And a Barrel of Ale
Hey guys, I have been around on the forums for afew months getting tips and stuff while I build and paint my space wolf army. Today was the 1st time i have actually ever played 40k and by god it was fun ;P I arrived in store after work with my fully painted army and everyone there was shocked to find a new player with a fully painted army. I asked around and got a pickup game with a very experienced friendly IG player that showed me the ropes really. But he certainly didn't hold any punches, which was good in the end. WE rolled a spearhead deployment for a capture and control game. I won the role to go 1st & setup my 1500 point army of : HQ WGBL Frostblade, SS, frags, WTN Runepriest Frostblade, COS, Runic Charm, Bolt Pistol and frags Troops 15 Blood Claws 3 Power fists and flamer (in the landraider with RP) 9 greyhunters 7x TG, Metlagun & Plazma pistol (in a rhino with the WGBL) 8 grey Hunters 7x TG & Plazma gun Elites 4 wolfscouts with 2x Plazma pistol, Metlagun & shotgun Fast Attack, 2x MM Attack Bikes Heavy Support Whirlwind Vindicator EE & dozer Land Raider Crusader EE & MM and he sets up his mainly infantry based guard army. he rolls and steals the initiative and then my game goes to hell. in his 1st turn he explodes every single 1 of my vehicles ..... and im thinking that Russ and the Emperor has abandoned me or something. i proceed to take afew wounds on my grey hunters and blood claws that were in the transports and a few more from other shooting. and then its my turn.... I'm still in my deployment zone and thinking how the hell I'm going pull something off.... to pull this epic round of shooting he had a whole unch of stormtroopers with metlaguns shooting from beyond 6" (and lazcannons, Leeman Russ Tank and Auto cannons @ range) so i marched my bloodclaws up and proceeded to flame, pistol and wipe every squad i shot and assaulted off the board. otherwise apart from that i missed every attack with my WGBL even with a WTN..... dice gods hate me, and i had my 8man grey hunter squad sitting on my objective behind a small house out of LOS of pretty much everything(that saved my bacon in the end). He couldn't believe how good my blood claws were and how they just stomped up the field killing everything in their path. while the 9man grey hunters and WGBL tried to tie up as much shoosty as possible before their inevitable deaths. and the attack bikes took out his sentinels and Tank. At the end of turn 5 i had 6 blood claws and my RP left contesting his objective, and my valiant 8man squad of grey hunters hiding out of LOS from the epic shooty of his army. but unfortunately we rolled and played turn 6, and then 7 and in those turns my RP and blood claws were valiantly cut-down reaping their vengeance on the guard. meanwhile he had forgotten about my squad of hapy little grey hunters that had managed to kill some stormtroopers and then run back behind the LOS of my building and onto my objective to draw the game for me. thank Russ for capture and control game type! I have to thank the guy i versed, he was a real champ about everything constantly helping me out along the way which i sorely needed. but after that i managed to squeeze in another 1k game before it was time to go. but this time it was serious, Belial( is that how he is spelt? i dont really need to know he is just another dark angel) and his death wing Terminators. I ran with a Vindicator, my trusty Bloodclaws and RP, and my loveable 8x grey hunter squad and my 9x grey hunters and WGBL. i went 1st and sat around doing nothing for the 1st turn as you do vs Death wing Assault. in the 2nd turn he deep struck Belial and a squad of dual LC termy's into infromy of my WGBL and 9x grey hunters and a 5man termy squad with strombolters & fists and an AC inbetween my bloodcalws and 8man greyhunter squad. he shot his AC @ my vindi and stunned it (damn it i wanted to pie plate his Belial and friends) and thats it for his turn. in turn 2 i rapid-fire my 8man grey hunter squad into the 5man SB&fist termy's aswell as pistol and flamer from the blood claws, and then i rapid-fire my 9x greyhunter squad with WGBL into Belial's gang. i bring down 3 terminators, 2 in the regular squad and 1 in Belial's each squad before we even get into close combat, and the guy i was vsing took away his terminator Sargent with the power sword so it was free pickings for me in CC. and the rest of that 5man termy squad was dead before i even got to my power fists on the blood claws *woooo* and i end my turn next turn he calls for his last termy squad and fails, meanwhile belial slaughters my 9man greyhunter squad with the WGBL, but not after the WGBL takes down a termy. and this leaves Belial and his 3 buddies left on the board. its my turn next and i proceed to drop a pie plate on him from the vindicator ..... but it scatters 6" * face palm* and my bloodbaths are too far away to assault him so i make sure im in a good position to do so next turn while my remaining grey hunter squad shoots him doing nothing. next turn he brings in his last terminator squad and its a carbon copy of the 1st squad i dispatched. and he scatters them within 8" of my blood claws, oooo unlucky ;P he shoots my vindi with the AC and wreaks it (lame) and moves belial closer to my grey hunters and blood claws. Next its my go and i keep kiteing Beliel with my grey hunters ( @ this stage my blood claws are still awhile away and he wont get near me @least this turn) cause i don't wanna get into CC with him with my grey hunters. then i proceed to move and pistol and flame the other termy squad killing 1, and assault it wiping out the unit, while only losing 1 blood claw(apparently death wing cant hit for nuts) next turn he tries and makes a mad dash for my grey hunters and due to my oversight he caught me and killed all bar 4 grey hunters, that ran 6" i then proceeded to rapid fire those grey hunters doing nothing and charging my blood claws into Belial and his buddies wiping out the unit and only taking 3 losses. overall i had a GREAT night, and LOVED smashing the Dark Angels and pulling the rug from under my friendly IG player was awesome aswell. i cant wait to get back out there and ring back some more trophies to the Fang *Howls* Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/174223-bloodclaws-first-real-fight/ Share on other sites
