Sternguard and combi-weapons

Hi just a quick question. If you upgrade sternguard with a combi-weapon do they lose their special ammo? The reason I ask is because in order to get the combi-weapon it codex states replace their bolter. Thanks.

No, you keep your special ammo.

this has been gone over a bunch already, mostly when the codex was still the newest thing going.

 

short summary:

 

combi-weapons are still bolters. they still get special issue amunition.

storm bolters, bolt pistols, heavy bolters, etc... are NOT "bolters" even though they share the same core technology per the fluff. they cannot use special ammo.

Given the summary by nighthawks then yes he could as the combi-flamer is still a boltgun – with a flamer added. See Codex SM p97 on combi-weapons:

 

"Combi-weapons are bolters that have been specially modified [...]. Each has been expertly converted to house another weapon, [...]"

 

and elsewhere in that section reference is made to the 'bolter'.
