Chosen at last

Recommended Posts

I thought I would take this chance to introduce myself to you all, as I only have a short while before my trials begin.

I have been playing Warhammer fantasy battles since I was thirteen, funny that Fantasy would be my first game as my friends and I were absolutely enraptured by an old GW 40k catalog(Space Wolves in-particular for me).

As most of you can probably relate however this is a pretty expensive hobby. The fact our local games store was going under and had an amazing clearout on fantasy, essentially dictated our choice. I loved that game(and still do) but part of me always regretted not playing those great space soldiers (funny really considering thier bolter held up against the chest uniformity).

Around the time 3rd edition came out I thought "This will be my chance to make that Space wolves army I have always dreamed of" Sadly our gaming group never really took to the new incarnation of 40k and my dream army never really got beyond a handful of the marines that came in the starter box for 3rd.

About a year ago we went thru one of those lulls you get when you war the same people over and over for too long. In one last gasp effort to realize my childhood desire to command the sons of Russ I convinced the guys to give 2nd edition a try.

I tracked down the rulebook and wargear book. All the templates, datafaxes, wargear cards and the psyker expansion but still the Wolves codex eluded me. In the time since then I have been playing Orks which while fun(and insanely random sometimes) just wasn't what I had in mind. Today however I finally tracked that damn codex down on Ebay and promptly ordered a slew of boxed sets and bitz.

Funny that after fourteen years I will finally be able to slay my childhood friends armies with many of those same models we salivated over when we should have been doing schoolwork.

I must go now brothers, this Demon of the sky seems to be slowing it's pace now as we draw closer to the greatest mass of land I have ever seen.

Wish me luck!

Welcome to the Fang, Read the SW rules, and the B&C rules

And have fun ;)

O and that daex, cool you got it, in 3 months its just a book for fluff ;)

As we only play 2nd edition right now, it's a bit more useful for me :D

Thanks for the warm welcome brothers, The level of painting and modeling you guys have put into your Wolves is inspiring to say the least!!

Once I start work on mine I'll post them up here.

We need to start a HI I AM JOINING THE BAND WAGON thread just for the new guys.... :)

No bandwagon for me friend :) We only play the old vehicles moving out of control, hallucinogen effects, frag grenades actually fragmenting ruleset.

I could see why you would feel that way judging by the main page though

Im jealous... Ive never been able to lay hands on a 2nd ed wolf codex, and the local guys only seem to remember the downsides of 2nd ed. *sighs* I sadly played eldar at the time, and missed out on all the cool minis I might have wanted, save Bjeorn.

I know what you mean, there was some hesitance from our group too. A couple house rules later and we are having such a blast now though.

It's a shame that 3rd never really caught on for us as it seems to support big battles much better. The guys just couldn't get beyond some of the stranger ideas that were implemented.

Ie. if the weapon being fired at you while you're in cover doesn't penetrate your armor you might as well be standing in the open. The entire way they re-vamped vehicles, and the whole move shoot charge system(this especially seemed to over simplify things in our opinion)

If any of these things have changed I would be interested in hearing about them, we haven't really kept up on the changes as we saw 4th and 5th as more of tweaks to 3rd than full on re-vamps.

Eh... its gotten better, but all of what you mention is still there in some form or other.

Well that's ok, seems to be more popular now than ever which means we can still get our models easily ;)

We always thought it funny that given the rules for frag grenades in the new game they didn't just call them blind grenades.

Wow 2nd ed that brings back some awesome memories and the Dark Millenium companion set with all the psychic power and wargear cards, good times. I have to confess though I was mainly a nid back then and had many epic games (2500 - 3500 with 2nd ed points) against mainly SW, BA and Chaos.

SW players in our group out numbered any other race player-wise (Eldar, DA and BA seemed to be the armies of the day) and so earned my respect through some truely great games, minis and the breathe taking Mark Gibbons art in the 2nd codex.

It has been nothing but a good time for us, certain aspects can definately be unbalancing or open to power-gaming. If you have a group more interested in having fun characterful battles nothing comes close in our opinion.

2500-3500 pts!! :D I'm not sure epic is a strong enough word for that. The compulsory movement phase probably took as long as a current game would. I love all the old art, especially John Blanche and MG.
