13th Company SW (Heresy Era)

Recommended Posts

Hey all! Been a long while since I picked up a brush and knife and all the weapons of table-top war fare.. Basically having to re-learn all my techniques from the start. And I can tell you, it's more frustrating the second go 'round.. Way more!

In honor of the 'Great Hunt Contest' I decided to try my hand out on some wolves before the new Codex in October, mainly to get color schemes and the like sorted. I went with the 13th Co. because I always loved the idea of them being sent off to pursue the Thousand Sons at the onset of the Heresy. I also did this, because eventually it will give me the option to (if I should so desire) model some Sisters of Silence and Adeptus Custodes (afaik, both were sent with Russ and the Wolves to prospero). I may even time make my gaming board(s) a Prospero/Fenris scene and even model up some of the dirty, filthy witches themselves! (Thousand Sons, that is.).

I have also decided to, if I can, try and truescale these blokes.. I figure if i'm going to tackle the wolves, it means I'll have to get good at GS at some point, (fur, teeth, rune-stones, etc..) so I might as well put the pedal to the floor and go for it.

Up first is an un-named Wolf Guard leader for my 'The Great Hunt' pledge... I'm debating trying some GS to conceal a gap/line in the shoulder fur bits and painting it, but still nervous over the rust on my 'skills' despite the smoothness of the GS on my second Wolf Scout's, legs.. But, I digress, onto the pics!

Some help could especially be used (or just feedback) on highlights, the flesh tones, and overall look of the model. I know the face is pure rubbish, but i'm at a loss for what to do on it. I am rather proud of the cloak, it turned out MUCH better in person, the camera, even with just LED light and no flash, WAY exaggerates the higlights and kills the blending/washing. No idea how to stop that...

Is the armor tone too dark, too light? Also, any advice on what colors to use for a wash to help blend the flesh tones/paint is more than welcome! Never done bare skin on a model... My next idea to try is basing it in brown, or a brown/flesh mixture, and then trying out glazing of the lighter flesh tone, then a wash to blend it back.. But not sure I can pull it off.. My ideal suggestion was the following: dwarf flesh + codex grey with a dab of warlock purple...add flesh and bleached bone to that for high lights...hen i hit it with a wash flesh+ grey... then a wash of blue ... then a wash of red focusing on the cheeks, forehead, and chin to bring some warmth

The above receipe was suggested by a friend much more gifted at painting than I, whose faces I have always envied.. Beyond the fact that he's an Art major, I'd love to try this if I can secure the paints, but not sure it's worth the effort on EVERY face?

Onto the Wolf Scouts!

This guys GS is rough, but other than that, and shoulder pads (on their way in the mail!!) I think he is done!

Wolf Scout #2(proud of the smoother GS here... improvised with a leather working tool designed to bevel edges, etc..):

Really thinking of trying to lighten up the armor on the Wolf Guard, and I realize his arms aren't fully done... But it was a spur of the moment conversion, I intended to try some woad like markings, but not so sure on them now!

That was one concern.. I can try using straight marauder legs to see how that looks... But I like the fact that this conversion (guide seen here: http://www.prophet-miniatures.com/articles...utarticle.html) gives them the same height as SM, or a bra difference explained away by armor. Since they are supposedly just SM out of power armor I thought it fitting.

I guess i'll go try and whip up one with straight marauder legs and see how that looks in comparison. Couldn't hurt, right?

The main thing beyond that is needing some advice on the paint schemes, and needing shoulder pad painting explained to me... It's something I know that I know, but for the life of me can't remember... I.E. what color (red, yellow, black) means what?

Considering trying to pair pure Marauder legs just looked funny, I think I'll pass... I may straighten the head and add a bit of a flowing pelt to the 2nd scouts waist to try and make the movement in the pose not so awkward (thanks for pointing that out Grey Mage). Will also likely be trying either a drybrush or VERY thin repaint, as I noticed some metallic flecks in the armor, and it really is too dark.

Just waiting on my kroot shoulder pads now, should be in the mail any day now.
