Vash113
Well the tournament was today and I must say it was the best run event I've ever been to without contest. The environment was so much more relaxed than other tournaments I've been too and the players were all generally friendly and showed a lot of sportsmanship and we got to raise about $1000 for charity so that was really cool too. Overall it was an awesome day but I gotta say a long one, started for me at 7:30 AM and I didn't get home till 9:20 PM. But it was most deffinitelly worth it. Played 4 rounds of 2000 point games and these were my resuls: Round 1: Hybrid Imperial Guard -Me: 14/14 KP, 2000 VP, 1/2 Obj -Him: 1/11 KP, ~200 VP, 0/2 Obj Result: Victory Round 2: Hybrid Tau -Me: 7/14 KP, 998 VP -Him: 7/11 KP, 1336 VP Result: Tie Round 3: Chaos Space Marines -Me: 4/11 KP, 917 VP, 0/4 Obj -Him: 3/11 KP, 918.5 VP, 0/4 Obj Result: Victory Round 4: Sisters of Battle -Me: 5/15 KP, 677 VP, 1/2 Obj -Him: 7/11 KP, 1371 VP, 1/2 Obj Result: Tie Wins: 2 Ties: 2 Defeats: 0 So not so bad, two wins and two ties is fine for me, considering I've never run mech wolves before they did great. And I got to talk to our Wolf Brother Keith and he did fairly well too so overall not a bad day for the Wolves. Coulda been better, but coulda been a lot worse. There were some canny opponents and some nice lists, little that was shockingly power gaming but strong fun lists were in abundance and many of the players were quite competent too. I just got really tired and sloppy in my last game against the Sisters. It started at 5:30 and I just made a ton of mistakes, everything from placing my Blood Claws wrong to dropping my troops out in range of flamers and plasma guns and just ugh it was really ugly and I'm shocked I was able to fall back swiftly to my objective and hide. Shamefull and very unwolfy of me but tactically necessary and it pulled the tie on objectives so I can hardly complain. Alright well I took a TON of pics but here are a few of the more interresting ones, showing my deploment and opponent each round and some cool and/or sad happenings. warboy
good work on getting all those pics, you really get a feel for how the battles played out. glad to hear the wolves fared so well against so many opponents, and even managed to fight through the fatigue for a draw. the best part is you looked so badass doing it (although, being the sons of Russ, it's hard NOT to look badass) i hope you complimented the chaos player on his use of "vintage" rhinos, that sells the idea of them using outdated SCIENCE! in a subtle yet classy way. Forseti
Good job brother! Was kinda surprised with the chaos army..Everything blood red, then out pour green troops! heh is a shame your camera makes your wolves look like ultramarines :/ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/175521-sgi-charity-tournament-summer-2009/#findComment-2074328 Share on other sites
Wolf Guard Nostromo
Good job brother! Was kinda surprised with the chaos army..Everything blood red, then out pour green troops! Agreed... what was that about!? Great report and some good results by the sound of it. 4 full games in a day is hard going, and it would take a better man than me to go through concentrated play like that without making a few tactical blunders :cuss . Impressive fund raising too, well done. Unfortunately no, I was too busy keeping my mouth shut to avoid coughing on cigar smoke and trying to wreck them. I actually immobolised two of them turn 1 and they rolled two 6's to repair on his round... needless to say it was frustrating. Good job brother! Was kinda surprised with the chaos army..Everything blood red, then out pour green troops! Blood Angel Rhinos and Nurgle-esque Chaos Marines, I guess he ran out of tanks and borrowed from another army. heh is a shame your camera makes your wolves look like ultramarines :/ Yea they did turn out rather more bluish than they're supposed to in those shots... odd. Great report and some good results by the sound of it. 4 full games in a day is hard going, and it would take a better man than me to go through concentrated play like that without making a few tactical blunders ;) . Impressive fund raising too, well done. Thanks and yea by the end I was tired and sore and hungry and that didn't help with my concentration. Still shoulda forseen the trouble but at least I managed to avoid total disaster hehe.... somehow. It was really unwolfy to sit there and hide behind the Raider but sometimes a tactical withdrawal is the only way to go and I found myself sitting there staring at 30 Odd surviving Sisters and 5 Wolves and I thought... they're good but not that good... time to leave. I'm just glad the Raider made it back to my Objective before getting immobolised. Vash113
Im glad you enjoyed yourself... now how did the fundraiser part work though? and what charity was it for? Worked like a run/walk for charity sort of thing, people can donate a certain ammount per win or just a straight donation and part of the entry fee went to charities too. There were 3 charities everyone could choose from "National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.,” “Catholic Relief Services,” “National Kidney Foundation.” An interresting concept, ultimately not a lot of money particularly divided 3 ways but hey better than nothing and maybe next time even more will be raised. Vash113
Nice job all around! Thanks. Well now I've had time to chill and think back the tournament did illustrate a few things tactically that proved interresting and I guess I should talk about em and I'll break em down by unit. Venerable Dreadnaught First off the Venerable Dreadnaught was a big advantage. The ability to force an opponent to re-roll the vehicle damage results was huge and I mean HUGE! It saved the Dread's hide almost a dozen times over the course of the day, many times results of 5 or 6 would re-roll as 1's or 2's and the extra armor made sure the Dread kept moving towards his squishy targets. In fact that durability let him hold up a whole unit of Chaos Terminators in round 3, survive 4 Railgun hits Round 2 and distract fully 90% of the Sisters army round 4 letting the Raider and my last scoring troops escape back to my objective and pull the tie. So overall he didn't really end up doing a lot of damage but he soaked it up nicely. Characters The Wolf Priest was definitely the MVP of all 4 rounds, he was the only model in the army not to die at least once and he held up under a ton of