Black armor for grey knights?

I've been playing my Knights for a long time, and since the color scheme was black when I started, that's what I painted them. They look good, and I have had no serious complaints over the years about the colors. Unfortunately, since I'm at work right now, I don't have any photos to share. Also remember though, they're your models, paint them how you like and have fun doing it!
Looking at the old IA for Gk's and Deathwatch......was wondering if anyone had painted their' GK'S up in the black paint scheme? If so pics would be great, thinking of trying that out

Check out the thread. davej37 came up with a very nice dark grey (almost black) colour scheme for his Grey Knights that is very good. So good, I am going to steal it (or at least use it for the basis of my painting scheme) when I finally get to my Knights. He includes his 'secret recipe' for the paints he used. It includes lots of pictures of various units. Enjoy.

If you look around, you can find a number of debates about that IA article and whether they should be black, dark grey, silver-grey or metallic grey. I favour the black/dark grey of the IA article plus the stylings of the armour in the article over GWs style and available miniatures.

If you are interested in following the IA article for the rest of the figures (both power armour and terminator armour), there are a couple of articles in the Librarium>Hobby>Modelling Articles on how to make plastic Grey Knights.

There are numerous threads on B&C alone about alternate Grey Knight colour schemes, red, green (yes green), and bronze for examples. I did find another thread about black GK but with red trim (e.g., helmet).

I have also seen several threads where metallic grey was used but was suitable subdued through the use of Inks (particularly blue) and washes (particularly black).

Enjoy!!

I've gone with a gun metal base with black inking/dark gold highlights with a brown wash. The purity seals are blood red with a brown wash and the parchment are bone brushed over dark brown and then washed in brown. Their tabards are a medium gray base with skull white lightly brushed over to retain shadowing. The Nemesis blades are wrapped in thin wire to model a lightning effect, which I intend to paint in a bluish hue (but haven't yet). I mounted my guys on resin bases ordered from Back-2-Bases (dungeon stones), but they are still primed black until I figure out a color scheme for the cobble stones that sets off the somber colors of the knights.

For my GKT's, all of their arms have been magnetized for swapping out weapons, which I'm currently only using with psycannons and incinerators (I have 3 psycan arms, and 1 each incin/stormbolter). My goal is to convert a bunch of thunderhammer/stormshield arms for easy swapping as needed. Unfortunately, I did not anticipate the weight and hardness of the pewter, which made drilling it out a chore, and has forced me to alignment add pins to assist with mounting the psycannons (everything else holds fine).

I have some crappy pictures I might add, from of the recent tournament I attended (and did poorly in; Damn You Orks!!!!).

I am more a fan of bright Grey knights as opposed to dark ones personally.

I think of grey knights more alone the lines of Paladins and that is why I paint their armouor "shinny" I also think of the shine off of their armour adding to the shrouding by blinding their foes.

I am a strong believer that if you like a colour scheme then you should stick to it because they are your miniatures, so research the options and go with what you like best :cuss

What Yuanti said. Tin Bitz under a smoke wash, worked up to Mithril Silver final highlights.

They also look more imposing on the field if dark, and this causes their livery to stand out. My Grey Knights are dark and heavily weathered metal with a huge variety of colourful but heavily weathered personal heraldry, livery, tabards and cloaks.

I take the opposite stance to Grimm Blade in that I find it unrealistic to run around in polished silver armour. Historically, knights were generally fairly vile men, though well-behaved at home and in front of superiors. If based on historical precedent, most knights painted their armour in a dark colour since it looked good even when covered in dirt, whereas bare metals had to be polished and shined regularly. The services of an armour polisher were extremely expensive. It wasn't until early guns started gaining ground in continental Europe that polished and gilt armour became more popular, and were already obsolete.

Either way, a dark metal with very bright highlights looks like heavy weathering and age. If armour was a dark metal to begin with then weathering burnishes the bright metal underneath, whereas if armour was a bright metal base then weathering causes heavy tarnishing to build up. Being a silver fetishist, the strong contrast between burnishing and tarnishing is the most attractive feature of the metal in question and it is emulated in the colour scheme I have applied.

I was planning to plan my Grey Knights using some Ral Partha Steel (metallic dark grey/black) I had from when they still existed. . But the pot dried out on me and I still have not gotten to the GKs. Need to find another paint similar to it. Any suggestions?

One nice thing I like about using a darker metalic scheme is that when I brush on some runic symbols using Mithral Silver for my Justicars and Brother Captains to denote Unguents of Warding, the brighter color will stand out without being overwhelming.

Freehand patterns emulating the fine detail on Grey Knights in the codex artwork?

Vallejo do some very nice gunmetal and oily steel colours you should check out.

I have been meaning to get some more Vallejos to replace the other (unnamed) paints I currently have. So far I have only looked at their Game Colors but with the new ones that correspond to GWs new Foundation, etc, I have more impetis to do so. But since there is no store nearby that carries them and the only places online I can find are across the border (I am in Canada), shipping can be a bitch.
