Pre-Heresy Wolf Scout, MK I

Recommended Posts

Well, here's the first test run of a Wolf Scout, I have 2 ready (including this one) but so far this was by far the easiest and best looking, in my humble opinion. I am really looking for your full opinion here brothers, no matter how harsh! This is all a kit bash though, absolutely no sculpting. This guy will be part of an army I do paired with some 1k Sons (GK) and Russ for a Prospero siege/razing timeline army.

The only problems are when fitted on the shoulders, the marauder arms tend to fill out almost to the edge, this is noticeable on the bolt pistol of the one below. I tried a GS shell to bulk them, up, but to little avail I think. I have seen other conversions use Kroot Shoulder pads, and have 12x pairs coming in a trade, so I was wondering if this would work out? Maybe cut them in half and try adding them here?

If there is enough interest, I will try and finish up the MK II to give you guys something further to critique.

Thank you for your assistance, brothers!

Well, first off, post some WIP pics BEFORE you base it, as an all black model is impossible to pick out details on.

From what I see, the model is finding it's basis in the ol chaos warrior body type for the most part. While this is a great basis for making some pre-heresy PA wolves (see some of beef's old models, for example), I personally find it too bulky and armored to be a wolf scout. You have to remember that scout armor is minimal at best. While you have the bare arms, the lower body may still be too armored to pull off a true scout look (how would you sneak up on anyone in plate armor? :D )

And while I do like the bare arms, I have to say the bolt pistol looks a bit akward and unnatural in it's positioning.

Please dont take this criticism too hard. I do love the idea and you have a lot of things right. These are just the points that I personally would focus on.

No offense taken.. I took the approach of, they are Fenrisian warriors, so akin to Norseman, who could be quiiiiite sneaky in chain and mail. Plus, Carapace armor was defined as anything from flak weave to medieval plate.... The bolt pistol was hard as hell to get right, i'll admit. I think if I pop off this arm and file off the shoulder knubs on the cloak, I may have more success, though that still leaves me at a loss for pauldrons...

I may use this bloke, with some modification, for their Wolf Guard. I want to emphasize the fact that Wolf Scouts are just Marines that have doffed the PA for some carapace. Though that leaves me with my other version for Wolf Scouts, and that involves hacking PA legs at the knees, attaching marauder upper legs, and then gs gap filling/covering a PA torso on top, with the arms and such as used here, woudl resemble this:

This one I have a prototype for, but am struggling with to get everything right... Though looking over the tutorial again, I think I can improve.. I will try this one again, if it's not too power armored like, and if the finished product is liked better, this will be the scouts... I do like the relative ease with which this one was done, though I won't be using it for general, I kinda liked it to go with the scouts... Are bare arms too much a sin on a PA figure???

Hmmmmm....all I have to say is a little greenstuff will go a LONG way. You have a really solid idea going (tho I would like to know how even will oiled mail and plate could be more silent than leather :Troops: ), but the models could just use a little smoothing out at the joints. I dont consider myself by any means a pro with the ol putty, but I still bust out just enough to make it a nice, seamless connection where I want to slap some joints together.

I rather enjoy that guy with the PP. Well done... I can see what you were talking about the other evening.

Your green-stuffing that right leg correct? Id like to see this done before you primer it... be cool to see the finished mods.

The pic with the plasma pistol is from Prophet Miniatures, and is what i'm basing the design off of, just to clarify.

And, OID, plate can be very quite... I became very well adept at sneaking in it. Riveted mail especially seems to creak less.

But still... Realism does usually meet it's demise w/ 40k. We are talking about 8 feet tall super humans who don't die of age and can spit acid! So, why not sneak in full plate? MArines can infiltrate, after all!

Sorry for a double post, but here is my first take on the Prophet Miniatures style Wolf Scout, pending Kroot or some other form of shoulder pads.

And I know detail is rough (hopefully will be painting soon) but here is their now Wolf Guard leader too... I may swap the chain-axe for some form of power weapon, or make him a thunder hammer? Not sure what to give him (his pelt should be obviously on his shoulders, but the bits for the tail charm and more are forthcoming).

And, the CCW for the remaining scouts... I kit-bashed the double headed axe, because what self-respecting barbarian wouldn't own at least one?
