Battle Report : Space Wolves vs Imperial Guard

Hi brothers , tonight i played 2 games against an imperial guard player .

It was very hard and the first game was a total failure !

We played with 1000 points more ore less and my army was :

Wolf priest + 9 Grey Wolves on rhino

10 Blood Claws

2x5 Long fangs

I know that i had to use to QG but we are learning to play so he allowed me to play with one wolf priest :) .

He had :

1 command teamwithout anything

Sly marbo

3 teams of guardsmen with lascannon ,heavy bolters ecc ..

2 Leman russ one demolisher and 1 Executioner .

No beer tonight to celebrate this defeat ...:)

So the game started and he throw to me everything ! My first team of long fangs vanished against his demolisher after the first turn and at the end of his fourth turn i had only the Grey Wolves , my Qg and half Long fangs while i killed only Sly ....

So we decided to try planet strike and i played only my two troops and two QG against all of his army without leman russ and Sly marbo .

In this second game i put all on dread pods and i won quite easy :) .

So brothers my question is : How can i improve my army to fight against army like Imperal Guard ? I think that i one good strategy is to put everything on drop pods so i will have chances to fight in close combat ...

I want to buy also a Dreadnought , because i want to use him as a second QG and i want to see him crush his leman russ ;) !

This is all for now ! Sorry again for my bad english !

Well, first off, against guard, you cant have infantry foot slog. I play mechanized, and just the simple fact that they are in a rhino makes them sooooooo much harder to kill. A rhino also allows you to close rapidly with a guard line, so you can pop out and assault him (which is where guardsmen fail) across multiple units.

But yeah, he has a list that is custom made to take down power armor, so you will have to invest in some transports of some kind to take him down. Be wary of drop podding near guard, as even lasguns can start to hurt when you consider you'll have like 100 shots coming your way in rapidfire range.

OBEL scouts are great against guard, I'd drop both squads of long fangs, they'll come to atleast 330+ without weapon changes. Can spend 100pts on a 5man OBEL squad with 2 plasmas and a melta, 120 if you give them meltabombs, give your blood claws a rhino for 55pts (with extra armor), put your wolf priest in with the claws so they don't suffer from headstrong. A Whirlwind is only 85pts and is a monster vs anything without 3+ saves.

You didn't list any upgrades for your troop choices, so not sure if you have any heh, if you're using more upgrades on the long fangs you can use those points + the 75 or so leftover points to either get a little more anti-tank, more upgrades for your troops, or making your list "legal" by adding another HQ.

I have to agree with the suggestion of dropping the long fangs, they are very expensive and not that effective.

At a thousand points you've got a couple of options if you're only running 1 HQ which while not codex legal, almost any player would allow you to out of fairness. First off you need to get mechanized if you're going to be an assault force, I'd get a rhino for your other squad and if you can find the points go for a Land Raider for the Blood Claws. at a 1000 points most armies can't handle 14 armor and I've literally chased armies around the board with mine (as much fun as it sounds).

I'd add a small 4 man scout squad armed with a melta gun and a power sword, this will be about 80 points and will cause terror for your opponent. They'll help buy time for your units moving across the board and will either take out a heavy support choice or tie up a heavy weapons squad. I'd also add either a vindicator or a predator to the mix so you some extra firepower to hand enemy armor.

My 1000 list looks like this

WGBL: Frost Blade, Storm Shield, Frags, Wolf Pelt

Venerable Dreadnought: Lascannon, Heavy Flamer

BC's x8: (1pw, 1pf) In Land Raider with WGBL

GH's x6: (1pw, 1 Plasma Gun)

Land Raider

Vindicator

Scouts x4: 1pw, 1 MG, Frags

Basically I have the bare bones GH squad to squat on a home objective and use the rest of the army to be aggressive and take the fight to the enemy. If I could play with only 1 HQ I'd drop the dread for a predator and razorback for the GH squad.

Thanks for all your advices , brothers :(!

To answer to Forseti , my long fangs were equipped with 2xlascannons ,missile launcher and plasma cannon ; They did a great job against the Executioner because he couldn't fire for 2 turns ! At the third turn they all made 1 and yeah the one with plasma cannon died in a very bad way :tu:!

I think that i will try the scouts and the two rhinos (i'm waiting the new codex before buying something). In fact i was slowly and without covers so he had a great time shooting at my wolves :(!

I throw in a Legal and easy to play list you might wanna take a look at it.

1000 points. Mechanized and easy to play.

Ouch! I just one my first major victory against tau (the other shooty buggers who have killed me a half dozen times) and the rest of these guys have it right. OBEL scouts, whirlwinds, and getting across the board quick. Forseti dislikes it but I find that a droppod dread or two properly kitted out makes a load of difference helping the rest of your guys get across the board. Inertial guidance rule, ven dread's ballistic skill 5, and a multimelta's innate ability to toast tanks means you can drop right behind a hostile tank, not worry about scatter too much, and blow the offending vehicle to shreds. It also means that your OBEL scouts stay alive a little longer and can do more damage 'cause "oh crap there is a walking tank in the middle of my deployment zone" tends to distract the other player. Happy hunting!

Well first thanks a lot for all your answers ! I must admit that i love/hate drop pods too :D! Personally i totally love the idea of space wolves falling down from the sky and fight :D , but it's a little bit a question of luck !

I think that i will try rhinos + scouts ...and a dreadnought on dread pod !
