[WIP] Sons of Orar log.

[ I've continued adding to my force and mixed up a batch of custom red paint too, I hope you enjoy looking at my blog :) ]

Hey guys, just here to ask a little advice for my new colour scheme. I really like the Sons Of Orar colours, but I find red really difficult to pull off smoothly. How do you think it looks and how do you guys get it to look, well less dull?

What do you think of the white and red overall?

Aagh! Here I am trying to paint MY sons of orar, totally failing, and everyone keeps posting their great sons of orar!! ;)

I think you did a really good job of the red and white, it's nice and bright! White is a real pain in the neck... and what do you mean by "dull", it looks great to me... maybe you should put some highlights if you want?

edit: forgot to ask how you did it...

I think the red looks quite dull, but it doesn't show in the pictures so much.

Thankyou for the comments though, it's much appreciated ;) And I just added a new layer of highlights, i'll post those later.

As for how I did it, well bear in mind before I list the method, that it's taken around 4 hours to that stage.

For the red:

- Black Basecoat

- Mechrite Red 50/50 watered down.

- Baal Red wash.

- 4 - 5 layers (it varied in different areas to get the shades even) of watered down Blood Red.

- (Although not in this picture, i've just added) 60-40 mix of Blood Red and Blazing Orange, as a highlight.

For the White:

- Black Basecoat

- Shadow Grey

- Shadow Grey mixed with Skull White

- Repeat above step with higher amounts of Skull White added until you reach pure white (I did about 8 layers).

Is that helpful at all?

Hmm swamp, I like that idea.

I've just been looking around at basing tutorials and found a nice half cobbled, half dirt bases that I might try out, just need to get hold of some plasticard.

I wouldn't call that red dull. Blood red is very vibrant and you've pulled it off well. The only 'problem' I see with your method is that the blood red is awfully hard to get even coverage with. On my Sons of Orar I use small amounts of bubonic brown with mechrite to highlight the red. this has better coverage than blood red. Looking good so far though, keep it up. ;)

  • 3 weeks later...

Hey again guys, been on holiday for the past two weeks, so nothing done, but over the past two days i've been working on my first Sons Of Orar Dreadnought.

He's not 100% yet, but what do you guys think so far?

Also my armless Terminator ;)

His arms are painted, just not finished with him yet lol.

I used a different technique for painting the white on the Dreadnought and the Terminator, I used codex grey instead of Shadow for the base, I think it blends better to be honest.

Very nice models, I like the scheme you've used for the red and white, it's simple but effective. I'd vote for stone coloured on the crux terminatus, and probably some urban camo on the sniper scouts, I think the blue/grey needs breaking up a little. Excellently painted though.

You have a nice start to an army, and I genuinely like your color scheme.

That being said, you need to shave down the mold lines on your models. If you don't have a set of modeling files, I would highly suggest buying some. When I see mold lines on models, all I can think of are those pre-painted models that companies pump out. Take your time with your army, and you'll be more satisfied later on. As I have learned, when your skills as a modeler improve, and you look back on your older models, you'll see stuff like that and it drives you nuts. Then again, that's me.

Your black-lining needs some work as well. For a while I just used a shaved down 005 black Micron pen to start my black lining, then touch it up later after it dries. That was many moons ago for me, but give it a try. It might work out for you. I also used to use it on scroll work.

Last, but certainly not least, you need to water down your paints. They look a tad thick in some spots, but sometimes the cameras lie. I know how it is.

Just trying to help, mate. Keep up the good work.

Thankyou for all of your comments, I shall take it all on board. I just bought a set of files a few days ago, so hopefully mould lines shouldn't be an issue anymore.

I do thin my paints down, but I do admit some spots looks thick, and i'm not sure why?

But now i've been working on my first ever Rhino. It's not quite finished yet, I really want to try some freehand but i'm scared i'll mess it up.

Btw if anybody is wondering I have mixed up some custom red now, and made 3 40ML pots of it, now consisting of a mix of 3:1:1 of Blood Red, Red Gore and Scorched Brown.

Here's a tip if you're afriad of killing a paintjob with freehand:

Seal it with a coat of Testor's Dullcote before you begin.

The dried Dullcote allows you to "wipe off" any messed up freehand with a moist brush. The paint won't penetrate the sealer to muss up your red, and you can just wipe it away before it sets. If the coat of sealer isn't 100% perfect, you can still remove almost all ofthe freehand paint, and just touch up the remaining specks lightly with your red.
