Dreams of my BoLScon

So I played in my very first tournament this past weekend, and it was BoLScon. I spoke with some of the guys that came from all over the US that play alot of tournaments all over, and they said the competition was very hard, so I guess I shouldn't feel too bad about my record of 3 wins and 4 losses. (1 win and 2 losses in the winners bracket on Sunday). Especially seeing as I could have very easily scored 2 draws if I had been paying attention and hadn't got flustered. Oh well. 6 of my 7 opponents were awesome guys. The last one threw a bit of a tantrum.

Without further ado, this is what I brought. May not be super competitive, but its what I had.

Please post Pros/Cons about the tournament, and any event that happened that may stand out

<_<

Well I can't say enough how well the tournament ran. BoLS reported that they got 15 minutes behind schedule at one point but I was surprised to hear that I thought the most they got behind was 10 minutes top.

The hotel they picked, was really nice. The rooms were listed at $99 for 2 doubles, but I thought someone told me they got their rooms for less than that. We had a HUGE room to play in and I believe there were about 50-55 tables set up to play. Their terrain was awesome, very cohesive, and all of the "woods" had bases so the "trees" could be moved so your troops could move through the terrain easier. There were bastions and aegis defense lines on some of the tables, and everything was painted well. The terrain for the Narrative tracks was truly amazing. This piece in particular, which was probably about 3 feet tall. They had a copy of Space Hulk there, and had games going on, and they had a GW guy there and he was painting some of the Space Hulk minis.

In my opinion, as a total n00b (I figured out that roughly 1/3 of all of my 40k games were played at BoLScon last weekend) the schedule was pretty rough. We started at 9am and played 4, two-hour games with 30 minutes between games and a one-hour lunch break on Saturday. On Sunday, we started at 8am, and played 3 games on the same schedule. I tell you I was mind-numb by the end, and Monday morning, my feet, hamstrings, lower back and shoulders were sore. One of the other things about the schedule is that we were so busy we didn't get a chance to do anything else. There was a GW dude there, and I never got to go talk to him. They had Space Hulk there and I would have totally played if I had the time (there was open gaming afterwards on Saturday, but I was too tired to play). I also would have spent more time with the vendors.

The armies ranged from magnificent, to "ugh." I thought my wolves were pretty plain but I would say there were in the upper-mid range of the pack, although some of the armies were so nice they made me want to melt my army and start over. I did have some very nice complements on them, and of the 3 Space Wolf armies, mine were the only ones fully painted.

As I said, 6 of 7 guys were awesome. My first opponent was from Phoenix with a semi-painted SM army with Pedro Cantor. He said it was his first tourny, but he played REALLY well. Knew the rules REALLY well. Second guy was from Austin like me. Played Sisters that were sorta hodge-podge painted. He was super nice, and kicked one of my friends butt as well as mine. Third guy was one the guys I went to he con with and his Eldar. Last guy was the one that threw the fit. I dont remember where he was from, but he was playing White scars, and was geting pissed because he was being surpised by rules from the SM codex like, a Land Raider can move 12 and fire a lascannon with PotMS. A LRC can hold up to 16 dudes in it. Etc etc etc. But the straw that broke the camels back was when his Whirlwind was partialy obscured by my LRC but I could still see more than 1/2 of it from the Lascannon sponson from the Landraider. I shot and hit it, but he didnt let me roll for pen or damage before he picked it up and tossed it into his box. For the rest of the fight, every time I asked him for a judgement call, "I" felt he called it against me, "is there line of sight?" "no." "Does that templet cover 5 or 6 dudes?" "It covers 4." I didn't push it because I was eating his forces for lunch <shrug>.

Second day I was put in the winners bracket and got my ass handed to me by two Chaos armies, Nurgle and Khorn. The Nurgle army can be seen here. The Khorne army had LED lights in all the rhinos, the LR and the Soul Grinder (which stood in for a defiler). The Nurgle dude was from Oklahoma, and was quite possibly the nicest guy I played, and the Khorne guy was from Virginia and was the only guy that gave the one from OK a run for the "nicest guy I played." The last guy on Sunday was a kid playing nids, and I really couldnt do anything wrong. My Grey hunters were sitting behind an Aegis Defense line and got assaulted by two units of close combat gaunts (cant remember if they are called torma- or hormaguants) on two different turns and ate them both for lunch. My big squad of BCs ate a carnifex and a flyrant. And my VenDread charged a broodlord with about 1000 genestealers and held them off for 3 full turns. He finally died, by losing both arms and double immobilized.

At this point in time, I am 99% sure I am going next year, and JWolf has told that they are considering a "easier" track for us n00bs. That would make it a no-brainer for me.

I hope this answers your questions. If you have anything specific let me know.

Hey Pidge there is a tournament @ Dragon's Lair this Saturday. It is a partner tournament (1500pts for each player)and will go 5 rounds. It should be a lot of fun. Pairing will be made randomly. So, you don't need a partner. C'mon out if you're free. Dice roll @11am.

......Oh and heard about the White Scars guy.

I absolutely LOVE the look of that nurgle force. The Plague-monk thing is magnificent, and the terrain theyre on is pretty top notch. :tu:

Im glad to hear you had a good time at Bolscon. Never been to it myself, but if it was about 1k miles closer I think I might have to make the road trip. Very cool.
