Brother Loring
I really like the red you're creating and the eyes are some of the most stunning I've seen! Rosco151
Thanks Brother Loring, the red has been a bit of a concern along the way, between the first three guys I was really concerned that little differences in the way I applied the three layers would make for glaringly obvious shades, but overall it's all balanced out well. As for the eyes, I'm surprised at how many have commented on a good job there, they were never my strong point when I did this years ago and suddenly coming into this cold after so much time away I seem to have nailed a simple way of making them look good. However, one thing I've found there is that the Mk VI corvus helmet eyepieces are a lot harder to do well (the edges aren't so clearly defined). Having just batch-painted the remaining 7 marines eyes, I'm going to go back over 3 of them that I'm not happy with. Anyway, I've gone back over the black details after applying the red layers, all I've got to do now is paint the metallic parts, drybrush any stone details and then shade them all with Badab Black and sort the bases. Hoping I can finish these guys for the end of October, depends how the next week of night shifts leave me feeling in the day! A17roolz
Sorry just got into reading this thread and I'm liking what I'm seeing! I especially like the fact that they don't acknowledge the Primarchs or the First Founding of any spiritual or dogmatic relevance, it strikes up similar differences in real life beliefs (not going to mention any as examples just incase), I like those little subtle references that refer to real life, like the civilisations most Chapters are based on (Roman = Ultramarines, Norse = Space Wolves etc.). Excellent job, looking forward to seeing more :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/176370-slipping-back-down-the-slope/page/3/#findComment-2160668 Share on other sites
Alpha PTP
I thought I was out, what with work, getting married and having a kid, but having moved away from my other regular past-time of airsoft (just too damn hot for that in Vegas), figured I'd fill my extra time over the next couple of years with GW. You're never out when it comes to GW. I have tried to quit four or five times and play MMO's. It just doesn't happen. I have a girlfriend, a job, and college, and I still manage to get in two or so hours devoted to painting and modeling, and another hour or so on here. Even I know that is depressing. <_< I'm determined to take a much more patient approach this time round, only buying a new unit once I've finished painting the last one, and only buying what I actually want to use rather than what looks shiny. I tried that once, then I bought a company's worth of tactical marines and got another two squads of chaos marines. I have modeling ADD like most 40k players. Now, onto the model... I like the red, but I think it needs more contrast. I would buy the new (to you) Gyphonne Sepia and use that in the cracks. I would also use the Baddab Black wash in the recesses for even more depth. Give it a try on a test model. The washes GW produced have helped my painting by leaps and bounds. I bought a whole set after they came out. The eyes look pretty good, but it should be darker the closer you get to the white spot as seen here on the marine on the left: http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a160/Punchinellos_Bomb/All%20Hallows%20Guard%20Finished/AHGSquadI2Paintathon.jpg This is a model from my All Hallows Guard army that I painted three years ago. The metallics are crap, but that is besides the point. Notice how dark it gets towards the white dot. http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a160/Punchinellos_Bomb/All%20Hallows%20Guard%20Finished/AHGAssaultSquadII1Paintathon.jpg Here is another example as seen on the chest and belt jems. Rosco151
A17roolz, as far as the Chapter background goes, it's not so much that they don't acknowledge the Primarchs, they just don't have any links in their history or formation to any particular one. They do recognise the Emperor as the immensely powerful figure that he is/was, but also recognise that he was still human, albeit the pinnacle of the species. I'm still throwing ideas around in my head about the attitude and approach of the Chapter, and while I want to present them as a less dogmatic group, I won't abandon the religious aspect of all Space Marines, as then they wouldn't be marines. Rather, they are somewhat more pragmatic in their practice of their version of the Space Marine cult. For instance, rather than blindly quoting that the 'Emperor Protects' and trusting in Him to keep them from harm, they believe it is better that they watch out for themselves and let the Emperor concentrate on more important matters, like the protection of his continually-at-threat-of-being-horribly-killed regular human subjects. The Emperor raised them up above the rest of humanity to be their protectors, as far as the Reapers are concerned they are the protection of the Emperor that the rest of his subjects pray for. Alpha PTP, thanks for the advice on the inks and eyes, unfortunately I'm typing this on my work account and can't see the pics, so I'll reply further when I can get on my machine at home. Grokkit
