Slipping back down the slope

Here's Demi-Squad Cuth disembarking from their Razorback:

I've done a little shading work on the recesses and details of the vehicle now, just got to smooth that work out, add some damage to the edges and then pick a name to go on the front.

The Razorback is finally finished! Only started it in January, how's that for procrastination?

Tried quite a few times to freehand the name on the front, but it just seems to be something I can't do well at all. I plan to revisit this vehicle when I get hold of some more paints, to drybrush some mud along the track housing and maybe add some damage on the edges, but for now it's done.

So my force so far:

Got my Captain to finish off and that's my 500 point force done. I think after him, I'll start on my Land Speeder...

Well, 3 months in an unpleasanthot, dry and dusty place has given me plenty of time to think about what I wanted to do with my Marines upon my return to civilisation / release into society.

I've got two troops choices finished, including a transport, but I still need to paint up a HQ choice for my minimum legal 500 point force. I've ummed and ah-ed about what to use, and while a Librarian has had some interesting results (tearing a whole Grey Hunters pack apart on his lonesome, more often than often he's ended up dead when he's spectacularly failed to use his powers successfully. I'll be going with a Captain then.

I've used the Gabriel Seth mini, liked it the first time I saw it, and wanted to use his chainsword as a Relic Blade. I also wanted a Storm Shield though, and I've been loath to use an actual shield since it would block a lot of the minis details (and realistically prevent him using the blade effectively). An idea hit me last night, that I like a lot: using the heraldry plates from my Terminators as 'mini-storm shields', attached to the forearms and leg armour, providing the storm shield effect, but spread across his body in the form of smaller plates.

As he is now (head replaced with LotD Sgt head - no helmetless marines in my Chapter!):

My first mock-up of the idea (additional plates on forearms and lower-legs):

Great little force you have Rosco!! Slowly my own painting and modeling is starting to come together, its nice to see an army come together as I'm building mine.

Welcome back from the suck. I know how fun that can be.

BTW, does the Niagara still suck??

Hey Khepera, you got ripped off by the same travel agent as well? The Niagara was usually one of the better DFACs while I was there, the Luxembourg was by far the worst! Far East was pretty good, but being so close to the poo pond you could really smell it when you came out. Flight Line DFAC was a dream, used to drive over there once a week for a morale boost!

Cheers for the comments guys, gives me some much needed motivation to spend time on The Reapers rather than Fallout: New Vegas in my spare time!

Oh yeah - Holy crap Pulse, those Star Lords of yours are looking pretty good, particularly impressed by the detail you've added to them along the seams and joints of the armour!

Liking those Sons of Malice as well GoosedaMoose, reminds me why I'm constantly tempted to get some chaos marines and go crazy chopping them up.

Captain Mick - nice work on the metallic armour of your UMs, looks pretty stylish!

Sgt Cuth has been re-armed, based on my recent games experience against Marines, Tyranids and Orks. The old storm bolter guy will find home in the Combat Squad I'll be prepping for use in any game I play against MEQ (my scouts just weren't proving effective in those ones).

Power fist and Plasma Pistol - this armament won me a couple of games - most notably against my mates Space Wolves where Cuth here and one other from his squad were last men standing after the Wolves reached my lines. He accounted for most of the Blood Claw Pack including the Wolf Guard leader.

Another possible addition to my captain before painting - I wanted him to have some ranged capability, but he can't carry anything in addition to his relic blade and storm shield.

However, he could have an Auxiliary Grenade Launcher attached to the Relic Blade:

Not sure if I'm happy with it at the moment, seems too bulky. I might just get rid of the main body and barrel and have the grenades attached, with some kind of slimmer barrel assembly. Need to play with this idea a bit more...

A long overdue update on Captain Morr, finally got round to basecoating the Mechrite Red, a thinned layer of Blood Red and then several Baal Red washes.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y106/Rosco151/IMG_7746.jpg

Ithink the arms need one or two more Baal-ings, to bring the Blood Red tone down to match the body, then I can black out the details and get to work on them. Ditched the Aux. Grenade Launcher idea in the end, just trying to decide what to do with the skull faceplate. Might give it the stone effect treatment to match the other Marines breastplates? Either that, or bare metal? I dunno, much deliberation to be had here...

Those are the obvious contenders yeah, need that contrast to make it stand out. I don't think bone or metal would provide the contrasted effect I want, and the metallic might prevent some of the detail from standing out.

Looks like white is the winner, no subtle shading or anything, just pure white with a few washes of Badab Black to define it. Not totally sure on that, will give it a go and see what I think I guess. Using white for the scrollwork on the chestplate and relic blade, the skull on the helmet, and the Purity Seals will provide some coordination so that it doesn't look out of place as well.

The other question linked to this would be the colour of the eyepieces. The green colour is a unifying theme for the force, with the optics on weaponry and vehicles and the eyepieces on my power-armoured marines all being green. I'm not convinced how that'll look with the white mask. Yet again, we'll see.

Nothing done on the Captain since last time. To assist in my lack of progress, wifey got me something for Valentines Day:

Bless her, true love is jump packs and chainswords! Only 4 more guys to put together. I think I'll be putting more effort into making these guys a bit more customised than the Tactical Squad. With the Sgt here, I've used the Devestator Sgts chainsword arm, shaved a little off the armpit to bring the arm into a forwards pointing position than the "Hiya!" wave it would have been. I've made his pose lean a little more forwards by shaving off some of the sole of his boot under the toes. I also plan to add grenades and equipment pouches to these guys, maybe the odd melta-bomb. I've never bothered with those bits before, but I reckon it'll add some worthwhile detail.

A quick update on my Captain - some work done on the head

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y106/Rosco151/IMG_7782.jpg

Not the best picture, under the kitchen lights in the evening, and I've since done some light touch-up work to correct some things that became apparent when I looked at the close-ups. Better picture tomorrow in daylight! However, I'm happy with it, the eyepieces in particular as well as that high-contrast, stylised-white-bone appearance I wanted.

These boys here? They're going to make this a bad day for anyone in front of them.

The 1st half of my (eventual) ten man assault squad. Whenever I've collected Marines (3 armies over the last 18 years), Jump Pack Assault Squads have always embodied my favourite aspect. 7-foot genetically modified killing machines encased in arcane power armour with weapons that inflict horrific injury and death? Well that's bad enough, but what about when they come screaming out of the sky at you with chainswords? Emperor, yes, that's the stuff.

The captains helmet looks good. I think the eyes could use a bit more of a dark green to light green blend though, right now that are just light green and lack depth. I'm liking the progress, though.

I think the Captains eyes have suffered from poor photography and lighting - the eyes are painted Scorpion Green with Badab Black around the outer rim and bled into the forward corner. A speck of white was applied to the outer corners. There is a graduation, but it's not as apparent as it should be from these pictures. The intention was for them to appear brighter than the rank and file guys. Hopefully this'll come across once I've finished the entire piece and take a full-body picture in daylight.

Something a little different in this post, been building up my collection of scenery since Christmas and thought it was time I got around to painting some of it:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y106/Rosco151/IMG_7790.jpg

First time I've used static grass, and I really like the stuff. Beforehand all I ever had was the little plastic flecks, which did the job for sure, but this static grass just looks WAY more realistic.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y106/Rosco151/IMG_7792.jpg

You can almost see the blades of grass swaying with the wind...
