"Pre-heresy" Death Guard Rhinos

Recommended Posts

I am quite happy with how these turned out. Especially considering it is my first attempt with pigments. I will likely go back and fix a few details in time (just realised that I forgot to fix the headlights for instance) but overall I consider them finished.

I appreciate any feedback. Please do not hold back on what you consider to be bad about them, I prefer good honest, straight to the gut critic rather than some bland "good job".

Thank you for looking.

well, as for me, there are not enough details on it; or at least they aren't painted (enough?).

Don't get me wrong, it's a very nice model/paint job, but it seems somewhat unfinished.

Also, on some edges, the chipped metal doesn't look realistic; it just looks like paint.

I've got a question for you: I was planning on buying/trying pigments myself, but i'm somewhat in doubt.

Could you share some experiences with us?

Thank you for your excellent comments hidje. I believe you are right on both accounts.

To your question. My experience with pigments is that they are a truly great tool. As I said I have no previous experience with them and I did rush this job a little and still the result is great, I think. Far better than anything I could have painted. I also have limited experience as a painter so if you got a good base as a painter some pigments will easily give your work that extra oomph.

To see what you can do with them check this splendid forum - http://www.migproductionsforums.com/phpBB3/

This is a wip shot of my first try:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/bladerunner_35/2rustupclose.jpg

Here I had basically just started to experiment. Adding teaspoon of "rust" pigment and mixing it with Gryphonne Sepia (GW was) and water. Then I just splashed it on very liberally.

Edit: The models themselves where bought by yours truly way back when. I imagine they are not all that hard to come by on e-bay or the like if you keep looking.

The exhausts are made with black pigments and I have also added some light and dark brown pigments on the lower sides and bottom.

My point is that if I can achieve these results just like that, I am sure that I and anyone else can get some truly remarkable results with just a little practice. Pigments are also relatively cheap (I went to a normal hobby painting store and bought 450 grams for about 20 euros and that will probably last me at least a few years).

What exactly makes you unsure about them?

Edit try two: seems my edit didn't take. Anyways, the models are simply old and store bought by me way back when.

Looking really good mate. I agree that a relatively understated scheme is very pre-Heresy DG - perhaps some subtle additions of Nurgle iconography would work - a crudely scrawled fly, a trio of skulls... I think this would be all that is needed to "finish" the rhinos.

That is really a very good idea. I cannot believe I haven't thought of it myself. It would tie in well with my Plauge Marines. Thanks dude!

And thank you everyone else for your comments.

Do you mean like this?

The pinkish tint is from the weathering and is representing excessive weathering, rust, dust and stuff. The scheme is straight from the Death Guard Rhino mk1b on page 25 of the Imperial Armour 2. I had to extrapolate a little but I think it is largely right. Although it is quite a bit different from the Death Guard Rhino that can be seen in Horus Heresy Visions series.
