Fun Inq Lists/Units

Just wanted to throw up a new topic to discuss entertaining units to field in an Ordos army. I don't care at all about effectiveness. This not only means that the units don't have to be effective to be fun; it also means they don't have to be ineffective to be fun. For example, I personally think that daemonhosts are fun, despite being ineffective, but I also think that exorcists are fun, despite being excellent units power-wise. Furthermore, I'd like to hear why you think those units are fun, or what fun tactics you can employ with them.

In addition to fun units, I'm also interested in fun armies. This could be something specific, like a radical DH/WH list you've developed, or something more vague, like the idea of using as many units with random abilities as possible. Again, why are these armies fun, and what fun things can you do with them?

I love ISTs, even if they aren't the best infantry in the game. Use an Inquisitor Lord for your HQ, backing up three or four full squads of footslogging ISTs (far from the most effective use of them, I know). Keep GKs for your reserve when it becomes necessar to drop the hammer on somebody (a GK HQ and some FA squads), and a couple of dreads for long range fire support.

For the ISTs, I really enjoy using grenade launchers and plasma. The plasma squads form a sort of gun line, while the grenadiers are the mobile force. The IL and retinue give the gunline some extra oomph with heavy bolters, a plasma cannon, and a psycannon.

I also love null rods for some reason; they just seem like a fun piece of wargear.

The look of the army appeals to me, with all the carapace-armored soldiers (I really like both the classic ST models and the Kasrkin, though my army is all the latter and none of the former). Carapace just looks good, better than any power armor except the GKT armor, which is the best sculpt in the game (regular termies look stupid to me, especially the helmets).

i'm all over this haha. my 'dream' army is so wrong but whatever, mixed WH inquisition with some chaos bits thrown in the mix :eek hoping my basement gaming group is cool with using gear and possibly psychic powers from the chaos codex for a few specific minis hehehe.

it all started with penitent engines. they're the mini that got me started, there's just something about it made me say 'yeah'. it didn't take long to recognize how random (and chaotic) these units were, but as long as you don't deploy single PEs you stand a good chance of tearing something up. i'm also a big fan of the arco flagellants which also rely heavily on a random element for their effectiveness. same with the exorcists, vindicare assassin, and orbital bombardment.

ultimately the army relies heavily on the random element and is lead by an inquisitor lord who believes he can use the word of the emperor to bend the will of chaos (literally). i converted the mini to carry a scroll and the staff from a chaos terminator lord.

the quickie version of the list is

HQ - inq lord with CC retinue - crusaders and acolytes w. mancatchers rounded out with supporting units in a LR (chaos model)

flying nun of doom style canoness

TROOPS - 4 small stormtrooper squads 5-6 strong - one squad of each type of special weapon (in pairs), attached priest to 1 squad

14-ish battle sister squad, flamer, heavey flamer.

ELITES - half dozen arco flagellants

vindicare assassin

inquisitor (combi melta and chainfist? haha) - firebase retinue - acolytes w. storm bolters, 2 HBs, 1 plasma canon

FAST - dominion squad - double melta, double storm bolter, banner bearer, vet with combi flamer riding in an immolator

HEAVY exorcist

orbital bombardment

3 penitent engines

the basic plan is to overwhelm the opponent with sheer WT:F :D

I go with a giant hodgepodge of stuff that looks neat. ISTs, Sisters, GKT, close combat Inq with Land Raider, DCAs. I'm going to branch out with inducted IG and want to add some Arco-flagellants. For me, it's about what models spark me as 'neat.'

I love my DCAs. I love Seraphim especially, the other Sisters units are okay. I like my GKTs, and love my Inquisitorial Storm Troopers. Really though, I love my Inquisitor, so much that I'm going to add another Inquisitor or two to my collection and do conversions for the retinue. They're fun, flavorful, and should have lots of options for modeling.

My old traditional list is the one I still love best for "fun factor", "fluff factor" (my own personal fluff for the army, that is), and "kewl-lookin' on the table" factor.

GKTs

A bunch of PAGKs marching around

A couple of GK dreads

Seraphim

An Inquisitor giving orders from the security of his retinue firebase

An Eversor or Callidus assassin messing with the enemy

I still play this exact list from time to time -- it's the very 1st 40K army build I put together, played, and painted -- but its best "competitive" days are long gone.

Its not the lists for me, but the tactics. I, from time to time, find myself playing in line with GK fluff, and so my PAGKs thin/tie-up/push-through the enemy grunts in a cheveron, with the terminators going to take on the major threats up the middle... sometimes even in C&C missions (when i think i can table the opponent or almost to that point).

Well i would love 5 units of GKT's one with sturn (although i h8 him) and one with a BC or GM.

Because as wrath pointed out GKT's look awseome

Carapace just looks good, better than any power armor except the GKT armor, which is the best sculpt in the game (regular termies look stupid to me, especially the helmets).

Totally agree and i think i am putting the above in my siggy now :)

In addition to my Sisters and inducted Guard, I'm making an Inquisition Apoc force with a Doomhammer superheavy transport. I have the Inquisitor Lady figure with the plasma pistol and I'm getting the parts for a middle ages looking retinue. WFB Empire and Brettonian players with extra bitz are good to know!

I keep going over the Inq henchmen rules; so far I'm thinking of three Acolytes in power armor ( hey, they can spend points on wargear, why not ? ), three Warriors ( one a gun servitor plasma cannon ), a Sage ( gotta love all those scrolls ), a Chirurgeon ( mostly to do medieval surgical equipment ), and naturally a Penitent ( the Empire Flagellant with his wrists in the stocks, of course). Add in the Inquisitrix and some Inq stormies and I've got a woefully overpriced unit, but it will look cool.

I'm going over the possibilities for non-Marine, non-Sister power armor. I'm leaning toward WFB armored troops, I think for modesty the female Acolytes would wear skirts. The trick is modelling obvious though nontraditional power armor, I've got some ideas and I'll see how they work.

  • 2 weeks later...

Neither list is the least bit competitive. When they work, they work. When they don't, I'm not surprised.

Version I:

A hammer falls - Inquisitor leads Stormtroopers to investigation, calls in Terminators at need. Orbital bombardment for flavour.

Nothing but Terminators and Stormtroopers in Chimeras. Kasrkin are preferred for the Wolf-Brigade image (high-gloss black, orange-red lenses), though classic Stormtroopers will do in urban camouflage or deep blue riot squad/anti-terrorist uniform. Don't have any classic Stormtroopers yet. Chimeras wear some heavy conversion - engine blocks reduced, turret swapped for Predator turret, extended passenger compartment.

One close combat Inquisitor Lord with reasonable, not bank-breaking gear. Three acolytes converted from different Warmachine and Iron Kingdoms minis, two men and one woman. I'll explain why I bothered later. Fairly standard fist-servitors, though I'll probably exchange these for Guard veterans with powerfists stolen from more Warmachine minis.

Still looking to do a lighter variant of this list with Death Cultists instead of Terminators.

Version II:

Inquisitor's strike force, after the three acolytes in his retinue achieved proper rank. No Grey Knights at all.

Again Stormtroopers in Chimeras. Two inducted Armoured Fists (now ordinary platoons without transports, with heavy weapons squads instead). Guard are painted in gloss black armour over grey urban camo - like Wolf Brigade Lite. Lascannon Sentinels and a Hellhound on the side.

The three acolytes are fielded as Inquisitors this time, with their own acolytes. Each Inquisitor has different gear - I have two of each character, one is for the Version I list and is armed with acolyte gear and the other is for this list and is armed with better Inquisitor gear. The acolytes of these three are plain and identical this time, though still Warmachine minis.
