Welcoming new Wolves!

Like many here, the Wolves are my first army. I started playing them about 3 years ago and have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of our new codex. I do, however, realize that the new codex is going to make the SW the trendy "new" army, at least for a short while. Hopefully, it doesn't last too long; I like being the 'wayward' chapter!

I agree w/ Spacefrisian, though. Just save a lot a trouble and don't reply to any I-just-bought-the-new-codex-and-I'm-new-to-the-SWs posts. Like Beef said, it's only a matter of time before we find out who the wolves in sheep's clothing are; if they're a true Wolf, they'll stick around. If not, well... I happen to have a frost-blade handy that can take care of that... :D

For Russ!

You meen "Sheap in wolves Clothing" ;) Or DA's trying to grow a beard to get into the Fang for some Free Ale

The way I see the release of the new Codex will only strengthen the SW standing within the 40K universe.

How many of you older players stumbled over one of the early codex releases, read a bit of SW fluff and thought what an amazing fighting force???

Every new collector has to start somewhere and why not with the release of the new codex.

If the codex and minis fly off the shelves GW might realise what a winner there onto, and next time we wont have to wait so bloody long to get a new codex and minis. But there should be non of this ''I'm not talking to you because you've only just picked up the hobby'' BS, because lets face it, its all a bit pathetic.

ah now i think the worry isnt the new folks playing the army more that this forum is very cool and the shouting about coolz may upset the force so to speak

i agree it is silly as beef says the flyby night fellas will move on blood angels next year i here ,i can only speak for my self and thats im wolf iv always been a wolf and always will be a wolf, you new folks need a hand just shout out well be here

I fell in love with them when a cyclone missile launcher could wipe out a squad of 20boys in one round of shooting. I fell in love with Wolves when even the little SGT was his own version of a Bar room brawl-story. I fell in love with the Wolves due to them being the ONLY REAL good guys. And the fought dirty, and loved it. That was almost, what 15 years ago.....I am 27 now and still loving them.

In that time Ive played Wolves, Blood Angles, and Guard...and I have ALWAYS gone back to my Wolves. I just love em. Though...this is the first time Ive ever had a fully painted squad and transport in my army...I like painting so Ill paint anything and never get my forces done LOLOL

Awww, does this mean Decoy and I can tag team the new recruits? how else will we know that they can take a good beatin'. Look at Jonas and Tid. Knock them sensless for 7 pages, and they are already posting like a grey hunter.

But in all seriousness, as long as people contribute, I'm fine with 'em.

Being a Sister of Battle player, I've always been suspect of Space wolves mutation and possible heresy. Now that my army is ranging close to 4-5k, I'm looking to muster a small hunting pack. To further my investigation of this interesting breed of Space marines. Hopefully I can expect some insight and ideas from this council.

Here is the basic list I'm thinking of buying:

Ven. Dread

2 Land Speeders, and 1 Storm land Speeder. Hopefully the Wolves will be able to utilize this new speeder.

4 troops (most likely 2 of each Blood claw, and Grey hunters).

2-3 Rhinos

Assault squad

Wolf guard terminators w/ some sort of independent character

1-2 Scout squads.

Is there a link to a variety of Space wolf color schemes. I'd like to view some of their different colors.

I'm shooting for about 1500-1750 points for this hunting pack. Am I on the right trail?

Bah! I was on vacation with out a way to post! :bonks OID with power tankard:

But your right, so long as they contribute and dont paint thier wolves DA green, drink wine instead of ale, or object to us starting brawls, I'm perfectly fine with whoever shows up.

New people aren't a problem though, nor are people genuinely interrested in the army. The people who pick up every new Codex and Army regardless just to jump on the bandwagon are the troublesome sort that clutter the place up with bad questions and vanish within a few months. Happens everytime and gets no less irritating each time around.

Nobody here is going to chew out someone new to the hobby, but nor are we likely to take the time to dance to the whims of the wishy washy bandwagon jumpers. Best idea in this thread is to just ignore them and fortunately they don't stick around long. :D

Best thing I can advise for genuine Blood Claws is to post with some courtesy and use the resources before posting questions, make sure to get Bran ale and shortly enough you'll all fit in just fine

So when did Space wolves become a private club? If there is better places to ask these questions, than a supposed hardened veterans group, than point me to a link. Ignoring people is not exactly the best way to promote new members. Yes, you will get a lot of questions from people wanting to start a Space Wolf army. I personally don't see the problem with that. I get the same thing when people are looking for info on Witch Hunters.

I do not mean any ill will with this post. I'm pointing out the flaw with the desire to ignore questions, from people interested in starting a Space Wolf army. I'm pretty sure Space wolf vets would be the place to ask.

I have only been playing 40k a little over a year and started with Dark Angels. However, I found that I liked the fluff and style of the Wolves better, so I switched over just before the announcement of the new codex. When I joined here, I was welcomed and greeted enthusiastically by a fun loving, rowdy bunch that made me feel right at home. Had I been a couple months later, i wonder if I would have felt the same, seeing how some of the members here are treating our newest pack brothers. Yes, some are coming just because they will want to play the newest Codex and will be gone shortly, but many others have all of a sudden realized how much fun the Wolves are to play and will be long term, loyal Wolves. So please guys, let's make the new ones feel as welcome now, as you did to me a few months ago.

This is why we have the report button. If you see someone breaking the rules, hit the report button and it will go to the appropriate people to be dealt with.

Considering you can't tell off a post if someone is new to the army, returning to the army or "into it until the next codex" advocating that people should simply ignore "noob questions" is not how we operate here.

I'm not saying ignore questions or not be helpfull, just to avoid getting snippy with the influx of bandwagoners that will undoubtedly show up. Honest newb questions are all fine and good, we get tons around here anyway. You seem to think I'm implying something I'm not, turning away new members isn't the point, the point is simply to avoid friction. Simply not posting in every single intro thread and new members using the many wonderfull resources we have here will go a long way towards making sure the influx doesn't create problems between the older and newer members. Simple as that and I really don't see what the problem is with it.

I respectfully disagree. It's an old adage, "if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything." I'm not saying be mean or offensive or anything remotely like that, simply that if we don't have something positive to say in the plethora of "hi I'm new here" threads that will inevitably occur, just don't say anything. As far as I can see avoiding flaming and insulting is exactly how we operate here. After all we haven't had to deal with a sudden and massive influx of noobs in a looooooong time, there's bound to be friction but that doesn't mean we shouldn't or can't try to avoid it.

Lemme make this abundantly clear, personally I like to think every new Blood Claw is here to stay, but realistically I know that's not the case and with the numbers we'll likely be seeing there is bound to be some friction. Ideally we'll all be able to cope with the noob intro's and so forth but if not, Spacefrisian's idea is a good one, to simply ignore them and don't say anything. It's better to say nothing than to be mean. I still expect on a whole the Fang will hold up to it's sterling reputation and deal with the new Wolves with respect and wisdom but if any of the old Wolves get frustrated or irritated, simply find a nice den and chill.

For that matter it's advice that is applicable on any forum for any situation, so many heated arguments and problems could be avoided by the participants simply stopping and saying nothing if they can't say something nice. Would save us all a lot of hassle if everyone did that more often.

Well I'm afraid you'll have to wait for the new codex before I can offer any advice on that. It seems like fun but ditch the assault squad they're expensive at the minute. I have a feeling you might be looking at about 2000 points but I'm not sure. Possibly more.

a Vendread is a wonderful, adaptable, and flexable HQ choice- it can also be fielded as an elite at the moment, and I can gaurantee they arent taking away the ability to have dreadnaughts... so its all around an excellent choice.

I like LSs, though not everyone is a fan- my advice is to have a plan with them... I think MM and Typhoons are really the ones worth taking, but some people like dual heavy bolters.

Troops are always good- GHs are the most flexable troop choice around, and I reccommend taking atleast a 3:2 ration of GHs to BCs... or for a new player, 2:1.

Assault Squad? In SW terms what you want is a BC squad without jump packs- they are very good at assault. Since thats already on your list... Id leave these guys tell last.

One squad of Scouts should do it... unless you want a squad of snipers and a OBEL squad. They are not a troops choice, though they are very very useful.

Wolf Gaurd Terminators are fun... they also make good seargents! Never underestimate the power of a rerolling 2+ armor save on your seargent to keep the squad alive.

And thats around 3k worth of stuff... Id say start out with 750, with a vendread, and two troops, and a support element- and go from there.

Question:

Are you doing this for Apoc or through the Allies rule in the Witchhunter Codex?

