So, yesterday I made the 2 hour drive from South Jersey to Pa, to play in the Showcase / Big Gunz Tournament, and had a great time.

All of the area Gamers were there, from quite a few of the Clubs; The Warmongers, The Big Gunz, the HQ to name just a few as well as a few of the normal GT crowd and of course I got to hang out with some of our fellow B&Cers for a bit, Keith G. and Sword Brother Joe especially.

I want to say over 30 Players in all, and some really great looking armies to boot! I am happy to say I did not see a single piece of bare metal or plastic on a table!

I had a few discussions with some people before the tournament, many were suprised to see that I left the pods at home, but found the change to be a relief, another GT regular laughed and asked when I was going to stop bringing such "soft" lists to tournaments... :P

Interesting thing about this Tournament, is the 1st Round is a "Challenge round" where if 2 players challenge each other then they can play each other in the first game. I really like this idea, our very own Sword Brother Jeramakus (Mod Cedo) from the HQ in Northern NJ challenged me in the first round. This is great, because I only get to see Joe a couple times a year, either at a Tournament, or when I make the 3 hour trip North to visit his club, so to be able to meet at a Tournament and be able to know we will get to play was a real treat.

Joe fielded his Black Templars army, he had a Large Squad on Foot led by a Chappy, One Squad on Foot armed like a Tactical squad with Heavy weapon on foot, 2 squads in Rhino transports, 2 Predators, 2 Dreads, and of course the Emp Champ. (That is from memory, so I may have forgotten a unit or three...)

The 1st senario was and Objective based mission with each player having a 8"x12" objective in the center of thier own deployment zone, the secondary was to kill all of the enemy HQ choices, and the Tertiary was to deplete the enemy's entire force to below 50% (so you needed to kill over 925 vp worth using the old system)

Deployment was up to half the board with up to 2 troops and an HQ. The rest come on in Turn 1 or reserves, and you could not deploy within 18" of the enemy. The game was set at 6 turns, with Night fight in effect with the Sun rising on a Reserve roll (this was interesting). After winning the roll-off I decided to let Joe have the first turn (Objective mission with set number of turns, I wanted to hold last turn).

Joe deployed One troop unit in a ruin on his right flank with a huge field of fire. I deployed the 2 Larger GH packs, I deployed these on my Right, attempting to stay way out of Range and in the dark away from Joes Squad. I deployed way Forward in an attempt to push quickly into his Objective.

This almost proved to be my undoing, and at first I thought it a huge mistake, as he brought on Both Preds, and Both Rhino Squads lurched forward a full 12" and unloading out of thier rhino transports! My most Forward Grey Hunter pack now faced 20 angry Zealots in power armor...

After 34 bolter shots and 2 meltaguns, all that remained of my GH pack was the Terminator, and a Fist wielding GH. In my turn the remaining 2 members of the pack back up, in an effort to gain support from my other GH pack, I bring on my entire army. Yes he hit me hard, but now I know where he is, his Dreads he deployed all the way on the other side of the board and would be slow to support as would the Foot slogging force. He was committed with his 2 Transport units, I would concentrate my attack there.

This worked, manuevering my Bikes, I was able to take care of those 2 units and swing back in time to support my Lord, 3rd GH pack and BC unit against his Large unit who were attempting to over run my Deployment zone. With the way clear my other 2 GH packs made thier way into his deployment zone to take the objective. (Oh, of course the Scouts played thier part was well, popping a Pred and drawing the attention of a Squad, while my Pred provided heavy fire support)

At the end of the Game, I held his Objective, had killed both his HQ choices, and had reduced his force to, well, uhm, not much left...

A 20 point win for the Wolves, and 0 points for the Black Templars. (The game was actually more Touch and go than my report reveals here, for the first couple of turns things were really hairy.

I'll post a quick overview of games 2 and 3 a little later

I just read his post on the Showcase tourney....and noticed that he was too modest to announce it....but....

He won!

Yay wolves!

He came home with the sword ( you gotta convert up a SW with a katana now!).

Congrats! It was great seeing you again! The Mead and Ale are on me!

Here here!

:whoops: I was gettin' to it Keith, I was goin' to finish my report and announce it at the end.

Us Wolves aren't too modest, we love to brag about our great deeds over an ale or six!

Though since Keith did mention it,

I did win, and got lots of good loot! In fact I went undefeated all day (so much for my list being "soft" as some were saying"

I will post a brief overview of the other 2 battles, and some after thoughts in a bit (I have a BBQ to attend)

Oh and Keith, you got to get to the Mechanicon as we need to do battle!

Victories are all the sweeter when you get them after comments like this aren't they? Well done! I look forward to hearing the rest of the saga...

