Battle Report

Recommended Posts

So, now I have my camera sorted out I thought I'd post a battle report... recent planetstrike defence game against a chaos force - 1.5k.

We decided to try a rules variation... 3 Objectives (the bastion, interceptor gun and Comms relay) but no firestorm, 4 strategem points for the attacker and 2 for the defender...

I used my troop heavy standard SW list:

Rune Priest - SS, FB

Battle Leader - SS, FB

11 Blood Claws - 3 Fists

11 Blood Claws - 3 Fists

6 Grey Hunters - melta and TLLC Razorback

6 Grey Hunters - melta and TLLC Razorback

6 Grey Hunters - plasmagun and HB Razorback

6 Grey Hunters - plasmagun

4 Long Fangs and Leader

Whirlwind

Chaos Force:

Abaddon

5 Raptors

5 Terminators

7 Bezerkers

7 MoN Chaos Marines in rhino

9 Tsons inc sorceror in rhino

Deployment:

I deployed fairly standard considering the terrain, ringing my wagons and knowing there would be trickery but no firestorm. The two TLLC razorbacks squads were in reserve.

CSM Turn 1:

The Raptors mishap and return to their gods, the bezerkers deep strike and find a minefield waiting for them while Abaddon and his terminators annihilate the Grey Hunters in front of them. The MoN rhino rushes forward and pops smoke.

SW Turn 1:

The Long Fangs pop the MoN csm rhino and the Blood Claws do the characterful but slightly reckless thing and charge Abaddon. The combat is bloody with the despoiler edging the combat 8-7, but it would continue next turn. The Space wolves reinforcements arrive and kill a bezerker as they close range.

CSM Turn 2:

The Tsons rhino arrive and pushes forward and the MoN marines join the Abaddon/Blood Claw combat. This is again bloody with Abaddon and the WGBL exchanging blows, but Nostromo's shield weathers the storm and he knocks another wound off the Despoiler before holding his ground until next turn.

SW Turn 2:

The SW reinforcements and static firepower reduce the Tsons numbers and finish off the remaining Bezerkers who were completely undone by the minefield strategem slowing them down. Abaddon finally kills Nostromo. Just. I failed 1 save but Abaddon's S8 attacks meant that was enough.

CSM Turn 3:

The Tsons, Abaddon and the MoN squad gang up on the remaining BCs and Rune Priest. The combat is close but my rolls for the Rune Priest are awful, compounded by the subsequent failed leadership test and run down. At least Abaddon only has 1 wound left...

SW Turn 3:

The combined firepower of the SWs kills most of the remaining MoN marines. T5 makes such a difference.

CSM Turn 4:

Movement but nothing else...

SW Turn 4:

Everything unloads on Abaddon whos MoN boduyguards die before a TLLC finally forces the Despoiler back to his orbiting spacecraft (apparently :( )

Turn 5:

The remaining Tsons kill a couple of Grey Hunters but die in the answering mass firepower leaving the Space Wolves in control of the field!

I was pretty lucky with my strategems both proving very effective (the minefield basically stranded the bezerkers in the open for 2 player turns and killed at least 3 of them while the long Fangs ammunition store allowed them to re-roll their misses - handy) and the raptors, who were pretty tooled up and I would have struggled to deal with, mishapping to their doom (wow, me and Adrian are really bad with mishap rolls... Our last 4 mishaps have all killed squads outright with the dreaded 1 or 2).

Good game though - the combats were fantastic and I felt I was unlucky to have to resort to killing Abaddon with ranged weapons... He is a beast though, he and his changing bodyguard killed 22 Blood Claws, 6 Grey Hunters and both my ICs in CC - his I6 is key. Ultimately, I won the game on attrition... the CSMs just ran out of models and I had lots of troops - small squads but tactical flexibility - in KPs it was very even.

I'll post the attack tommorrow. Probably :RTBBB:

Congrats, sounds like a well played battle. Yeah, the Raptors not being on the table definatley helped you out A LOT, but Abbadon is always a pain. The only successful way I've seen him taken out quickly was in two separate games of Apoc, he threw a void grenade which scattered back on top of him.....whoops :(

Have an ale for a fine victory!

yeah defo was a great game! 4+ inv saves dont like to save people, but EW does a fantastic job for soaking up ID shots.

Also i blame the loss on a cheesey beard list ;)

Cheesey beard list? I had 6 troop choices... AND NO ABADDON :P

I think your raptors got stuck in your own hypocrisy

Great battle report and congrats on the win. The only thing that stuck me funny is you said the bloodclaws were run down. With the errata to the Space Wolf ATSKNF, they would not have been wiped out.

Thats true, but I have always regarded both Blood Claws and Grey Hunters relatively cheap price (for what they are) as reflective of the fact they were of the generation before ATSKNF. Let me be clear, you are right, I'm not debating it. In the context of the game, I think it would have changed very little as it would have been 4 models v I6 Abaddon with 7. Ugly at best.

Well spotted though. I look forward to a time, known as Ragnarok (or October :P ) when errata are a thing of the past. Briefly :)
