an ultramarines highlight would make it looks ace

I would do the bolter black like in the codex, it easily add nice details on the gun!

By the way your first mini is way better than my first!

Nice effort m8, room for improvement, that will come with time ;)

what i'd suggest is a good light and area to paint, this is my set up at my computer http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/8649/s7304571.jpg , i have a better set up in my room but i'm liking to paint here right now. the lamp has a daylight bulb fitted which is ideal for miniature painting.

Photographing your mini using a sheet of A3 paper as a backdrop & under a strong light will get you the results you're after, don't use the flash on your camera.

hope to see more of your models, Lavaman

Looking much better. I didn't see anyone answer some of your questions from the strat so I will dry to.

1) Watering down your paint: Take your brush and in a small plastic cup add some paint from your paint pot. Kind of like a scoop in cooking if you will. Add 3 or 4 of these to the cup. Then dip you brush into your clean water. Don't shake off the water just move the brush from the water to the mixing cup with the paint. Mix the water into the paint. Do this a number of times in a rate to the n umber of scoops of paint. I use 3 paint / 2 water for mine. Find what works for you, but a rule of thumb is the brighter the color the thinner you want each coat (Within reason you don't want to be putting on colored water).

2) Getting a better picture. You hit the main key get a nice clean back ground. I used 2 white pieces of pastic card for mine. THen the 2ed key is lighting. Place a bright light off to the side (A flex neck desk lamp works great. Place it to be shinging as if from the front 2 o"clock postion. Then take some photos. Make changes to lighting as need and keep going. All done...

3) Highlighting: Simple answer add a mix color to the base color you are painting. So for your dark blue if you wanted to highlight brightly add some white kind of med highlight add some grey and if dark add black. Then add to the either edges if highlighting brightly, or recess's if you want to go dark. This is the most over simplafacation but it will give you and idea to start with. GW's web site also has alot of painting tips and tricks check them out.