Well game 2 was against yet another Black Templar Army, this one was designed quite differently from the first army I played against though.

He was fielding 2 Crusader squads in Land Raider Crusaders with Chappys, 2 Squads in Rhino transports, and 2 Dreads, and of course the Emp. champion. In my eyes this was truly a scary list.

The Mission was a variation of the Kill Points mission using Victory points to determine the number of Points you earn.

We had a standard 12" deployment, and again I won the roll to choose first or second turn, I chose to go first. I deployed my army in a refused flank set up, tucked in a tight formation on my right side of the table. I told my opponent that I was deployed. He says "really? I thought you were just putting your models there out of the way, so you could deploy. Hmm... I wasn't expecting that."

This was just the response I wanted, he set up with the majority of his army poised to strike my position.

I took the first turn, and shot all of my Bikes 24" to my left, and the Rhino followed (well as fast as it could anyways), this took my opponent by suprise and he attempted to respond in his turn to the percieved threat on his right flank. He did this my moving a large chunk of his army to his right. Preparing to respond to my assault on that side.

In my turn I again turbo-boosted to my right positioning myself for a strike on his weak flank, this caused a traffic jam of sorts on his strong flank, allowing me to attack him while he had to try and reposition, to support my attacking point.

At the end of the day, the battle was well fought on both sides. My Predator, which after the first game I was seriously doubting the wisdom of taking, had racked up quite the kill tally this game, taking out a Rhino, a Landraider, and a Dreadnought!

Final Score 16 Wolves-14 Black Templars, another win for the Wolves! (even if just barely)

I Kinda liked it.

I have to say though, that when I construct lists, the amount of kill points in my list is never anything I take into consideration, I just attempt to alter my play a bit in those missions.

Personally I feel that the kp system while not bad, over symplifies things quite a bit.

Anyways, my 3rd game was against a nice young man with a scary looking Tau army. He had 2 HQ suit guys with bodyguards, 3 Hammerheads, 3 squads mounted in Devil Fish, and 3 Piranah running as 3 seperate squads.

The senario was objective based, with 3 markers, 1 was board center, 1 was 8 inches to the left of the marker along the center line, and the 3rd was to the right along the center line, the left and right markers then scattered 1d6 inches.

Deployment was board corners

The board was a city fight type, with about 5 buildings, which were placed ALL AROUND THE PERIMETER of the board!!!!

No terrain anywhere in the middle or anywhere near the objectives.

my opponent won the roll for first turn and took the board corner which would leave me with very little cover.

He set up an impressive looking gun-line and in my set up I used my one real piece of available cover to hide all my bikers, I then set up my army as close to the center of the board as I could and spaced out. I felt like I was in "Tin Can Alley"

In his First turn he systematically began to destroy my Army, Popping my Rhino early and destroying my Pred before it even fired a shot.

In my turn I advanced all of my Infantry squads towards the objectives, figuring I would take them all and hope I had enough "umph" to keep them, and if any thing got close enough the wolves would destroy it.

This wasn't the whole of my plan though, my bikes moved fast, running the perimeter and using those buildings to block line of site. If I could get my scouts on in a reasonable time frame, I figured I would have a chance.

In his turns he continued to fire on my infantry, concentrating fire as best he could on one Pack at a time, frustration set in when he had to waste an incredible amount of fire power on my Wolf Lord and his BloodClaws.

My Scouts came on, shot up a Devil Fish, and assaulted the squad inside, and even managed to get the Hammerhead in on he same assault. My bikes assaulted at the same time, locking up his HQs and all of his Plasma type capability, which denied much of his high str. high ap weapons.

I got a bit lucky through the game as he immobilized a few of his own vehicles in his efforts to stay back out of range of my guns, while trying to maintain fire power on my Wolves.

Time was called, and as we were playing on Table 1, they allowed us to play out another turn (we were in the 4th turn and we played the 5th out)

Again, I must admitt that the Spirit of Russ, was protecting my Wolves as I made an incredible amount of Armor saves. And when I did finally roll a One for a TDA Wolfguard, he was saved by his Runic Charm.

In my last turn, I assaulted the 6 gun drones (from the piranah) which had flown over to contest the objectives, I destroyed them all and used my Last remaining GH pack (which was at full strength) to take All THREE objectives!

a 20 point win for the Wolves! and that was the final deciding factor for me winning this tournament.

I have to admit, as a mech player for competitive purposes, that tau armies like that on an open table fill me with dread. Transports popping early and central objectives mean you really had to run the gauntlet by the look of it, but to pull out a win is great work. I think this may have been one of those times when the OBEL scouts really paid for themselves... they really do provide a problem for these gunline type forces.

Once again, congrats. You got the best of three very different armies, and what more can you really ever do?
