Battle Report 20/8/09

Recommended Posts

So, going on from my post report yesterday, we swapped roles and played the game again on the same scenery/rules etc.

To reiterate the forces, my wolves:

Rune Priest - SS, FB

Battle Leader - SS, FB

11 Blood Claws - 3 Fists

11 Blood Claws - 3 Fists

6 Grey Hunters - melta and TLLC Razorback

6 Grey Hunters - melta and TLLC Razorback

6 Grey Hunters - plasmagun and HB Razorback

6 Grey Hunters - plasmagun

4 Long Fangs and Leader

Whirlwind

Chaos Force:

Abaddon

5 Raptors

5 Terminators

7 Bezerkers

7 MoN Chaos Marines in rhino

9 Tsons inc sorceror in rhino

Deployment:

Self expanatory... Abaddon decided he didn't need to have reserves and planted himself between the two external objectives - not good...

Space Wolves Turn 1:

I used teleport barrage on the Bezerkers in the bastion and killed 4. Much of the wolves arrive. My razorback immobilises the Tson rhino, but everything else was fairly useless.

Chaos Turn 1:

The raptors move towards the lonely looking Grey Hunters whose fire had been so ineffective, and their assault fire makes them run (out of charge range).

Annoyingly, the Tsons rhino repairs itself making my fire last turn completely pointless. The MoN squad and Bezerkers charge the Blood Claws that scattered safely with deep strike - the combat goes badly for the wolves and they run, outdistancing the pursuers.

Space Wolves Turn 2:

Both my broken squads rally, but otherwise the turn is a write off... my reinforcement gunline does nothing and the 2nd Blood Claws and WGBL fail to turn up.

Chaos Turn 2:

The raptors finish off the Grey Hunters who ran last turn while Abaddon continues to burble around in the cover waiting for his chance.

Space Wolves Turn 3:

The Blood Claws scatter in safely (I took the 'forward observer' strategem and it saved all 3 of my deep strike units) but my shooting again proves ineffective. Sigh. I did mange to destroy the MoN squads rhino (the central one) but now it just provided more cover  . I was being pretty indecisive at this point, but Abaddon in cover was going to be no picnic.

Chaos Turn 3:

The Bezerkers do the characterful thing and charge the exposed Rune Preist and remaining claws, and justify the move by killing them - Aargh.

Space Wolves Turn 4:

The remaining Bezerker is killed by my WGBL - I did him the honour of charging him after he had killed my Rune Preist, and while this was tactically stupid it was (slightly) vindicated by my WGBL soundly pummeling him with his Frost Blade. The rest of my force consolidated towards the central area.

Chaos Turn 4:

The terminators knocked the Heavy Bolter off the razorback, but otherwise the stalemate continued. The raptors jumped into the central cover area.

Space Wolves Turn 5:

The Long Fangs break the raptors who run into the middle of my force! Again, the chaos force ignores my shooting like the buzzing of flies. I unloaded two squads of Grey Hunters to add to the fire, but they kill a combined single terminator.

Chaos Turn 5:

Having committed to some rapid fire last turn and achieved nothing, my Space Wolves took a pummeling. Abaddon charged and wiped out 1 Grey Hunter squad while the Tsons unloaded from their 'invincible' rhino and AP3 boltered the others to death. The Raptors rallied, and would now be an annoyance. The dice roll means the game continues, much to my relief as I am close to but control none of the objectives.

Space Wolves Turn 6:

The Space Wolves claim two objectives: the Blood Claws on one and the remaining Grey Hunters occupy the empty bastion. The last Grey Hunter from the Tsoned squad kills a raptor while everything else fires at Abaddon and the termies, killing two and wounding Abaddon twice.

Chaos Turn 6:

Realising they cannot claim back either objective held by the wolves (good old difficult terrain saved me  ), the chaos force charge. Abaddon nukes a razorback, the raptors destroy the whirlwind and the Tsons finish off the last Grey Hunter.

The game ends with the Space Wolves holding 2 objectives and the CSMs none (they had charged off the one they had held all game when they realised the game was lost). My force was in tatters and I got the best possible roll for game end. In terms of remaining forces, the CSMs had a full squad of Tsons, Abaddon and his two remaining bodyguard and several raptors while I hid behind my two objectives with my remaining forces, none of whom could take on the Despoiler. Hardly the stuff of legends but a win nevertheless. As I predicted, Abaddon proved almost impossible to remove from the ruined building area and I ultimately managed to stalemate him at that end while I took the other two objectives. In short, I was very lucky.

I dont think you were very lucky at all. You used your numerical advantage to the fullest, and managed to keep abbadon in the ruins where he couldnt hop out and decimate the rest of your force. I think you played it soundly, and it would have been nigh on suicidal to charge abby w/ his termie escort while they were sitting in the ruins. Keepin volume of fire on him forced him to think twice about heading out of cover, and that won the game for you. Inadvertently or not, that was played just right, as was drawing the scoring units out of thier objectives and keeping them occupied so you could use your superior numbers to swoop in later in the game.
