Changing normal marines into Space Wolves

Crimson Fury

Recommended Posts

Hey there,

I've recently been thinking about what legion of space marines to collect and i've really got set on space wolves, however, all i ahev at the moment is regular marines and few pieces from the space wolf upgrade sprue.

I was wondering if anyone knew where to get the sprue or bitz separately from, or an alternative would be how to make the the marines look more Space wolf-ish.

Thanks

Crimson

I've yet to do it, but GS'ng fur pelts, wolf tails, teeth necklaces, and runes are all found on here is what appear to be absolutely easy as pie.

Barring that, www.bitzbarn.com has great selection of bits, and cheap. That, or Hoard o' Bits on ebay...

Paint.

Could you perhaps elaborate on the ways therein with painting that our esteemed brother could better the minis?

I think he's wanting to make a more solid impression and thematic element than just a paint scheme.

Chaotic Death, thank you for the suggestion on the marauder bits!!!

Crimson,

I am a proponent for the subtle incorporation of traditional Fenrisian tribal elements into my Space Wolves army. Some folks like to completely 'wolf-out' their models, but my personal preference is for a degree of moderation. Again, it is all about personal preference, so go with what makes you happy.

With that in mind, I think Lunchb0x is on the right track. With some regular Space Marines, a few spare Space Wolves bitz, and the right paint job, I believe that you can build a completely acceptable Space Wolves force and no one would question whether your models fit the theme appropriately.

Here is an example:

This is just a normal metal Space Wolves veteran, with no added "wolfy bitz", but I don't think that there is any question that he is a Space Wolves model (the Wolf Guard Leader for my Wolf Scouts, in fact).

The same thing goes for the Wolf Guard Leader for this Grey Hunters pack; the only "wolfy bitz" added to this model is the "wolves-head" backpack:

Valerian

I agree with Valerian in that if you paint them like Space Wolves, then they are Space Wolves. The first time I collected the Wolves, I didn't want to use the torsos and the other wolfy bits that came with the models. I justed used the regular bits and painted them in the appropriate color scheme and no one ever questioned them. This time around though, I am using all the wolf bits. It is a matter of personal preference, though.
I agree with our Brothers in that the paint job and icons should be more than enough to make them Space Wolves. I usually suggest a bit more wolf-like than what Val does, but, as others have said, it's truly up to personal preference.

Now as these the same marines that have been Blood Angels, the ones that were Imperial Fists or both - the poor chaps must be getting mighty confused by now little brother. :D

Seriously, use the sprue to wolf up some of them but you can get away with many just being in SW grey (whatever that is and that is a whole separate topic!).

You can also pick up the odd unpainted old metal SW figure which are already wolfed up for around a quid on fleabay - when mixed in with the new stuff they, IMHO, add great variety as well as gaining you the Wolf Lord Durfast Spiritwolf(whoever he is)'s special "saga points" for wolfiness above and beyond etc. :D :)

Actually i have around 15ks worth of space marines Built some of it unbuilt, 5k Ba, 2k Imperial fist, 1500pts for Crimson fists, 1500 points for salamanders, 2k ultramarines and the other 3k would be space wolves.

Thanks for the responses guys much appreciated

It depends to an extent on the units as well. My Grey Hunters and blood claws are fairly standard Marines, with the occasional head or talisman marking them as Sons on Russ. The more senior members such as the Wolf Guard and Long Fangs and the HQ units (with the exception of the Iron Priest) are bedecked with SW paraphernalia. At the end of the day though, the paintjob and a few choice conversions will be more than adequte. Though you can sculpt pelts onto every model, there is no real reason to unless you really want to.

I tend to agree with Valerian as well. I try to keep the wolfy bits for more senior wolves, so your regular marines would be great for Blood Claws and Grey Hunters. You can easily convert IC's as well from the really kick a$$ space marine characters to make more unique wolves. (thinking about it, more unique doesn't really work as an item is either unique or it is not.....maybe more unusual?)

Anyway....paint the models accordingly, maybe get the wolf head shoulder pads if you're of a mind to do so. Free hand symbols are my preference, but to each his/her own. Convert your IC's

Some "regular" marines as grey hunters:

Seems to work ok. Just mix and match.