Could I ask you what stages you do for your red because it looks fantastic! I really love some of the conversions and can't wait to see more!:) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/176370-slipping-back-down-the-slope/page/3/#findComment-2163536 Share on other sites
Rosco151
The red's fairly easy, no special tricks at all just making liberal use of the Baal Red Wash: Basecoat of Chaos Black Foundation layer of Mechrite Red Very slightly watered down layer of Blood Red From there I just apply fairly hefty washes with the Baal Red. 2 or 3 coats usually gets the job done, leaving plenty of time for it to dry between layers. Alpha PTP, those All Hallows Guard look very nice indeed. I have tried that gem/eye technique in the past but never worked out well for me, but it's definitely something I'd like to try and develop with my characters to make them stand out a little more. Rosco151
No problems Grokkit, and yeah, AlphaPTP's skill is somewhere pretty high above mine! Update! Been a while, seems like every time I try to log in here there's some kind of database error... The guys have had all their details filled in, just got to take care of some shading next: http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y106/Rosco151/IMG_5352.jpg Close-up: http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y106/Rosco151/IMG_5340.jpg Think I'm on track to finish the squad in the next week or so now, depends how much time I can spend on them of course... Rosco151
Finally getting somewhere near finished now, and can't believe how long this has taken! So, the painting is complete, the squad is assembled, all that's left is to finish the basing and decals. Til then: Sgt's combat squad http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y106/Rosco151/IMG_5360.jpg Support combat squad http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y106/Rosco151/IMG_5361.jpg The last 7 guys individually: Special weapons marine, kept all the options open here, including just giving him a bolter. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y106/Rosco151/IMG_5365.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y106/Rosco151/IMG_5371.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y106/Rosco151/IMG_5367.jpg Squad marksman http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y106/Rosco151/IMG_5370.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y106/Rosco151/IMG_5373.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y106/Rosco151/IMG_5375.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y106/Rosco151/IMG_5368.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/176370-slipping-back-down-the-slope/page/3/#findComment-2179516 Share on other sites

Brother Loring
Are the special weapons on the combat squad magnetised or do they just fit snuggly?? Nice work, keep it up! Rosco151
Atm, just fit snugly. Magnetising doesn't seem to be necessary here, the fit is quite solid, so that'll save some more work! Rosco151
Indeed, what about them? Not sure if you mean how I haven't based the last 7 guys yet (still waiting for their decals as well), or if you're asking what I've used for them? As for what I used, just grabbed a couple of handfuls of sand from the kids playpark round the corner when I took my daughter there. It's surprisingly good stuff for this purpose... Rosco151
I got ya, yeah just haven't gotten round to it yet. I should be able to find the time to have the bases and decals done by end of this week, on my current shift the only free time I have is whenever my daughter has her nap in the morning! Lord Noble
I love how this squad has been coming together. It looks as though you've a great handle (pun intended) on your painting. Rosco151
Cheers Lord Noble, and thanks to all for your excellent commentary and criticism so far, it's really been valuable and has made me glad to have begun this thread, at least for the additional motivation to get these guys done. Have already begun the prep work for the first half of my scout squad (picked up the sniper pack), will be messing with poses / parts and exploring some minor conversions before assembly and painting begins. I plan to have a ten-man scout squad, armament split between sniper rifles and a support weapon in one combat squad, with the sergeant leading the other half equipped with bolt pistols and combat blades. Haven't tried this split armament between combat squads before, and I'm interested to see if it will be effective... Rosco151
Thanks Darkblood, I am really happy with the way they turned out, I'm no great painter but I'm just happy that they turned out looking pretty solid in the overall scheme, hoping I can continue and churn out a consistent force. My next unit is Scouts, and I'm just figuring out how to keep the scheme basically similar, but with the differences that a scout unit entails (to me, not so obvious bright colours, etc...). Magnus Darkblood
Maybe reversing your scheme mostly black with red trim would work best for the scouts. Rosco151
That does seem to be the best way to go, I agree. Majority will be black, with some overlying details (chest armour plate, etc...) in the red. I'm going to try some camo pattern on the cloaks I think...
