command squad question

As far as I remember these specialists have their own statlines in C:SM and thus can't take upgrades as veterans. However, in pre-C:SM codices don't give different statlines for specialists (Honor Guard in the Blood Angels codex for example) and these specialists can still take upgrades. This will likely get ammended in new codex releases though.

Again, this is what I remember and likely wrong :P

And what about the Apothecary? Is he a Vet that can take, for example, a Plasmagun instead of his BoltPistol?

The Apothecary gets his own statline, and as such is not a "Veteran" in terms of upgrades; thus he is not elligible for upgrades.

Kinda stinks, if I could give one a storm shield I totally would.

Just read the other posts on my searchy, and found the answer ... but thanks thade.

The Apothecary cannot take upgrades that the Vets can. ... bummer.

Yeah, this is the whole reason I've kept with my vanguard and stayed away from the command squad. FNP is nice and all...but only five models and a max of four that I can upgrade...No matter how I cut it, the unit would take too many hits and everybody would be making saves.

Actually...

Perhaps I am under-estimating FNP. If I build the unit with 2-3 storm shields and then the other 1-2 vets with power swords (not sure I'd do the champ upgrade, but maybe) then when a hidden power weapon/fist or an IC hits the unit, I should be able to land most if not all of those hits on the storm shields (for invuln saves) then allocate the rest of the normal wounds over the unit which FNP would help with.

Now I kind of want to re-examine this again. Thanks for pokin my brain. :)

I personaly think the command squad makes a better shooty squad than a beaty squad. Melta/plasma/flamer spam and a fist. Generaly if you tool them for mellee you increase their cost by too much to be worth it, but 4 meltas and a drop pod is not that expensive. or a bunch of plasma and a transport. I frequently suggest a plasma spam command squad as the solution to monsterous creatures, it will bring alot of pain to TEQ also. Flamer spam (which definatly NEEDs a fist) can bring insane pain to a hoard.

Hey,sorry for necro-ing this thread but it seemed relevant enough to what I wanted to ask and I did not want to start a new one.

So,since the banner is a wargear item can the veteran that has it be equipped normally? For example with banner+power weapon+bolt pistol?

I mean the banner is huge but we assume it does not take up one of his hands, like he plants it while fighting or something.Am I correct?

sure. The banner bearer is still a veteran (unlike the champion or apothecary). My banner bearer has a powerfist, a meltagun, and the banner.