punishment. Like the Dread he wound up wiffing a lot and not doing much damage most of the time but he survived a lot, harassed a lot and helped keep the Blood Claws alive longer. The Wolf Lord did more damage and got more kills overall and was the bane of both the Tau, the Guard and the Chaos Marines. The Runic Armor though unliked by some was invaluable keeping both characters alive long after a Power Armored Character would have been killed, heck if they had been wearing Power Armor they would have been killed 6 or 7 times over instead of once for the Wolf Lord and not at all with the Wolf Priest. However the Runic Charms were useless because I well... forgot. They MIGHT have kept the Wolf Lord alive in round 2 and may have kept the Wolf Priest from being wounded in round 2 and denied my opponent 60-80 odd Victory Points but in general I just never remembered them and since that upgrade is likely going to be gone in the new Codex I think I'll just leave them off and save the 20 points for something else. The Land Raider The Crusader was a mixed bag, it got the Blood Claws to their destination pretty much 100% of the time but it's own guns generally did very little and were surprisingly lack luster. The Multi-Melta in particular either failed to hit or rolled snake eyes to damage almost every time and despite over a dozen close ranged shots the only tank it bagged the whole game was an Exorcist in the rear armor and it immobolized two Rhinos over the games but that's not a whole lot. It was only actually destroyed once by a Deep Striking unit of 3 Twin Melta Crisis Suits so that's not too shabby. It was expensive and I should probably leave the Storm Bolter off in future to save the points but the Extra Armor was extremely usefull for making sure the Blood Claws got to where they were going as reliably as possible despite the cost. The Rhinos The Rhinos were Rhinos, the Hunter-Killers though pricey and lackluster in the first two games really shined in the second two. One bagged a Rhino in Round 4 that killed 3 Sisters and wounded the Canoness, and in Round 3 they immobolized a Rhino and stunned another keeping my opponents mech army from moving at all. So I'm rather happy with how they worked, the eventually wound up getting blown up in Rounds 2 and 4 but they lasted pretty well overall. The Grey Hunters Well they were Grey Hunters, ok but not spectacular. In general they did their job though in future I really need to make sure to keep them inside the Rhinos until the oportune moment, early deployments in Rounds 2 and 4 saw them slaughtered, without the Assault Ramp of a Land Raider to provide the mobile Charge I need to be more carefull with them. Despite that however they in general held their own and did ok and their Melta Guns at least kept my opponents sweating when they got close to their armor. The Blood Claws Next to the Wolf Priest these guys were the best unit in the army, they killed tons and I mean TONS and though getting wiped out after a heroic last stand Round 2 and getting mauled in Rounds 3 and 4 they still dished out a whole lot of punishment and did a serious number to my opponents. They were so nasty in fact that the Sisters player redirected the one unit that could have captured my objective to deal with them and that gave me the opening to withdraw and secure it. 2 Power Weapons and 2 Power Fists also seemed a good combo, the Power Weapons accounted for way more kills but the Power Fists helped break open light armor and insta kill battlesuits. I was very pleased with these guys and I think the first order of buissiness for any future Tournaments is to throw in my other unit of these guys and maybe another Crusader to cary them. A bit cheesy perhaps but the Blood Claws really proved their worth many times over as hard to kill and hard hitting shock troops. The Wolf Scouts Another mixed bag, they were very usefull in several games. In Round 1 they did nothing and never came on the field. In Round 2 they showed up on Turn 2 in the nick of time to catch my Opponents missile pod suits and kill them all, then they caught the Broadsides and put them to the sword as well. In Round 3 they accounted for a Defiler and in Round 4 they actually managed to blow a weapon off of the Land Raider earning half points for it. While they didn't do stellar every time, they in general earned their points back, scared my opponents and threw a monkey wrench into their plans. The Long Fangs I dunno about these guys. Their heavy weapons did come in very handy, they did a number on my opponent round 3, helped beat up the Tau Round 2 and gunned down some Guard Round 1 but in Round 4 they just got cut down and they did get basically neutered after Turn 1 in Round 3. So overall they did ok but not great. I think in future I'm going to need to drop them. I'd be happier if I could put a Twin-Lascannon on the Dread to make up some of their anti tank but their points are just atrocious for the damage they did. I'd rather have a small Grey Hunter squad to hang back and hold Objectives. Conclusion I think in future I'll be droping the Long Fangs, Runic Charms, the Rhino Extra Armor and the LR Storm Bolter I could save 280 points, which could get me another smaller unit of Grey Hunters in a Rhino or Razorback to capture objectives or I may drop the Dreadnaught and/or the Wolf Scouts (even though they were VERY usefull) for another unit of Blood Claw in a Crusader with a Cheap Battle Leader. Vash113
The new tanks look sweet dude, and Im glad you managed to tie in the other 2 rounds. Next time you need to bring me along though, leave early if you have to :P Well I left my house at like 7:30, awake at 7 I dunno if I can do much earlier. :D Oh and the official ranking was: 21. Sean Keyser, Space Wolves: 1-3 ... 75% sportsmanship ... 59% victory points ... 59% kill points ... 4.43 rating I guess they broke ties down into KPs and then VPs or something though against the Chaos Marines I had more Kill Points than him but he had 1.5 more Victory points  . Oh well, still at least 1 win is better than nothing and I'm surprised I got such a high Sportsmanship score. Oh and this was the score of that Guard player who was such a bad opponent at the GW Springfield: 30. Philip Beardsley, Imperial Guard: 0-2 ... quit tourney early, 0's across :) :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/175521-sgi-charity-tournament-summer-2009/#findComment-2080218 Share on other sites
