Betrayers of Pain, the Lords of Decay, The Purge, The Cleaved and the Dark Tusks. None are pictured with the amount of mutation and general "side effects" of Warp exposure you've been modeling so far, but I can't see that mattering. The Dark Tusks aren't even pictured at all, which might be perfect for you if you don't mind black armour.

Just some food for thought anyway, looking forward to seeing where you go with this regardless :)

Thanks for the feedback and the ideas, Draakur!

I will probably go with a fairly standard sickly green armor with the growths in browns, pinks and orange-to-yellows, probably something along the lines of the Betrayers of Pain link... I have started a test model for painting, but it isn't ready for photos yet! Once I am done with the conversion process, I will start painting my way through the army!

@ JamesI - You will, and I will! <_<

  • 5 months later...

So, it occurred to me that I had managed to convert 1250 points of this army, finish painting what I had done, play it in two different tournaments, (not to mention starting a Tau army in the meantime!), all without taking any more in-progress photos. I recently started assembling more pieces for the army, (three new Plague Marine squads, two Landraiders, two squads of Raptors) and I figured I would take a few moments to show the end result of the work I have done since the last pics I posted.

Really awesome sculpting, I'm definitely going to take some inspiration for my own Nurgle GS work I'm starting soon. I particularly like the gas masks.

I can't say I'm too fond of the colour scheme but the painting itself is good. Nice work.

These are fantastic!

I saw a guy at my local store do a conversion job on all of his AoBR marines... however, his was born from a mishearing of the name of the campaign when it was first told to him... "Assault on Black Beach"... Yes, he had squad after squad of power armoured, bolter toting guys with their boots off, taking a paddle, surrounded by sand castles, star fish and such. Brilliant job there and an even better job here.

I wish I had this level of skill with the GS...
