Upcoming New Plastic Wolves

Not to be a hater;

But does anyone else think that the 2 pictures we've seen of the new plastic wolf heads and legs seem a bit off?

The facial expressions, the over the top, and frankly unrealistic hair, and what's up with those legs? They look a bit like chaos leg armour of recent past.

I'm for one just hoping the rest of the sprue is better, and will probably 'shave' off the crazy hair with a modeling knife and re-sculpt it to my liking.

What's your take on this, and has anyone seen more than just the 2 pictures we been given as of late???

Judging the whole set on 2 minis is a bit extreme.

The Space Wolf minis have always had wild, over the top hair. Even in 2nd edition.

I think the legs look odd because they are standing straighter than a typical marine -- folks aren't used to seeing that. Don't forget that the rules rumors are the wulfen are represented in some form so perhaps the "kit-bashed" look is intentional.

The legs do have a little more resemblance to the early "bell-bottom" look of 2nd and 3rd ED.

"...frankly unrealistic..." seems a bit harsh as this is the 40K universe where Lasguns and man-portable Autocannons are not only possible but relatively common. Not to mention Space Elves, Daemons and so on, so I'm not buying that particulr comment, myself.

Shaving off of the hair and sculpting your own is perfectly allowable and well within anyones rights to model things to their own liking. If it doesn't crank your handle, fix it. Customizing is the part I enjoy the most as it allows one to express their creativity, IMO.

After you buy them, you can do whatever you like to them.

That mohawk is NOTHING compared to the old 2nd Edition SPace Wolf Scout Sergeant with the bit triangle of hair on his head xD I love that guy.

I for onne like the new minis. The leg-details and random stuff add to the 2nd edition, pre-heresy, 13th company-feeling I've always liked with the Space wolves

I couldn't possibly complain about a huge amount of bare headed, PLASTIC options(rumored 30) for us to use as modeling. I couldn't possibly jump the gun and think the these would represent a whole line of new plastics. (and even if they do, they are fine enough for me).

I'd rather have the mohawk guy in the teasers vs afro man that we currently have(although I'm very happy to have them and many other options)

Key:

PLASTIC: Made large because it is very easy to modify the plastic.

IMO, i like the chaosesque look of the new minis, theyll go well with my already chaosesque wolves. They are supposed to be barbarians. They are the most individual of all the Space Marine Chapters, always have been. Thank Russ!!! If you want them to be pretty play Ultramarines. And the mohawk isnt any worse than the current triangle spike hairdo that is available now. I would have to agree with my brothers on the point of not basing opinions on two of a possible 30ish combos we will get on the new sprue(s), and on buy it and then do what you want with it.
It could also be how the photo was taken... I remember people saying how the Woodelf stag in the photo had a head like a bulldog XD but I would think most people would agree that the photo taken for it wasn't the best one (for representing the model). The same could apply here :D.
The legs do look a it wonky but overall I like them, particularly the Wolfy Bolter and the Chainsword just looks awesome, would deffinitely make for great Frost Blades. The heavy detail is nice for a change and gives the models a distinct look, I actually thought they were pewter given the level of detail. Hopefully now there will be more to say "These are Space Wolves!" then just a few pelts and wonky hair doos.

Im not a fan of the topknots... but thats just because I hate topknots and think they should have died with the mid 80's. No offense to any who where them... I just dont want it on my minis.

That being said I like the new legs, and the idea of not having to GS every single shoulder pelt or such in the army is very tempting.

Overall, I think the minis are decent. I'm not a particular fan of the topnots and the facial expressions are a little too much for my taste. I don't mind the "chaosy" look though, but then I already incorporate it into my minis. I really like all the little wolfy details ... even if they're misplaced on the models. (GH markings on the BC!)

I think we should also keep in mind what these models are. They are our first look at the new SW range. As such, I don't think that the first priority was to make totally kick butt, super dynamic models. These two were built for one purpose ... to show off the cool new bits that are on the SW upgrade sprue.

Combining that sprue with a regular tactical/assault/devastator marine box and you'll tone down the look a lot.

Guess I created a bit of a storm here....

I hope, as many of you said that the pctures are a bit distorted, whether due to angle or light, and that the models look a little better in person.

As for the whole 'unrealistic' comment, I meant, unrealistic for the fluff we've read of and has been created.

I'm not hating, but I just always expect more from the GW product because of it's reputation...

I guess we will not really know until the rest of the sprues become avail. !

There's always a storm every time a new codex/expansion/mini comes out. Don't feel bad for starting this one ... and you didn't even start it, it's been smouldering in the rumour thread.

I don't know if this is what you meant, but I don't think we can really say we've been disapointed by GW regarding the quality of the minis. Aside from the wolf head front sight on the GH bolter (which is, what ... 2mm wide!) the details and the quality of the figs are as good as any plastic mini in the range and way better than many.

Stylistically though, there will always be differences of opinion. The sculptor likes topnots and mohawks ... not much we can do but shave them off if we don't like them. I don't like purity seals on my SWs ... I shave them off. As far as the chaos inspirations ... that's acutually on par with the imagery of SWs. Also, if the 13th is included in the codex, the chaos bits are that much more appropriate since the 13th has been canilabilizing off chaos marines to maintain their equipment.

I'll reserve final judgement until I see the whole range and have the minis in my hands. To date though, I can't really say that I'm disapointed, even if I don't like everything about them.

Having played space wolves since their 1st own codex...I see no differance. I enjoy the models and think that they look great.

space wolves are not a bunch of crazy space vikings covered in hair and smell of beer and cave. 13th warrior... the movie... watch it.. thats them. 100% space wolves.

First off, not to hijack the thread but, "Hail and well met Brothers" I'm a fairly new Wolf, and have been working on them for the past 8-9 months.

And the pics do not do the minis justice. I saw them last weekend at Gamesday and they look much better in person.

Agreed Warhorse

Haveing been following the news and rumors since I started working on my Wolves, I was very excited to see the two new mini's at Gamesday in Chicago this past weekend as well.

One of the space wolves is asian/Arab!?!?!?!? (or have I got my films mixed up XD)

Yeah, the vikings in 13th warrior are pretty good representations of what SW should be attitude wise. As for the "13th warrior", he's supposed to be arab ... but he's played by a latino (Antonio Banderas). The new era of spagetti westerns?

The "problem" with top-knots is that it's more or less the only way for GW to do "long" hair on sprue-heads, so to say. I guess they can't make long hair downwards since it's bound to fit differently dependning on what kind of arms, backpack or weapon the marine will carry.

I think they'll make up for this with the metal minis (as seen previously with models like the wulfen or rune priest, who had some dreadlocks and braids and stuff never seen or the plastic heads).

I think the faces are great though. Over the top is the way of the space wolves, and I'll prefer "too much and over the top" over "to litte, no effort" any day, soo... :)

That Arab would be our occaisional inquisitorial allies.... or perhaps a navigator :D.
