Slipping back down the slope

Lo all, long time lurker here, always liked checking up on how things were going with a hobby I left behind about 4 or 5 years ago now.

I thought I was out, what with work, getting married and having a kid, but having moved away from my other regular past-time of airsoft (just too damn hot for that in Vegas), figured I'd fill my extra time over the next couple of years with GW. Kind of wish I hadn't given away my Black Templars stuff to my cousins kid now, but he seems to making good use of it...

So, after much thought, I thought I'd start where I left off - Marines! And this time I'm working on my own chapter, having previously used Black Templars and Space Wolves. I'm determined to take a much more patient approach this time round, only buying a new unit once I've finished painting the last one, and only buying what I actually want to use rather than what looks shiny.

So, to begin with, the old favourite - Tactical Squad! These guys will be a kind of proof of concept for me, after playing around with the SM painter and having decided on a deep, dark red colour scheme with black details. My first victim will be the heavy weapons marine (carrying a missile launcher of course). After a couple hours playing with the new foundation Mechrite Red and Baal Red wash (new to me anyways), here's how he's looking so far.

Overall I'm happy, considering this is my first guy in so long. I'm going for a not-so-clean finish, hence why the red is darker is some patches. One thing I particularly liked when playing with the SM Painter is to leave the abdomen and neck ring black, to me it highlights my own idea of how armour is worn - the red chest piece is mounted over a black underlayer of armour.

First time I've used a colour like Scorpion Green for the eyes, was a bit worried I'd plaster it on a bit thick with it being such a lighter colour, but a dab of Skull White as a base layer for the eyes seems to have worked well. First time I've ever bothered with that little speck of white for reflection as well, think it worked out okay.

So, just the arms to go, then a decision on the basing. I figured I'd just grab some of that course sand that's so freely available around here, throw in a few bits of gravel and paint it Codex Grey followed by copious amounts of Badab Black wash. Leave a lighter tone of Codex Grey around the base, just to contrast everything, think it'll make the red pop out a bit more.

The only name I've come up with for my Chapter that I'm happy with - Reapers, using the white skull from the decal sheet as their Chapter symbology. It's related to my job here, let's see if anyone can figure out why... <hits post button and flinches in preparation of C&C>

Looks like a really good start!

Now lets see what more you can do. :)

I know what you mean about thinking you are out of the hobby due to work, a marriage and a kid.

I don't have any of those myself, but most of my gaming group has acquired them all, so now most of them are out.

Guess Im just a sort of Peter Pan. :P

Oh, and welcome back to the hobby! - You will find its a good, if expensive place to be :)

It looks really nice so far. I'm not normally a big fan of "stonework" details, but I think you've carried it off well.

PS - "Reapers"? You wouldn't happen to be an undertaker, would you?

I knew someone would go for undertaker, sorry Mortifis, too obvious! black babyjesus is pretty close to the mark, but his geography is off, Vegas is in Nevada.

As per your request Drago, a pic of the back end of a Reaper Marine:

Hmm, focus wouldn't play for some reason... I think I'm going to some detail work on the backpack, maybe do the skull in the same style as the aquila.

And you're right about the expense Graymantle, I was a bit shocked at some of the prices these days. That did improve slightly when I remembered I'm working in US Dollars instead of GBP these days.

Cheers for the comments all, maybe it'll help me get my butt in gear and finish him off!

Hah, lose some money in the Casino's recently Twin .44? I think that's the reference for Pit Boss anyways.

I was thinking of working the UAV thing into my Chapter, maybe some conversion work on a Land Speeder to make it a UAV? I dunno, it's all pipedreams atm...

Last time I walked into a casino I went in with $40 and walked out with $400 three hours later (it would have been $600 but I started losing like a madman) :D but not to sound like a tool, but UAV? Urban Assault Vehicle?

UAV means unmanned air vehicle if im not mistaken. And im not sure unmanned would work, the imperium doesnt seem to have that tech anymore. Maybe have it all run by a single servo-skull though all wired up?

ah alright. and yeah, I would doubt it because they would need one heck of a Machine Spirit to do so. And i don't think a servo skull would have the capacity to do that (might be wrong). plus, why would space marines need such a thing?

Let me guess you work at the Pirate show at the Tressure Island Casino. Your painting looks great, I am also just starting to try out the new fondation paints and washes they seem to work real well. I started a unit with black and yellow quarted. A off shoot of the Imperial fists.

Well, UAVs in todays technology are not autonomous, just controlled remotely. Perhaps by a techmarine nearby, but don't really think that idea is going anywhere. I'll just settle for my guys killing heretics and xenos scum then.

I wish I worked at the Pirate Show, that looks like loadsa fun!

They seem a little too Blood Angels or Blood Ravens at the moment, but probably only because there are no shoulderpads.

Not bad, the helmet is splotchy but you "have fluff for that"

All and all seems like a very good start.

Oh and yeah no UAV in the Imperium! They have no need for it. They have enough people "trillion trillion trillion, trillions of people actually" servitors, and chapter serfs to handle a job a Marine just wouldn't or need not do.

Have fun killing Xenos and Heretic scum, I know I will!

Yeah, the similarity to the Blood Ravens / Angels colour is something I need to work with the shoulderpads to distinguish. But then, any red colour scheme is going to be labelled as such (Sons of Orar amongst others).

I did have the thought to make the boot soles, kneepads, elbow joints and hands all black. The Reapers would see it as their duty to stain these parts (strike-faces if you will) red in battle with you know what. Any Reaper found unsuitably coloured after battle would be chastised. Not sure about that.

Well? I think that was a happy little accident to be honest. Whether I did it well will depend on if I can do the same thing 9 more times...

Funnily enough, I'm having some issues replicating the exact shade of red on the arms. I thought the foundation colour (Mechrite Red) wasn't going on too well when I did the body, never used them before. Came to do the arms, and perhaps I shook it up a little better, because it covered them really well. End result was a much brighter shade of red, which I'm working to tone down in line with the rest of the body.

This first guy is definitely helping me to straighten out little things like this though. I either have to water down the foundation layer (would that work, to give a less comprehensive coverage with the shade darkened by the undercoat?), or else just put layers of Blood Red directly onto the black undercoat. More experimentation required!

As a result, I'm concerned that the arms won't appear to be as good as the body, particularly when they're attached. Hopefully get him finished off tonight and see how it turns out!

Drago Solaris - Only just saw your comment on the backpack for some reason... - I think I will leave the skull, having played around with the stonework effect on the skull on the back of his right hand it doesn't really work - will be repainting it metallic I think. As for dirtying the exhausts, not a bad idea, will play with some Badab Black and see what I can do.

Well, I got the guy finished off last night, matched the red on the arms pretty well to the body. Glued him all together, took him into the garage to spray with some varnish, and that's where it went wrong.

Either I sprayed too much on one side, or I didn't shake the can well enough or something, but on the right side of his body and head the varnish has dried with a kind of dusty, greyed out look. I strongly suspect I may have sprayed too much. I'm going to try and correct the damage as much as I can, but I think this guy might be signed off as expendable losses as I try to refamiliarise myself with how the painting process works (particularly the varnishing stage!).

Well my first thought was maybe it was a little too warm in the garage, think I'll test it on some spares in there with just a light spray tonight, if it does it again I'll risk gassing the wife and try it in the air conditioned house.

Couldn't believe it, I was looking forward to getting him done and just after I sprayed it I saw it go all funny like that. KHAN!!!!