@Grey Mage & Mikal Wolfheart: Wow, I had no idea SW stuff was that much more expensive pts wise. I guess I'll have to rethink a lot of this. I was looking forward to doing some really neat things with the assault squad as well. Guess I'll have to change those conversion plans to more of a display thing. If (big if) the Land Speeder storm is an option for SWs than I'd most likely go with 2 squads. I like the model, and the ability to speed forward and assist where ever needed. Though with the high points I'm looking at. I might end up having to drop a squad of them.

I've been playing 40k since Sisters of Battle had their own codex. I've been wanting to build another assault style army for awhile now. It was a toss up between Eldar, and Space wolves. Obviously I choose to join the Vikings, and not the nancy prancy elves (I'll let my Dark elf army take care of that. =p).

@Schertenleib: Nope, brand new project. I've had my Sisters army done for a couple years now. I just keep adding little bits here and there. You know how something catches your eye, and you want to add it. Than see some more possible conversions and modelling (yes, even with all pewter Sisters). There really is not much else I could add to my Sisters army without making doubles of things. I also just finished building a 3k Dark elf army. Which I'm sure will eventually have bits and pieces added to it over the years. Now I want to do another 40k Army. Space Wolves were my choice. Loved the fluff, the grit, the ability to have a total plastic army for 40k. Meaning a ton of modelling options, and personal touchs. The nail in the deal was when I heard of the new codex coming. Win, Win, in my book.

Guess I'll stick to buying things we know will remain mostly unchanged. Blood claws and Grey Hunters. I'll grab a HQ of some sort and work with that at first. Thanks for the info. Oct. should be interesting when the codex goes live. Hopefully my army won't end up being somewhere near apoc point lvls. Than again, if it does, just means it will take a lot longer to buy it.

SW can be done, if you are willing to try GS, with AoBR.. I've seen it, and frankly it takes little effort to do! That might help your cost..

It's not the money factor. It's how many points I want to work with at a time. I'll start with the suggested 750, and build blocks of 750 on top of it.

Not a bad idea!

Let me know how everything works for you, and as you can see, we are all here to help!

Just stepped in from a long cold walk around the Fang and decided to catch up on posts here abouts. You may not know me, because I don't post much, but I've been here for sometime. As for the Sons of Russ, I became hooked by a drawing of a camoflaged (yes...camoflaged) Space Wolf getting ready to ambush some orks in an old book you might have heard of called "Rogue Trader" They were my first 40k army and have been with me in one incarnation or another ever since. However, the lack of a new codex on the horizon, has had my wolf army hibernating for some time and I'm "chomping at the bit"(pun intended) to get my hands on a new codex. So that's ..who I am, so you don't think I'm some young pup that just fell off the wagon waiting for the next shiny new codex to come out.

Being long in the fang and more than a bit of a grumbler, I would caution against dismissing the "new wolves" so easily. For sure there will be alot of "OOOOooo shiny new codex" kids and yes, their armies will be available soon on E-bay for us to buy and throw in the paint stripper, BUT... some of these new wolves may turn out to be at the beginning of their long cold walk as a Son of Russ and we should welcome them, rather than dismiss them out of hand. Now, if they say "I'm starting a Space wolf army and I have (lists 5-10 other armies)...that might send up a red flag or two. But we certainly don't want to turn away those honestly interested and looking for a little online comraderie. So, I urge caution and a bit of open mindedness, lads.

As for me, I say its about bloody time, for the new codex and I can't wait to see my beloved army ressurected. I've already begun stockpiling basic marines awaiting conversion and a few kits I know I'll need, since I basically have to start my army from the ground up again.( I sold my old army to a dear friend, since I knew they'd be in good hands when I moved a few years back.) So, I'll be looking forward to your critiques when I begin modeling.

Now...where's the ale?

If I might wade in here. No one here is talking about rejecting people out of hand, or being unkind or cruel to any new board members. Nor do we feel that playing Space Wolves is some kind of "Gentlemen's club" that only certain people can join. However, many of us here have played Wolves for many years now, in spite of very limited support from GW. As a result, a camaraderie has built up here and for some of us that's taken literally years to achieve. We're here because we like all the aspects of the army, not just the rules.

What we are perhaps concerned about is that come the new Codex that will be eliminated by people have no real interest in the fluff or modelling side of things and only want the "1337 pwnage list for pwning n00bs" - as some here will remember, 2nd Edition Wolves could be accurately described as "Cheese and Beard in Model form." Now, maybe us Long Fangs are over reacting, but the Fang is generally a pretty laid back place and that's the way we like it. We don't do Power Gaming, and we have very little time for those who do. And we don't really want to be associated with power gaming either. That's all.
