Anyone using Foundation paints?

Alright, here's the deal. I have heard a lot of ppl say that foundation paints are good, and in my store they are quite a lot cheaper than usual GW paints. Therefore I have been searching this site for a good SW recepie using foundation paints, but to no avail. Maybe I havent looked everywhere, but I hope that if there is anyone who uses mainly foundation in his/her SW recepie, that person would be kind to me, and post it here. Pics also please.

Even if you just use some foundation and some GW, please tell me. I need them for armour and pelts mainly.

Thx.

- Natanael.

ps. sorry for my english. not a native speaker. ds.

Your foundation paints are cheaper? Interesting. Unfortunately I cannot aid you in your quest because I used Fenris grey onc and the effect was terrible and so stuck to regular shadow grey.

Fenris grey was awful? I tested it on a mini and found it was a great alternative and was actually easier to work with. Due to the fact you need less layers etc.

It's slightly darker but who cares, could hardly notice it myself. Only when you really put it next to a mini that you can tell, but only just

Well my Ragnar model came out purple, which was not as intended. So either I did something wrong or had a bad pot of paint.

Oh yes. Purple is definitely wrong.

Probably a bad pot.

That was what put me off, it was a dark purple which really confused me because I know GW have had problems with blue and grey but purple is definitely purple which put me off foundation paints. Might have to try another pot sometime though, they any good for airbrushing?

The key with them I have found is to treat them completely differently than standard paints. You should not be using them as your actual layers of paint.

Thier best use is as a nice even basecoat for notoriously thin and annoying colors(ie. yellow red) or when you are trying to paint one color over something much darker that would normally show through.

So in my opinion they are awesome paints but any attempt to use them stand-alone as opposed to being a useful addition to your paints won't end well. Hope this helped :D

I am currently using Fen Grey as my base coat on my army, dont even have to prime the models! Covers great and using Space Wolf Grey to hi-lite or drybrush over the edges works great. I like it better than the standard grey colors. I mean hey we are the Space Wolves and have Space Wolf Grey & Fenris Grey Foundation, they are named for our chapter so I use them, I also use Shadow grey & Ice Blue, the latter being my company color.

I have started using Fenris Grey as my first coat as well, its a fantastic Base coat. Nice, smooth, one coat coverage.

I have posted my own Space Wolf armor recipe before, but since you asked...

Prime Black

1. Base Coat with Fenris Grey

2. Coat of Shadow Grey

3. 2 parts Shadow Grey, 1 part Space Wolves Grey (1st highlight, extremely wide)

4. 50/50 mix Shadow Grey and Space Wolves Grey (2nd hightlight)

5. 2 parts Space Wolves Grey, 1 part Shadow Grey (3rd highlight)

6. a sharp edge highlight with Space Wolves grey

7. For characters a skull white highlight at extreme high edges

you can check out my Gallery (linked in my sig) for examples if you like.

Sorry littlbitz, I've been beating Max over his head about the "saga of the highlights" and I think that stubborn SW skull is beginning to crack. :o

For those being shy doing bitz's recipe it does a little more time but the practice is worth it. And for me, even though I am not getting the lines right, they still look way better than any attempts prior.

i use foundation paint for my wolves

i use 4 part adeptus battlegrey, 2 parts regal blue and 1 part chaos black as the basecoat.

i then give a wash or devlan mud/badab black to shade

then highlight by adding fortress grey into the base mix

you should get a result similar to this

Thx a lot, brothers. This really helps. I was not expecting that many answers

@ Wolfbrother Thrarne - thx for the tips. Will try to use it just as base, and as the "all-over" paint.

@ littlbitz - been admiring your work for years. But you stick with the usual paints for highlight and such? I find it so hard to get the right amounths (sp?) of them, since you cant just take "drops" of it. Any tip there? Also, i second Max about the highlights. That would be great. Feel free to post it here if you dont want to make another thread.

@ stinkenheim - great looking models. Seems pretty simple and effective! I will have to give this a try. My only concern would be them being to blue. Is it the pic, or are they like that for real? Gonna try it anyway.

Thanks Nat!

Mixing as you go is too much like work Nat, and besides, I may not get the highlight the same way a second time.

I pre-mix my pots and mark them. Much easier that way, and it keeps my army consistent, I've been doing it that way for quite a few years now.

ok this is going to probably be the weirdest post here but here i go.

i use a grey or black prime just 'cause i like them. then i use fenris grey. to me it adds the dark effect i like to all the recessed places on the model. the i actually use adeptus battlegrey ove it and where i want red i use mechinte(spelling?) red. the all i have to do is a light coat of the red gore and codex grey. well of course i still have yellows, whites, flesh colors, etc.
