Power Fist or Melta Bombs?

I've been thinking lately, that instead of putting a Power Fist in every squad, wouldn't it be better to save twenty points and get Melta Bombs?

 

Pro Power Fist:

- More Attacks

- Power Weapon*

 

Power Fist Cons:

- Costs more than most CSM Troops.

- Initiative Penalty

 

Pro Melta Bomb:

- Same Strength as power fist.

- Lower cost compared to power fist.

Melta Bomb Cons:

- Not a power weapon.*

- Only one attack against vehicles.

 

*Note that you could get them a power weapon for 15 points and still be saving 5 points over a power fist.

 

It seems to me that with the exception of monstrous creatures, that getting melta bombs is a better use of points. Thoughts?

IIRC you can only use melta bombs on vehicles not troops, etc, so another con for bombs...

 

right now the only model i use with bombs is a CSM lord with wings, power weapon, and icon... kinda backs up where

i need him and gets demons/termies on the board as well

Power Fists are better in almost every situation you can imagine.

They squish MCs

They smash Dreadnoughts (remember you have to roll a 6 with 1 attack to Melta Bomb a Dread)

They have multiple attacks against AV10 rear armor which is often better than 1 Meltabomb.

They can be used against infantry unlike Grenades

 

Plus your basic infantry come standard with Krak Grenades, which is enough to destroy most armor and atleast threaten a Dreadnought.

 

The one time a Meltabomb is worthwhile is trying to assault AV14, where you can only glance it with a Power Fist. Of course if you just brought a Melta-Gun along, you could do the same thing but better.

 

Put another way, the Meltabomb is a backup weapon if you feel the urge to take a Power Weapon instead of a Power Fist (like your playing Noise Marines or something).

Meltabombs belong on HQ's that dont often pack powerfists. Aside from the random I5 champ with IoS/MoS that uses a power weapon with meltabombs costing 5 pts less then a powerfist when combined.

 

Fist on everything else normally, I would take one less model if it meant giving a powerfist to my champion instead of a power weapon. In one case for a 1750 deceleration league where starting with 2k and removing 250 pts for every fight (second level) I removed a marine that made sure I couldnt have a second meltagun just to keep that powerfist.

Remember, the fist provides at least 50% of the squads killing power. Power Weapon is nowhere near that. A power weapon champ doesn't even average 1 kill vs meqs. A fist does. And it threatens everything.

 

Its not quite that bad when comparing it just against MEQs.

On the charge a Power Fist averages 1.25 dead MEQs whereas a Power Weapons averages 1.0.

In combat its 0.83 vs 0.75 respectively.

So against just MEQs you're trading a slight increase in killing power against striking at I1.

 

Its all the other stuff that can assault you that really makes the Power Fist worthwhile.

 

 

To the OP: I just created a thread a few days ago about when its appropriate to use a Power Weapon. Long story short, its only better then a Power Fist in very select situations.

Melta Bomb Cons:

Meltabomb cons:

does nothing v MC's or anything but vehicles

1 chance to hit vehicles that moverd 6" on 4+, if vehicle moved more then 6" then 1 chance to hit only on 6. At least a PF gets 3 chances.

 

But really, relying on PF to take out vehicles is a poor plan, really you should have plenty of meltas and hvy weops for that.
