Fenrisian scenery

I have been in the process of making a table for a LONG time. I have a basic 4x4, was originally going to be a cityscape, but getting back into space wolves, i have decided to make it a little icy ;) . So far the table has a little waterfront in one corner, a medium sized crater near the center, and a nice hill on one side with a stream. The table itself is foam on top of a wooden frame. the foam has been primed, and given sand, so now i am spray painting it an icy blue, and giving the impression of snow later. I have multiple questions.

First off, if any of you have icy terrain, i would greatly appreciate your pictures, as i am looking for inspiration.

Second, i couldn't help but have the thought of putting the very outskirts of the fang on a table edge. I know this sounds far off on a 4x4, but i couldn't help myself :P any general comments or suggestions on this would be great

Third, should I use actual GW snow, or just drybrush white over the icy blue it is currently being spray painted in... or possibly a mixture between the two?

Last but not least, i have made an icy rock spire as an experiment, and also have trees, and GD buildings which i have been using for terrain on the table. I plan on making more rock spires, but is there anything i should have? If you have any ideas, please help out here :P

Anyways, thanks for any help you can provide, whether it be pics, links, anything. I will take pictures as it stands tonight or tomorrow morning, so i will post them, as my table's description might be confusing . Anyway, thanks in advance, and help yourself to a nice cold ale for reading this :D

the road will be covered up, as well as the rest of the table being spray painted, hill included. the near left corner is going to be a waterfront that i will fill with resin, possibly doing the same to the crater. Any comments appreciated. Cheers

lol yeah it is kinda barren thats why i'm asking for some help  . At the moment, when i play with my brother and my friends on this table, We put some buildings on it that i got for FREE at GD Baltimore. Which brings me to ask why some people don't like gamesdays. you get your moneys' worth and more back with all the free stuff. anyway... to stay on topic on my own topic :D , Any avice, suggestions, thoughts, ideas, or anything of that nature would greatly be appreciated ;) . Cheers
Depending upon the depth of the foam you could cut some crevasses in that would break up areas of the table and lead to some interesting tactical options. ie. jumpers and skimmers being able to traverse them but land based things could not. Also you should rough up the edges of that crater as it looks more like the foot of gork has struck than an explosions crater. looking good so far though ;)
Here is a good guide on building a table, tho it's a volcanic one instead of snow/ice :/ Although you could just replace the lava with either ice, water or a chasm or something. Could even do fun things like making a frozen lake, models walking on the ice count as difficult terrain, cuz if they move too fast it can break or whatever while making it so only lighter vehicles/skimmers can cross it.

I agree with Thrarne on the crater. Draw some lines radiating in a circle from the center of your crater. The lines don't need to be symmetrical or in even length, but they need to be radial. Once drawn, carve these lines out to make the edges of the crater and some scoring beyond the crater.

That will make more of an impact on your terrain. ;)

(sorry---I was typing and it just came out)

Anyway, really nice work. Looks great so far.

wow thanks for the link forseti, thanks for your help, more ideas always welcome! until then, progress with the crater:

I drew the lines, from there i will carve some of that foam out. Again, more ideas more than welcome <_<

Sweet. Been trying to build a fenrisianh table for almost a year myself, but shcool's been killing my time effectively since like.. january ;_;

Looks good anyway, I like it. Dunno what to think of the road though.. fenris is more viking-time, less current-time of a planet to have a road I think.. but I guess it works ;)

looks good, but I've always envisioned it much like the Fjords and craggy terrain resembling Scandanavia. Jagged rock outcroppings rather than the smooth rounded stones you have chosen. Active volcanoes in the Ragnar series of paperbacks were mentioned frequently, especially in the first book and slightly less in the second.

Your board, your vision. Just sayin'.

Yeah this is still very wip. As said, it was originally going to be a cityscape , hence the road :) . Anyway, scandanavia... sounds good i'll google image. and about the viking theme, yeah i just finished the ragnar books. seeing how the citizens are still prehistoric compared to the imperium, i was thinking of getting the fantasy chapel and/or watchtower

Perhaps a damaged Longhouse or village requiring the Wolves of Russ to descend upon those who would be brazen enough to attack the denizens of the Homeworld. Smooth rocks can be used to make low walls and such, but for the higher ground something like the steep peaks of Scandanavia or the Scottish Highlands is what I've always used as the picture in my head while reading.

Since you already have a road, it wouldn't be too hard to modify it to be a stream if you chose:

Scandanavian

Or if you keep the road, maybe make it other than paved:

The mountains were described as craggy with rocky outcroppings. Since you don't really have (nor would anyone want) the real eastate to build a section of Fenris inclusive of those mountains, a smaller scale "portion" would obviously be more practical. The mossy ground with the rocky outcroppins pictured are scalable for your board.

When I finally get to it, one of the terrainpieces of my fenrisian board (a part from the recked ship and shore I've already shown y'al a WIP ofl) will be !one entrance to the fang", a huge rock piece built out of foamboard with a huge gate in it, like a dwarf stronghold.

Maybe something like that could fit your table too? :o

yeah i was thinkin about that... Do you have a link to your wip? I'm very interested in seeing it. In the meantime i'll look for it. Cheers!

more ideas always welcome! :)

EDIT: @lando, found your wip like 25 pages back, its amazing!!! wish i had that kinda skill. And to the rest of you, thanks for the help so far, but more ideas please :D

and i do have a treat for you i'll put up soon, promise.

And here's my little treat to you guys! It's a statue of a running wolf. anyway, maybe cheesy but i love him so here he is:

Statue:

Wolf:

Scale shot with a blood claw and my rock spire:

Not done, the actual statue will be painted to look like marble, the wolf will probably be gold with a black wash. plus i need to fill in those cracks with some green stuff. however, i do need suggestions on where to put this or how to go about basing it, as it seems like a potential centerpiece to the table, and any objective based games. Cheers!

p.s. more ideas! :)

Thanks :) Unfortunately, the thread and the project's been dead for about 6 months, since school and work 's been taking all my time :/

But Ill get ack to it soon I hope, and they I'll revive the hread I think. So look forward to that if you need some more fenris advice in the future :)

Oh, btw, I did a Space Wolf Diorama, supposed to be on Fenris, a while back. On it I used ome stones and suche to create a rocky, northern feel. It's just 20x30 cm.. but maybe it'll give you a nice idea or two :)

Here's the link for it:

It's not much, but I guess it's something.

I've seen that too. great job on that btw. that inspired me to make a diorama sometime, but i figured i would spend my time on my army. Only so much money... :D . Anyway yeah, i was thinkin about my table last night, I'm gonna build some more stuff. I figured i would put some random rocks throughout the table, the statue's base will be covered with snow, but that will be a movable objective marker. I also plan on having a section where the snow is melted away, showing some cracks in the ground where you can see magma flowing. The road will be more twisty turny than straight like it is now, and will look more like cobble stone, and in the middle of the table, will be a little square where a wolf symbol will be carved into it. the snow on the side of the road will be slightly higher than the road, almost as if it's been plowed to the side, but the road will have light layers of snow on it as if it has just snowed. I do have evergreen looking trees, but still figuring out where to put them. Also, i will build 2 or 3 more rock spires. Cheers! and if you have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated :Elite:
