The best SoB wargear 17pts can buy?

So here’s the thing.

My Throne of Skulls list is pretty much finalised but I’ve got 17pts left to spend to get up to 1500pts and I’m left with the question of what is the best way to spend these last few points. There are some conditions to how I use them however.

Firstly, my vets have their hands full. They have all got a single and a double handed weapon (BP & Evis) as well as a BoSL. Additionally, every squad has got its heavy/special weapon slots filled so no room for fitting more points in there either.

Next, my canoness has a combi flamer, a retinue of 5 celestians (no vet but both weapon slots filled) and an immolator with searchlight & smoke.

Finally, 3 Exorcists with searchlights.

…and that’s it. 1483pts.

So what would you recommend as the best spend for 17pts? Auspex for all and xtra armour for the immolator (total of 1498pts)? More stuff on the vehicles? Meltabombs for the canoness (although it grieves me to spend points on something that will only kill vehicles, hence evis in the squads)?

What do you reckon?

Drop the searchlights, that gives you 21pts spare. Get extra armour for your 3 exorcists and your immolator. You really should try and find 8 more points to give all your exorcists smoke launchers as well, they can be the difference between life and death.

Thanks for the response however the couple of things that you mention aren't necessarily the best options and I'll explain why.

Exorcists are the only form of heavy hitting long ranged firepower available to Sisters and even though they are reasonably priced for what they do they still represent a significant points sink for the force. With that being the case you absolutely need them to be firing for as many turns as possible to enable them to dish out as much damage as possible. With that in mind both of your suggestions go against this principle. I'll take the smoke first.

When a vehicle pops smoke you are making a trade between the vehicle being able to inflict damage to the vehicle having a better chance of taking damage. As I said before, exorcists need to fire and having a front armour of 13 gives them a good chance of being able to shrug off hits whilst forfilling their purpose on the table.

A mistake that I believe many make is tooling up exorcists to survive an entire game but due to their fearsome reputation this is rarely the case. I keep mine fairly vanilla because I know that points spent on exorcists tend to be wasted as they will suffer critical hits and for the most part will be out of the game by the start of turn 4. That said they will have achieved the target that I've set them.

As for searchlights the possiblity of Dawn of War deployment is 1/3 and for the first turn you are effectively prevented from firing due to nighfighting rules. 1pt per vehicle to get past this is a small price to pay for a first turn of fairly reliable firing, especially when there's an equally good chance that your opponent can't fire back.

So, 17pts is the count, no more, maybe slightly less. Any other offers?

The illuminating searchlight doesn't have to be on the shooting unit and they are especially bad on HS units that tend to be further from the target because of the need to spot using nightfight rules to illuminate.

Well said. Also, the illuminating unit becomes a target for everything in range because once its searchlight is on, enemy units do not need to pass a spotting check to see and shoot at it. If the Exorcist is close enough to use its searchlights to hit an enemy unit, the enemy is probably close enough to shoot back.

It is better to put searchlights on cheap vehicles that can be sacrificed, or that the enemy might decide to ignore. The best option would be Rhinos, but you don't seem to have any. (Updated Rhinos would have searchlights by default.)

.......and hence why they are on the vehicles that I do have. Little off topic guys, any more offers and reasons?

because you don't say what your immoly I will assume twin hvy flamers I would holy promethium....but will it be worth it?.... i feel Auspexes are only really worth it on hvy bolter retributors so not really worth it as you are not fielding them

heavy bolters with blessed ammo on the immoly is the only thing i can think of
