Got to watch a SW Planet Strike Game today.

So I gave blood and hung out at the mall afterwards so I didnt puke in my car.

I got to watch a Plaent Strike game today between Space Wolves and Codex Marines. It was just shy of 2500 points per side.

SW's were the attacker.

Long story short, the Wolf Lord controlling the army was a seasoned vet. and he could not take any of the bastions or strong points. He got wiped from the table.

He had lots of good choices, used all the table edges he could for whatever reason, but I tell you, the lack of hardcore heavy weapon punch in troop choices I think is what did him in.

Ive gamed against him before with his wolves and he is usually a good general, but with Planet Strike, I personally think we have some issues despite the strategems and extra FOC choices.

Aside from tanks and some Long Fangs, Dreads, and a few other things, there is nothing to really thin out the Defending player's heard.

Assaulting Troops get riddled down hard before reaching objectives.

On the other hand, he has said the same thing about being the Defender in respect to the SW's. I guess we have to be very very very defensive and not get lured or suckered into leaving the objectives or getting bogged down in drawn out HTH.

And aside fromt he Strongpoint/Bastion issued or purchased Las Canons or Heavy Bolters, same thing still pops up. The lack of long range fire power.

Anyone played yet and fare well?

The general rule for attacking a defensive position is to have a minimum 3 to 1 advantage in numbers (4 or better to 1 is preferred) as the defenders have all the cover and advantages (IRL but it holds true in gaming too). An even-ish 2500 points per side is set up in favor of the defenders from the get go, he never really had any chance from the onset.

*blinks* So... did he have an Ironclad dreadnaught? Did he use any DPs? How about some MM attack bikes? Vendread?

Seriously... I havent had a problem popping AV 14 yet- its just an immobile landraider at the end of the day.

But heres a Dirty Trick that might help- Take DPs. It might seem redundant, but itll save your bacon by giving you cover and the fact that you can gaurantee a large swath of your army is on the table from turn 1. The occaisional stormbolter shot is helpful, and the ability block your enemies movment routes is important.

Buy Frag Grenades for all your GH packs- nothing sucks like knowing you have to assault into cover, and knowing you forgot these.

Take the assaulters tactic that gives you D3 sets of Grenades for your troops... and throw meltabombs on your big squads. 16 Meltabomb attacks that hit automatically should be able to get atleast one explodes result dont you think?

Small Squads of BCs and WSs are useful for attaching Meltabombs too BTW.

And lastly... those D3 meltabombs are incredibly good on say an 8 strong BCJP squad- you might lose two of them as they come in, you might not- but the rest will frag the hell out of that bastion.

Hrmm... I need to go visit the OR forum for a minute, Ill be back.

another trick i am going to use is combi-meltas on ALL of my pack leaders..i am planning on melta gun spamming the living crap out of the bastions...

one question i was wondering about: can i give a unit of terminators one of the D3 grenades?

WLK

Well first I gotta say two things, first don't play Planetstrike below 3000 points, like Apocalypse it's really better when the forces are both large enough to sort of even out with the number of tricks they have up their sleeves and there's enough units so that it's not so easy for one player to get blown out too early.

Secondly take allies. Again like Apocalypse, Planetstrike is something that really should include more than two players and more than two armies per side, multiple armies adds teamwork elements and brings tactics and capabilities into play that a single specialised army couldn't manage. I've played a few games of Planestrike including one during the release event that was about 90,000 points conservatively and that was crazy but fun. On a smaller scale the strategems and other factors don't even out so well and are a bit too mis matched giving one side a significant advantage over the other more often than not.

Grey Hunters with Meltaguns, Ironclads with Heavy Flamers and Meltaguns, Dreadnoughts in general and a fair number of Bloodclaws with Melta bombs and power fists.

As long as each unit contains several weapons capable of cracking AV 14, you should be fine. But you will need to rewrite your list to do it.

Hi Vash! Long time no see.

Yea, I've been pretty busy, the aforementioned Planetstrike game was the first I've played in months but I'm starting to get some more free time on my hands to browse the forum, play some games and get back to some much neglected projects.

why not just bloodclaws with meltabombs, you could easily spam them to kill the bastions?

landraiders would be best to transport them as they can then assault from the tank, but rhinos and DP would also work

then you can arm wolf scouts with meltabombs too, either, infiltrate, OBEL or LS storm them

that would work wouldn't it?

Easy alternative- take scorched skies if possible. Barrage and 2D6 blasts +objectives rather than D6 as far as I remember is good for Wolves thinning out, even on average rolls. DPs= good too.

WG with TDA and TH/SS also make a strong unit, mainly because they are tough as nails.
