Lesser Demons and Modeling

Recommended Posts

So grad school blows...but I am graduating soon and have a life again, and a triumphant return to 40K. Got my hands on the new rulebook and codices, but I had a question. For the unnamed lesser demons in codex chaos space marines, are there any rules about which models I can use? I mean not trying to be ridiculous but for example the new plastic war hounds from fantasy are amazing looking, can I use them to represent unnamed demons or do they have to be infantry models? Thanks for the help.

You can use any models you want for them, but i suggest having them on a regular infantry base.

yep, pretty much this.

Some ideas that have been tossed around.

Warhounds from Fantasy

Dryads from Fantasy

Bestigors from Fantasy

Skeletons from Fantasy

Zombies from Fantasy

Lizardsmen from Fantasy

seeing a trend here? :D

Ok, dumb questions, why the infantry bases? how do I put warhounds on infantry bases? Initially I was just gonna put them on bike bases. Do I just cut the tabs off the feet and put them on an infantry base and weight it? They are kinda long for infantry bases. Ideas? Thanks for all the help guys. Y'all have helped a ton with the ideas, skinks were my next choice after warhounds.
It doesn't say specifically whart sort of base they should be on, so you could use another type. However, infantry bases are kind of the default. There is also the gameplay aspect to consider. LDs deepstrike, so you want the smallest bases you can get to reduce their chance to mishap. Technically, it also doesn't say you can use biker bases.

Lesser deamons do NOT deepstrike. They are summoned, and MUST be put within 6" of an icon, so will never scatter, which eliminates "deepstrike mishaps". You could have some of them end up getting lost because you can't fit them on the table without placing them in difficult terrain (dangerous terrain roll) or within 1" of an enemy (model dies) but that's not a deepstrike mishap per se.

That being the case, bigger bases can be an advantage, because they "push the unit forward" a bit; the first model is 6" from the icon, but the front of the unit ends up something like 6"+ 2x base size forward from the icon. If you want to exploit this, a mix of 25 mm and cavalry bases can make for a pretty cheesy formation; it ends up looking like an icecream cone with the round bases near the icon and the cav bases forming a wedge that points at the unit you want to charge. Only gains you a few inches, but hey...

EDIT - re- checking the rules, it seems I'm wrong. Summoned daemons "arrive via deepstrike" so mishaps are in fact possible if any of the models would end up in difficult terrain / within 1" of an enemy model. Of course, the fact that you MUST use an icon (which eliminates scatter) makes such mishaps very unlikely, especially if you practice "forming up" your daemons at home, so have a good idea how much space the need to arrive safely.