Wolf Guard Nostromo
Glad to see you enjoyed it, and good that you had what sounded like some decent guys to play with. My first real game of 40k was with my two squads of tactical marines, painted as blood angels, from the 2nd edition box set and a captain which one of my friends lent me. I played an ork player who had about twice as many points worth, and needless to say, I didn't win, but I did get hooked and am still here! A good start to your saga. Make sure your Rune Priest remembers and recounts these battles! As a helpful side tip on the basis of your victory, Dark Angel's robes are useful for wiping food and ale from your beard with  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/174223-bloodclaws-first-real-fight/#findComment-2059563 Share on other sites

Wolf Guard Hengist
Taking that many losses in the first turn is just plain old bad luck my brother. I had a game last night against the IG and managed to wither a full turn of shooting with only losing a stormbolter on a Rhino. I'm glad you enjoyed your first game and hope you have many more to come! Thorgrim Blackwolf
Well done on the results you acheived in your first games. The key thing is you enjoyed them and had decent opponents which hopefully will get you hooked on the hobby. Be sure to keep us informed of your sagas and achievments! And a Barrel of Ale
oh yea i did do all my counter attacks i wouldn't have got my blood claws up onto the IG's objective without it. and tried not to forget too many shooting/movement turns ;P and yea... after getting all my vehicles exploded in the 1st turn i thought there was nothing i could do... im very surprised @ how the game went from there. I massacred every squad i charged/counter charged with my blood claws and managed to get 5" or better consolidation moves every time which certainly helped jumping between cover to avoid getting shot into a million tiny little pieces. 1 of the best moments in the game for me was when the IG's Battle cannon on his Leeman Russ tank, scattered back into a full squad of stormtroopers with a flamer and killed them all except 2, then they took a moral test and ran it was awesome. but by far smashing the Dark Angels was the highlight of the evening, Belials dress will make a very good set of rags to mop the toilets with. @ The God Emperor, im bringing the wolves to bear against the enemies of the fang up in sunny Brisbane @ Grey Mage, i actually have even more than that hehehe, i picked up a black reach box to get the rulebook and so on, so with that i still have 10 terminators, 5 of them are the old school metal models(as well as WP in terminator armour) the 10 tac marines which im going to have to model extensively, a squad of blood claw bikers and a WP on a bike to go with them, and the dreadnaught which im going to get replacement arms for( for when i screw up) and try my hand at some more serious modelling to get our venerable brother crushing an one of the orks from the black reach set ork in his hand or under his heel. jamisu
I just played my first two games as well. Since my friends and I just started, we were only playing 700pt games. Round 1 was against Eldar, and round 2 was against Witch Hunters - I won them both. I'm at work right now, so I'll try to remember my list as best I can. HQ ------------- Rune Priest - Bolter, Frost Blade (other stuff I can't remember) Troops ------------- Blood Claws (x10) - 1 Leader (can't remember the official name), 2 Power Fists Grey Hunters (x10) - Standard loadout from what I can remember Elite ------------- Dread - Storm Bolter, Twin-Linked Heavy Bolter Dread - Multi-Melta, Rocket Launcher The Eldar put up a decent fight, only because he had a squad of Striking Scorpions. The Witch Hunters was barely a fight, but the Seraphims with their flamers was pretty brutal. And a Barrel of Ale
hehe thanks, and @ Grey Mage, i want to be able to field something different occasionally, ie throw in more bikers or more foot sluggers and not just play the same list, and while i have the painting bug ill try my hardest to get as much stuff done. but now i just have to figure out how to model away the missile launcher config on the last black reach dude, and how to get my dread to stomp on some orks from the black reach set. jamisu
@Warhorse47 Thanks man, I can't wait for October to buy some new stuff. Now that I have at least a basic understanding of the rules and how my units work, I can't wait to expand to 1000 points. I'm gonna make a thread over in the army list section to try and get some pointers from the pros. Lord Noble
I used this list tonight (last night now) for a 1500 point game (first time using Wolves, Yaaay!), but I had to make some adjustments since my #'s didn't match up with what you had. I dropped the whirlwind since that put me over 1500. Changed WGBL to Wolf Lord since I thought you HAD to take a WL. No idea where this came from, but there you have it. Gave WL Runic Armor since I was expecting evil IG stuff thrown my way and wanted a slightly better save. Took another scout w/ Bolter. The outcome? Total massacre. I ended up playing spearhead deployment w/ 5 objectives against a Mech Ork Army that trashed my rhino and LRC first turn w/ Deff Rollas. 2nd turn scout OBEL in and get creamed by a Deff Dred. Needless to say, ti went poorly for me. But, I LOVE the Blood Claws in a Landraider thing. Evilness in a can. I killed 3 Uber-Ork-Termy-Wannabes on first turn out of the LRC, destroyed 2 Battle wagons and messed up a Big Mek. I'm going to runa similar list again to see if it was just bad luck this time around. Thanks! -J Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/174223-bloodclaws-first-real-fight/#findComment-2077186 Share on other sites
