Wolves vs. Tau battle report

Alrighty, it was a 750pt battle, 4x4 board, terrain was large ruined walls in opposite corners, a medium sized wood in one of the other corners, and a pile of stones near the center. Mission was Annihilation.

My list

Ven dread, multimelta, droppod 200

Wolf scouts (5) 1 w/ poweraxe, 2 w/ shotguns

Wolf guard pack leader w/ powersword, bolt pistol, melta bombs

Bloodclaws (10) flamer, powerfist, powersword

Grey Hunters (9) 8 bolters, plasma gun

whirlwind

He was a new player using pretty much every model he had except for a devilfish and gundrones, so the list was a little odd

Shas'el air burst frag launcher, plasma rifle

2 bodyguards cyclic ion blaster, missile pod, 2 plasma rifles

3 stealthers 1 with fusion blaster

firewarriors (12) shas'ui w/ bonding knife

kroot (12) 2 kroot hounds

Railhead with smart missile system

I don't remember what all upgrades he had to his suits but it was mainly targetting arrays, multitrackers, no invulnerable saves.

I went first, deploy opposite the woods and ruins with a ruined wall on my left. Whirlwind went behind the wall, bloodclaws between the board edge and the wall facing the wood, grey hunters in the middle of the deployment zone. He took one look at th whirly and put all his troops in the wood, packed in a tight two rowed firing line, hammerhead in the dead middle, commander and co. behind the ruins. He chose to deepstrike the stealthers.

Turn 1: Wolves

I droppoded the dread right behind the hammerhead, the scatter actually sending me into the crises suit squad close by but inertial guidance system let me move it and deploy the dread about 3 inches from the railhead. Both footslogger squads moved at full speed, bloodclaws toward the wood, the grey hunters moved up next to the rock pile in the center, both rolling 5 to run. the dread stunned the railhead so it couldn't move or shoot while the whirlwind dropped a pie plate into the forest. Scatter meant it only killed 2 kroot.

Turn 1: Tau

He moved his infantry up to the edge of the forest and rapid fired the blood claws. Fortunately half of his squads were out of range, so I only lost 2. The Grey hunters weren't so lucky, as commander and co. moved forward and killed all of them, claiming first kill point (bloody lucky, he got 3 sixes when rolling to wound with the rending cyclic ion blaster). Railhead, of course, did nothing. commander and co. moved toward the whirlwind.

Turn 2: Woves

Ok, that was bad. I had completely lost one squad and my big bad artillery was threatened. My scout showed up right next to the dread, and the bloodclaws moved toward the kroot in the wood. Whirlwind killed two firewarriors this time around while the bloodclaws flamed and shot the kroot, killing four and routing them. Ven dread fired, hit, penetrated, and yes! Blew the railhead sky high! The scouts, suddenly without their intended target, fired at the firewarriors, killing one. The droppod's stormbolter fired and actually wounded the cyclic ion blaster suit.

Turn 2: Tau

He was looking pretty sorry for himself by now. His stealthers showed up, and he tried to repeat what I had done with the ven dread, deepstriking them next to the whirlwind. They scattered off the table and I got to place them way far on the edge where they couldnt do anything. His kroot regrouped, and happened to be in rapid fire range of the bloodclaws. He moved his suits toward the wood and rapid fired with everything he had. When the smoke cleared, 3 bloodclaws were left, but they didn't run. He moved his suits back toward the center of the table.

Turn 3: Wolves

Things were definately looking up. I moved the bloodclaws and the wolf scouts toward the fire warriors and the dread toward the crises suits. Whirlwind killed what was left of the kroot ( I LOVE no cover saves!) and the ven dread advanced on the commander and co., vaporizing the cyclic ion blaster suit and putting a wound on the other one with the stormbolter. The bloodclaws and scouts only managed to kill one firewarrior in shooting, but then butchered the rest in assault.

Turn 3: Tau

He moved his suits forward and his stealthers to, but they were going nowhere fast. He managed to kill all except one bloodclaw, who stubbornly refused to run.

Turn 4: I chased the suits and vaporised the last bodyguard with the vendread. The whirlwind dropped a pie plate on the stealters, but didn't do anything.

It was here he decided to give up. I won 4-1 in kill points. A victory worthy of a great saga! Tuditanus, get to work on it! :D

Best unit was the ven dread. It killed his most dangerous unit, the railhead, before it could do any damage what so ever.

Sorry, no pics. I dont have a camera and wouldn't know how to get them on the computer anyway. Im a wolf, not a cogboy!

And yes, I know that I forgot all about the whirlwind causing pinning. That probably would have kept more bloodclaws alive, and I will never forget again. And no more footslogging grey hunters!

Grats on a fine victory!

I'm glad that you had a fine demonstration of just how nasty a MM vendread in a pod can be. You just send it at the most fearsome piece of armor on the table, and watch the fireworks. Having the scouts as a "plan B" was a nice touch too.

I think you also had a nice demonstration of how much it can hurt foot slogging against Tau. They can definately shoot the crap out of you with high strength pulse rifles and AP3 plasma. A little armor goes a long way (tho the damn pulse rifles can still glance a rhino. If he's only got a railhead and no broadsides, bring a Landraider and watch him cry pathetic blue tears).

Agreed ;)

Good victory indeed - I am always apprehensive about facing Tau without some surprises but it looks like you pulled off a fine victory with a well thought out list. The podding ven dread and whirlwind look like they particularly paid dividends.

Not sure why he took an air burst frag, it does have a large blast and the no cover saves are nice vs imp. guard with ap 5. But against marines its not all that helpful. Never go into battle without atleast 3 or 4 anti-vehicle weapons. He also should have had a devilfish and another squad of fire warriors instead of kroot. Geat win and only losing one full squad.

He actually used the airbust frag quite effectively. With 1/6 chance of killing marines, he targeted the center of squads, essentially a bunch of bolter shots. It accounted for 2 greyhunters and a bloodclaw. As for the rest, he didnt have many models to choose from.

Sweet victory Brother

As mentioned already the Dread in pod rocks and I never go anywhere without my scouts.

I am also apprehensive when facing Tau so I have taken your tactics on board - although I am nearly all mech

dragon950 - it was mentioned that he took all he had. This is always the problem when you are starting out, that the pieces you have won't necessarily be the best against all armies until you have enough options to pick from
